The event gathers more than 400 young chess talents from 21 countries, including ASEAN members and dialogue partners such as the United States, China, Russia, India, South Korea, and Japan.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, delivered by Penang Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, Anwar highlighted Malaysia's pride in hosting the prestigious tournament.
'Chess is not merely a game of strategy; it is a platform for sharpening the intellect, cultivating discipline, and fostering healthy competition,' he said.
Anwar expressed confidence that the championship would enhance regional sportsmanship while reinforcing diplomatic relations and mutual understanding among participating nations.
He encouraged all players to embrace the opportunity to gain valuable experience, showcase their skills, and bring honor to their countries.
The tournament, running from July 1 to 11, is expected to leave a lasting positive impact on chess development across the region.

The Brunei contingent will compete in two events: athletics and bowling. Amiruddin Mohd Zain is set to compete in the 800m and 1500m athletics events, while three athletes – Khairul Anwar Jofari, Mohammad Nazri Mahat, and Md. Hariz Hassan – will participate in the bowling events, including individual, doubles and trio competitions. Boosting the morale of the contingent, a national flag handover ceremony took place at Brunei International Airport on Monday night (Aug 18) before their departure to Indonesia. Present to hand over the flag was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Seri Setia Nazmi Mohamad. The Chef de Mission of Brunei's contingent, Norahalim Abd Rahman, received the flag from the Minister. In his words of encouragement, the Minister reminded the athletes to maintain discipline and avoid prohibited substances or drugs, warning that any violations could result in suspension from competition and damage to the country's reputation. He added, 'We will also pray for your success in the 2nd Asean Deaf Games. In sport, winning and losing are part of the game, so it is important to always do your best.' Meanwhile, Norahalim expressed his gratitude in an interview, saying, 'Alhamdulillah. We would like to thank the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for their unwavering support in allowing us to participate in the 2nd Asean Deaf Games. 'Insya Allah, we hope to achieve medals in this year's competition.' He added that the bowling team has been training rigorously and participating in local tournaments in preparation for the Games. Also present at the airport were the Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Mohd Hasnan Ali Hassan, who is carrying out the duties of Permanent Secretary (Sports), along with members of the National Athletes Selection and Assessment Committee and other ministry officials. Myanmar has been unbeaten in the tournament and started with a smashing display when they upset the much-favoured Australia 2-1. They defeated Timor-Leste next 3-0 and, on Wednesday (August 13), Myanmar held the Philippines to a 1-1 draw to top Group B and send the defending champions out of the tournament. Australia, despite the surprise defeat to Myanmar, also progressed to the semi-finals after a big 9-0 win against Timor-Leste in the other match on Wednesday. For the record, the 2025 Asean Women's Championship (also called the Asean MSIG Serenity Cup 2025) is the 13th edition of the premier Asean women's football tournament in the region. It was also previously known as the AFF Women's Championship. The international women's football tournament is organised by the Asean Football Federation (AFF). As for the action in the field, it seems Myanmar is basking in the spotlight for now. In the match against defending champion Philippines, Myanmar captain Win Theingi Tun converted her tournament-leading fifth goal with a first-half penalty at L ạch Tray Stadium . A lthough Nina Mathelus levelled for the Philippines with 19 minutes left, it was not enough to prevent Myanmar from setting up a semi-final meeting against Thailand on Saturday. The Myanmar captain picked herself off the floor and sent the Philippines goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to notch her fifth goal of the tournament. The Philippines struggled to create opportunities, but they got back on level terms in the 71st minute when Adelaide Wyrzynski's cross from the right of the Myanmar box found an unmarked Nina Mathelus, who stabbed the ball past Myo Mya Mya Nyein. Thai golfers dominate Maybank Championship qualifiers
KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand displayed the immense strength in depth they possess in women's golf after sweeping all five qualifying slots at the Maybank Championship Asean qualifiers today. Kritchanya Kaopattanaskul topped the standings after carding a two-day seven-under 137 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in Bukit Kiara. Achiraya Sriwong (five-under 139) and Namo Luangnitikul (even-par 144) rounded out a top three comprised of amateur players. Cholcheva Wongras (two-over 146) and Kan Bunnabodee were joint-fourth, claiming the remaining two qualifying slots. It was, however, not to be for Malaysian duo Ng Jing Xuen and Genevieve Ling who finished just one stroke behind. The duo shared sixth spot on three-over 147. The soft-spoken Kritchanya, who is only 17, was all smiles after booking her slot in the Maybank Championship tournament proper on Oct 30-Nov 2. "Of course I am really happy to secure my place in the Maybank Championship in October," said Kritchanya. "This is the first time I have competed outside of Thailand so it is very special for me. "I had a lot of fun here as I was also able to sink a hole-in-one yesterday (hole four)." Jing Xuen, also 17, took the result in her stride. "Yesterday (Aug 12) was a bit more hectic but I am pleased to be able to come back today," said Jing Xuen, who claimed gold at the 2023 Phnom Penh Sea Games. "I'd say my putting was really good today, it was just that my risk management was a little bit off. "In the end I was just one shot off (qualifying) but I guess that is just golf for you. I accept it and will keep working harder." Only the top-five finishers booked their spots in the US$3 million (RM12.7 million) showpiece, which returns for its third edition as the richest LPGA Tour stop in Asia. Earning a place in the elite 78-player field guarantees a minimum payout of approximately US$5,400 (RM22,720) as the tournament is a no-cut event.
