Unlike dogs, most cats don't taste sweetness because they lack the functional taste receptors for sweet flavors. Specifically, domestic cats—and most members of the feline family—have a genetic mutation in the gene (Tas1r2) that codes for part of the sweet taste receptor, rendering it inactive. As a result, sugary foods hold no appeal to them, which explains why cats rarely show interest in desserts or fruits.
This trait likely evolved because cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their natural diet consists almost entirely of meat, which doesn't require the ability to detect sugars. In contrast, dogs are omnivores and have retained their sweet tooth, often enjoying fruits and sweet treats. This difference in taste perception reflects the unique dietary evolution and nutritional needs of each species.
Stay healthy and keep those furry friends happy!

Curro learner shines on international stage

A CURRO Hillcrest Grade 11 learner recently raised South Africa's flag high in a modelling event in Turkey. Jade Paton returned with a crown after being named as the Africa Continent winner. The 16-year-old, who has been modelling for about two years, also won the Best Eveningwear Award. 'I was chosen by the national director of South Africa from a panel of dozens of other applicants to participate in this competition. Future Fashion Faces World is a modelling competition where people from all over the world participate.' Also read: Aaron 'putz' his best foot forward What made the competition more special for the Hillcrest resident was meeting people and making friends from different cultures, countries and backgrounds. 'I love modelling and being in front of a camera, I'm extremely patient about it. I would say the reason I love it so much is that I can express myself through photos and inspire others.' Throughout her modelling career, Jade said she has stayed true to herself. 'I never tried to change or cover up scars or bruises but embrace them as they make me who I am. I want girls all over to know they don't need to change for anyone or get themselves to fit in but rather stay true to themselves and do what they love no matter what others say.' Braai on a budget: Making your weekend plans go further

Many South Africans are finding it harder to stretch their budgets, and you can notice it when you're buying groceries, even for a braai. Whether you're grilling in your backyard or hosting friends indoors, every cent counts when stocking up on your favourite braai essentials. To help you stretch your rand further, The South African compared the prices of key braai items at Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, and Woolworths, so you can enjoy the braai without burning your wallet. Which supermarket offers the best value? When it comes to braai supplies, Shoprite stands out as the most wallet-friendly choice. Woolworths, unsurprisingly, tops the price range, while Pick n Pay and Checkers offer competitive pricing on a few key items. How much are the braai essentials? 'What happened to her face?': Amor Vittone questioned over new look

Singer and actress Amor Vittone is accused of overusing filters – or possibly going under the knife – after she posted a picture of her seemingly youthful face on her Facebook account. The 53-year-old entertainer is the widow of the late Springbok Joost van der Westhuizen. They share two children. In a recent Facebook post, Amor Vittone posted a picture of herself with a motivational message. In the picture, the mother of two appeared noticeably younger, with immaculate make-up, smooth, clear skin, and a wrinkle-free face. Under the post in the comments section, Amor's followers questioned her polished appearance… Christa Binedell: 'This does not look like her?' Dawn Goosen: 'What has she done to her face?' Kearns Lawrence: 'It's not you!' Annalien Matthysen: 'Is this AI?' Loving the winter sun! … Posted by Amor Vittone on Tuesday 3 June 2025 While Amor Vittone has dated a plastic surgeon, she has been adamant that she hasn't had any. Late last year, the mother of two shut down speculation about her appearance. In the comments section of one of her posts, she posted: 'Kan julle net relax! Nie Botox of fillers nie. [Can you relax! No botox or filler]. Instead, she credited her picture-perfect snaps to 'good make-up and lighting with slight filter' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 .
