Fahmi urges JKom and JaPen to boost public awareness on Malaysia's pivotal role as Asean Chair, especially in rural areas
KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — The Community Communications Department (JKom) and the Information Department (JaPen) have been asked to intensify efforts to enhance public awareness and understanding about Malaysia's role as Asean Chair in 2025, especially in rural communities.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said continuous outreach is essential to help Malaysians understand the benefits of assuming the Asean Chairmanship, particularly in terms of economic spillovers.
'I call on JKom and JaPen to help more Malaysians grasp what it means to be the host (of Asean). For those in villages or towns with hotels, for instance, I'm sure they'll see the influx of international delegates, which is part of the economic benefits.'
Fahmi said this at the ministry's 2024 Excellent Service Awards Ceremony (Peninsular Zone) at the Seri Angkasa Auditorium, Angkasapuri Media City, here today, which was also attended by Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa.
JKom director-general Datuk Ismail Yusop and JaPen director-general Julina Johan, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, were in attendance.
A total of 691 staff of the Communications Ministry and its agencies, including 63 from Bernama, received the awards during the event.
Expanding on the matter, Fahmi said that beyond the upcoming Asean Summit on May 26-27, Malaysia will also host the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the Asean-GCC-China Economic Summit, both are key platforms for addressing regional and global challenges.
'This matters for Malaysians, especially in light of recent developments like the United States' announcement of its tariff rates on various countries, including Malaysia and our Asean partners. It's a clear signal that we need to act proactively to support Asean member states,' he said.
Fahmi also noted Malaysia's leadership on digital governance issues, pointing out the country's unique success in officially licensing the Telegram app.
'Some countries were surprised by how we managed to engage with Telegram's founders. When it comes to big tech, many believe they're bigger than nations. But our stance is simple; you can be big tech, but our laws are bigger,' he added. — Bernama

Selangor Sultan extends Aidiladha greetings, calls for stricter measures against rising haj scams
SHAH ALAM, June 7 — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has expressed sadness and disappointment over the rise in fraudulent haj travel packages affecting Muslims in the country. His Royal Highness said it was especially disheartening that those exploiting the situation were Muslims themselves, who were willing to deceive their fellow believers for personal gain. In this regard, His Royal Highness decreed that stern action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that take advantage of and deceive Muslims. Sultan Sharafuddin said this in a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, in which His Royal Highness and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Muslims across Malaysia. Sultan Sharafuddin also called on Muslims to uphold the sanctity of the haj by ensuring that all arrangements are made through licensed and recognised agents and companies authorised by the authorities to manage haj and umrah affairs. At the same time, Their Royal Highnesses prayed that Malaysian pilgrims would be granted a mabrur haj and return home safely. Malaysia, Brunei deepen ties with joint disaster response and cross-border security initiatives, says DPM Zahid
KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — Malaysia and Brunei continue to strengthen their commitment to expanding regional cooperation in disaster preparedness and cross-border security, in addition to enhancing the longstanding bilateral relations between the two countries, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. In a Facebook post today, Ahmad Zahid said the commitment was expressed during a bilateral meeting with Brunei's Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Setia Awang Ahmaddin Abdul Rahman, on the sidelines of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2025 in Geneva. He expressed appreciation for Brunei's readiness to continue joint training between the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) and Brunei's National Disaster Management Centre, including knowledge transfer programmes and training based on best practices. 'We also agreed to intensify joint exercises and field training, including rescue operations and emergency simulations, which were recently conducted. 'These trainings not only foster trust between agencies but are also essential in coordinating operating procedures in the event of cross-border disasters,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said Malaysia and Brunei had proven that close neighbourly ties, combined with strong commitment, could build more robust regional cooperation in disaster and security matters.
