Fringe Review: Emil Amok: 69 offers rapid fire observations
Emil Amok: 69 2.5 stars out of 5 Stage 5, Acacia Hall 10433, 83 Ave. Early in his breathless one-man show, storyteller Emil Amok Guillermo reveals that he is inspired by Spalding Grey — the late American writer and performance artist known for a series of autobiographical monologues on stage and in film, including Swimming to Cambodia and Monster in a Box. This was helpful. At least the audience (those familiar with Grey's work) would know what we were getting into — something that initially felt like stand-up with a dash of news anchor and then morphed into a look at Guillermo's Filipino-American heritage and American colonialism, with a dollop of transgender musing and bit of Buddhism tossed in to tidy things up at the end. It was a lot. While the artist tried to pull it together using the term '69' to indicate a topsy-turvy world, and the work 'amok' to signal a kind of wild raging — the result was an exhausting look at what Guillermo called Trump Derangement Syndrome. (An aside: three of the first shows I saw at Fringe this year were Trump-focussed, as if we don't get enough of that with our breakfast cereal.) That's not to say there were not moments of connection with the audience; Guillermo's monologue offered meaningful insights into the Filipino-American experience, and his rapid-fire delivery was sincere, professional and polished, if lacking a consistent through-line.
