Sea and air travel take centre stage at ATM 2025 as passenger numbers surge

Web Release02-05-2025

Sea and air travel have been under the spotlight at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) this week as the event welcomed international leaders from the aviation and cruise industries. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, shared updates on the latest passenger numbers as well as his fascinating perspective on the future of aviation and the airport experience. Meanwhile, a panel of experts gathered to discuss the progress made in establishing the Arabian Gulf as a premier global cruise destination.
Dubai Airports is poised for another record-breaking year following a strong start to 2025, with January alone seeing 8.5 million passengers and projections pointing to 96 million by the end of the year. During the fireside chat, Griffiths highlighted the continued strength of key markets such as India, Saudi Arabia, the UK and the USA, underscoring Dubai's position as a vital global hub.
Driving this growth is Dubai Airports' commitment to innovation, with a focus on seamless, technology-driven passenger experiences, including facial recognition and AI. Griffiths also offered insights into the customer-first design strategy behind Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), which comprises eight smaller concourses to minimise transit times and maximise comfort for travellers.
Speaking on ATM's Global Stage, Griffiths said: 'In the future, customer preferences are not going to be driven just by price and the product on board an aircraft, but the convenience and quality of the customer experience on the ground at airports. There is no other place for Dubai Airports to aim for than number one.'
According to statistics outlined by Tourism Economics (An Oxford Economics Company) during the cruise industry panel discussion, between 2019 and 2024, global deployment in the industry increased by 25%, with a further 5% expansion achieved in 2025 so far. The Caribbean, Europe and Asia-Pacific lead in terms of cruise deployment, and in the Middle East, the average number of cruise days spent in the region has increased by an impressive 125%.
When asked to outline key source markets for MSC Cruises, Angelo Capurro- Executive Director, MSC Group's Cruise Division said: 'Last year, we welcomed a record 150 different nationalities and saw a particular increase in passengers coming from central Asia, driven by increased connectivity and better access to visas, combined with the appeal of the Middle East as a travel destination.'
The panel highlighted the Middle East's emergence as a global cruise destination, driven by infrastructure investments, regional collaboration and a growing appetite for cultural and immersive travel experiences. The launch of Aroya Cruises, Saudi Arabia's first luxury cruise line, was also a key topic, as well as the role of the Cruise Alliance in fostering regional collaboration and enhancing passenger experiences.
The Global Stage at ATM is home to the highest level of expertise, featuring C-Suite executives, ministerial leaders, and global influencers, featuring a dynamic mix of panel discussions, interviews, and presentations, all curated to inspire, educate and provide actionable takeaways.
Today, on the final day of ATM, the Global Stage hosted a dedicated market insights session on the Asia Pacific Region and spotlighted India's next Gen Traveller amidst the rapid rise of the country's tourism market.
Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director for the Middle East, Arabian Travel Market, said: 'This week at ATM, we've had the privilege of hosting some of the most influential leaders and visionaries in global tourism. Through our conference sessions, we've seen dynamic discussions on the future of travel, hospitality, sustainability, innovation, and new market opportunities, highlighting the pivotal role this event plays in shaping the industry's direction.'

Emirates Partners with Bahamasair to Expand Caribbean Access for UAE Travellers

Emirates has signed a strategic interline agreement with Bahamasair, opening new travel options for passengers flying from the UAE to The Bahamas via the United States. The partnership allows Emirates customers to seamlessly connect from Miami or Orlando to three destinations in The Bahamas—Nassau, Freeport, and San Salvador—through Bahamasair, the country's national carrier. Travellers can now book their entire journey, including flights on both airlines, using a single ticket, while enjoying generous baggage allowances. The move strengthens Emirates' footprint in the Caribbean and aligns with its broader strategy of offering more global connectivity to passengers from the UAE and beyond. The agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed at the Arabian Travel Market between Emirates and The Bahamas' Ministry of Foreign Affairs to jointly promote tourism to the island nation. Adnan Kazim, Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, said the deal enhances travel convenience and expands the airline's network to new leisure destinations. 'This partnership offers customers competitive fares, simple booking, and better connectivity to The Bahamas,' he said. Bahamasair's Managing Director, Tracy Cooper, welcomed the collaboration, highlighting the access to new markets and international expertise it brings. 'This significantly elevates Bahamasair's global profile and strengthens our growth potential,' she noted. Emirates currently serves Miami with daily flights and Orlando with five-weekly services, connecting passengers from the UAE to over 140 destinations worldwide. The agreement also paves the way for future cooperation in cargo services and frequent flyer programmes. The deal is expected to boost tourism and trade between the UAE and the Caribbean, offering a convenient new route for Emirati travellers seeking tropical escapes. News Source: Emirates News Agency

