Drivers urged to put tea bags in car to prevent huge problem as winter ends
As we approach the end of winter, motorists are being advised to pop a tea bag or two into their vehicles, utilising this common kitchen item for an important purpose.
Placing tea bags inside the car can absorb moisture, thus cutting down on condensation that forms on windows and windscreens.
Acting as a homemade dehumidifier, these tea bags help prevent steam from building up, allowing drivers to hit the road quicker without having to wait for the glass to demist — a frequent issue during chilly mornings which often persists into March's latter part.
Ben Pitcher, a motoring expert at DPF Experts, once shared this nifty tip, encouraging drivers to take precautionary measures when driving.

He explained: "Tea bags, especially black or green tea, are natural moisture absorbers. Placing them in your car can help reduce condensation, especially in colder months."
Despite not being as effective as commercial dehumidifiers, he notes they're an affordable, green alternative for minor dampness issues. Underlining the importance of visibility, the Highway Code mandates that "windscreens and windows MUST be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision".
The Code also necessitates that all key elements like lights, brakes, steering, and safety systems such as seat belts and demisters remain in working order.
Ignoring such regulations can result in serious safety hazards, potentially leading to harsh fines up to £2,500 or penalty points on a motorist's licence.
Ben highlighted that tea bags aren't the only remedy for dampness in cars, as silica gel packets offer a great alternative. He mentioned: "Silica gel packets, commonly found in packaging, are excellent at absorbing moisture."
He suggested: "Collecting a few and placing them around your car can help control condensation. While they won't clear foggy windows instantly, they can help reduce moisture and keep your windscreen clearer for longer."
Experts from Leasing Options have shared additional domestic tips to prevent vehicle condensation, such as using cat litter in tights, applying washing up liquid on car windows, and using shaving foam.
They also recommended filling Tupperware containers with coarse salt as an effective method. The experts noted that salt is highly effective at absorbing water from its surroundings, making it an ideal solution.

Athens community members and nonprofit raise over $21K in tornado relief funds
ATHENS, Ala (WHNT) — No one wants to hear that their business or city has been hit by a tornado, yet that was the reality on December 28, 2024, in Athens. 'I received a phone call about 11:30 on December 28th that said 'You probably need to get downtown… we've been hit by a tornado,'' said Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks. From Mess to Ministry: Huntsville barber gives haircuts and a little hope in hard times The EF1 left its mark all across downtown, but it hit the CEI bookstore especially hard. It's a Christian bookstore and supply center. 'Once the roof was ripped off of the building, we kind of knew as soon as we went in that man, nothing much in here is going to survive as far as being able to sell it to customers,' said Lance Taylor. Taylor is the bookstore's director of operations. He and his team have spent the last five months working hard to get back on their feet. They've even reopened the store in a different location down the road from their original one. While they've worked to turn a new page, the community has rallied around them as well. 'We were really overwhelmed to see the support from so many people, individuals and business owners to say, 'Hey, we don't want you to go anywhere….what can we do to help,'' he Marks said many people wanted to help when they found out the damage in Athens did not meet the threshold to get state funding. That's when a nonprofit stepped in. 'Athens Main Street and others said, 'We need to help our local business people…..they are the heartbeat of all of our communities,'' said Marks. They created a 'business storm relief fund,' raising just over $21,000 and providing it to the four businesses hit the hardest. 'One of the first things I told her is I hope there's other people that are eligible for this, too,' said Taylor. 'Because, you know, our building's roof caused a lot of other damage when it came off … You know it landed on a lot of other businesses here in downtown and even the courthouse.' While the past few months have been far from ideal, Taylor said they're finding the good in this situation, too. 'There was a lot of things to kind of be sad about and cry about or whatever in the loss, but there's also bright spots and the silver lining,' said Taylor. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Trackhouse Racing looks to bridge gap with big race teams. It took a big step with Coca-Cola 600 win
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Trackhouse Racing has won nine Cup Series races since opening in 2021. None as big as Sunday night's race. Ross Chastain became the first driver since Bobby Allison 56 years ago to win a race from an official starting position of last when he passed William Byron with six laps remaining to capture the Coca-Cola 600, giving team owner Justin Marks his first crown jewel win. In a time when the Cup racing seems largely dominated by Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske, the little guys got a much-needed breakthrough win. 'It's sinking in that we won the Coke 600," Chastain said. 'What that means for the team and me, I don't know yet. I'm excited to find out, though." For Chastain, it means returning to the NASCAR playoffs after missing out last year. Meanwhile, Marks is hoping it is a sign of bigger things to come. Trackhouse Racing has three full-time drivers now in the Cup Series — Chastain, Daniel Suárez and newcomer Shane van Gisbergen. The team also is trying out a fourth in developmental driver Connor Zilisch, who got a start at the Coca-Cola 600. Marks said he spends most of his waking moments trying to figure out how to close the gap between his team and the Hendricks, Gibbs and Penskes of the racing world. And Sunday night was a big step. 'Now, if we want to be intellectually lazy, we can just say, 'Well, they have more money and they have more people.' I think that that's certainly important. They have a lot of resources, and that's very important," Marks said. "If you look back in 2022, we had 20 (different) winners. Then those teams that have all those resources, they're learning and their development curve is quick because they've got the resources to put behind it.' Marks believes NASCAR's new NextGen cars — which promote more parity across the series — help bridge the gap for smaller racing teams. 'I would not have started Trackhouse and raced in the Cup Series if they didn't go to this race car because that provides an opportunity to close the gap,' Marks said. Marks said the first thing he's learned about NASCAR is that it's a people business, and that hiring motivated, team-oriented workers means everything. 'We're looking at things like developing a more robust aero department, looking at the way we structure our engineering, looking at those things to make sure we get back on the development curve with those three,' Marks said. "It just takes very thoughtful examination, and it's a process that probably will never stop because Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing and Penske Racing are just very, very strong, talented organizations.' But at least for one night, that examination was put on hold. It was time to celebrate. There was plenty of hooting and hollering from the Chastain faithful more than two hours after his win at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the driver spent time soaking it all in. He had a beer or two before leaving the track, but only after honoring Alan Kulwicki with a Polish victory lap and tossing a watermelon from his race car onto the track and joining fans in the crowd. Marks said everything about Chastain and his can-do attitude is perfect for his organization. 'We started last, but Ross' confidence was really high," Marks said. "After we wrecked in practice, Ross left the care center, came back over and had a smile on his face. He was pumped because he knew we'd unloaded with speed. Ross is one of the best drivers in the Cup Series. He puts the team on his shoulders as we try to rebuild. ... This is a moment that holds major significance for everyone in the company, and it's such an honor to win at this place.' ___