Watch: After 60 years in UAE, Indian educator gets first Dubai entry stamp

Indian expat Haji N Jamaluddin arrived in Dubai from Mumbai by ship on February 26, 1965. Sixty years after his original arrival, the veteran educator and founder of Crescent English High School was officially welcomed into Dubai. He received a special immigration stamp from Dubai Airports to commemorate 60 years since his arrival in the UAE, making up for the one he never received when he first set foot in the city. With no port and the city just taking shape in the 1960s, Haji N Jamaluddin never got a stamp on his passport, which usually documents entry and exit dates in the country. Six decades later, his son wanted to mark the occasion by giving his father a new Dubai entry stamp. In a heartwarming gesture that reflects the spirit of the UAE's Year of Community, Dubai Airports helped make the son's simple wish for his father come true. "This new entry stamp isn't just a mark in a passport, it's a tribute to everything Dubai has given us," said Jamaluddin. "My son wanted to honour the years I have spent here, and with the help of the Dubai Airports team, he made that possible." Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. In a social media post, Dubai Airport celebrated his legacy and wrote: "He arrived in Dubai by sea in 1965, before there was even a port There was no immigration stamp back then. As part of the 'Year of Community,' we felt privileged to finally put a stamp in his passport to celebrate a legacy shaped by service, humility, and hope. Now 90, Haji Jamaluddin still believes 'education is the best weapon for enlightenment.' A respected educator, chairman and founder of Crescent English High School, Jamaluddin has influenced the lives of thousands of students since opening the school in 1984. With more than 1,700 students enrolled today, it remains one of the most affordable private schools in the UAE. Located in Al Qusais, the yearly fees at the school begin at Dh3409 annually. His philosophy is simple: 'Money is not everything. Education is the best weapon for enlightenment.' Jamaluddin credits much of his passion to the leadership of the UAE, especially the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, whom he saw regularly visiting worksites in the early morning hours. 'He was always among the people and now Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is continuing that legacy. It's what makes Dubai what it is today.'

Dubai Airports Slashes Parking Fees Ahead of Summer Travel Surge

As Dubai International Airport gears up for one of its busiest travel seasons, Dubai Airports has rolled out reduced parking rates and a set of travel tips to help passengers enjoy a smoother, more efficient journey. From June 10 to 30, guests using long-term parking at all DXB terminals will benefit from significantly lowered fees—just in time for the peak summer holiday period. With over 250,000 passengers expected daily, the airport is offering these measures to ease congestion and enhance the overall travel experience. The special offer applies across Terminal 1 Car Park B, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3, with rates now set at AED 100 for three days, AED 200 for seven days, and AED 300 for 14 days. Travellers can also make use of DXB Express Maps, a real-time digital wayfinding tool accessible by scanning a QR code on any flight information screen. The service helps guests locate gates, amenities, restaurants, and retail outlets within the airport, simplifying navigation through the bustling terminals. To ensure a hassle-free experience, Dubai Airports has also issued ten travel tips for passengers: Check-in with ease: Emirates passengers are encouraged to use home check-in, early check-in, self-service kiosks, or city check-in options for faster processing. Arrive on time: Passengers flying with other airlines should not arrive more than three hours before departure. Online check-in is recommended where possible. Speed through immigration: Children aged 12 and above can use Smart Gates to pass through immigration more quickly. Be prepared: Weigh luggage at home, gather documents in advance, and be ready for security checks to avoid last-minute stress. Pack smart: Batteries and power banks are not allowed in checked baggage. These must be packed in hand luggage due to safety regulations. Use public transport: The Dubai Metro connects directly to Terminals 1 and 3, offering a convenient and reliable option, especially during peak hours or holidays. Plan for pickups: Visitors collecting guests are encouraged to use designated parking or valet services, which are also included in the temporary parking discount. Beat the traffic: Allow extra time when heading to the airport, as roads to DXB can get congested during peak travel periods. Support for People of Determination: DXB provides enhanced accessibility features, including marked routes, trained staff, and a dedicated lounge in Terminal 2. Enjoy the amenities: Once inside, travellers can relax with access to DXB's extensive shopping, dining, lounge, and hospitality options. Dubai Airports' latest initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to improve passenger comfort and convenience as the city welcomes a surge of summer travellers. News Source: Dubai Airports
