Mikel Arteta to Support His Former Club in the Champions League Final

Yahooa day ago

After Arsenal's Champions League semifinal exit at the hands of PSG, manager Mikel Arteta made it clear who he'll be supporting in the final.
While many coaches and players prefer to move on after a tough loss, Arteta isn't one of them. Following the second-leg defeat in Paris, the Spanish coach expressed his support for the French side during the post-match press conference.

'I hope with all my heart that PSG can finally do it,' said Arteta.
His backing goes beyond the emotional aftermath of defeat. Arteta has a personal connection to PSG — he played for the club on loan from Barcelona in the early 2000s.
His stint in Paris helped lay the foundation for his professional career. After returning to Spain, he moved on to Rangers, then Real Sociedad, before making his name in England with Everton and later Arsenal.
Arteta retired as a player in 2016 and soon became Pep Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City, where he helped the club secure two Premier League titles. In 2019, he took over at Arsenal as head coach.

This season marked Arsenal's first appearance in a Champions League semifinal since 2009. The last time the Gunners reached the final was in 2006.
Arteta brought Arsenal back to European stage
Arteta is only the third manager to lead Arsenal in Europe since the club's golden era under Arsène Wenger, who managed from 1996 to 2018. Wenger won three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups, and seven Community Shields. His successor, Unai Emery, lasted just over a year before Arteta took the reins.
Since taking over, Arteta has won the FA Cup and two Community Shields, but recent results have sparked speculation about his future. Despite leading the Premier League by 10 points at one stage last season, Arsenal ultimately lost the title to Manchester City — raising questions about whether Arteta can deliver major trophies.
But for now, as the Champions League final approaches, Arteta will be watching — not as a coach who was knocked out, but as a former PSG player hoping the club that helped launch his journey can finally lift the trophy they've chased for years, reaching the final for only the second time in the team's history.

'Brave' Bright missed: England's Bronze

England defender Millie Bright withdrew from the camp because she was "mentally and physically" at her limits (Ben STANSALL) Lucy Bronze admitted her England team-mate Millie Bright will be missed ahead of the women's Nations League clash against Spain on Tuesday, after the defender withdrew from national duty because of burnout. Chelsea captain Bright, 31, withdrew from the England camp last week, saying she was "mentally and physically" at her limit. Advertisement Bright was pivotal to England's Euro 2022 triumph and it is not yet known if she will return for her country's trophy defence in Switzerland this summer. "She's missed definitely in the sense of what she brings, both on and off the pitch," her Chelsea and England colleague Bronze told reporters Monday. "She's one of the leaders in the team, not just because she's the oldest, but just because of her experience, her attributes as a person. "We've all spoke to Millie through the week... we just want to make sure that she's OK, both physically and mentally." Advertisement Bronze and Bright won a domestic treble at Chelsea this season and also reached the Champions League semi-finals. "It's been a long season for everyone, having spent every day with Millie, I know that she's obviously someone who's quite tough and maybe holds a lot in, so I think it's been quite brave for her to come out and speak," added Bronze. "I think just from a friend perspective, I just want for her to be okay, and give her as much time as she needs to feel okay again." England's Euros defence begins on July 5 against France, but first they are aiming to reach the Nations League semi-finals. Advertisement They must beat 2023 World Cup winners Spain to finish top of Group A3 and progress to the final four in October. The match will also offer coach Sarina Wiegman the chance to fine-tune her preparations for the Euros. - 'Harm them' - Spain beat England in the World Cup final but Wiegman's team got a measure of revenge with a 1-0 victory against La Roja at Wembley in February. "Of course we all know what they're capable of, they're very tight on the ball, so we have to be aware of that," said England's Dutch coach. "We have to, out of possession, be really tight and play compact and be very aggressive in moments, but I also think we had the ball too (in February)... Advertisement "We put them under pressure, and that's what we want to do tomorrow too. You can't control everything, so I think it's going to go back and forth. "They might be a little bit more on the ball than us, but we're definitely going to be on the ball too. And we're definitely going to find some moments where we hopefully harm them." Wiegman confirmed everybody in the squad was fit, including Arsenal striker Alessia Russo after a calf problem kept her out of England's 6-0 romp against Portugal on Friday. Chelsea striker Aggie Beever-Jones came in for her and netted a hat-trick. Advertisement "It's really good for Alessia that she's back -- we have a decision to make and that's nice," said Wiegman. Hannah Hampton started in goal against Portugal in the wake of Mary Earps' shock retirement last week. Paris Saint-Germain stopper Earps, 32, was in goal as England won Euro 2022 and on the run to the 2023 World Cup final, but had fallen behind Hampton in the pecking order. "I think I was the first person Mary called to tell," said Bronze. "The news was difficult to take as team-mates because we all love Mary, we all want her to be here, but as a person and as a friend we accept her decision. "We celebrate everything she's done for this team both off and on the pitch." rbs/pi

Magnus Carlsen slams table in frustration after shock loss to Gukesh Dommaraju in ‘turnaround of the year'

Magnus Carlsen slammed his fist on the table in frustration after suffering a shock loss to defending classical chess world champion Gukesh Dommaraju at the 2025 Norway Chess tournament on Sunday. Nineteen-year-old Gukesh pounced on a rare mistake from Carlsen at Finansparken in Stavanger, Norway, to seal the 3-0 victory and secure his first classical victory over the five-time world champion. When Carlsen was forced to concede, the 34-year-old slammed his hand on the table in a surprise burst of emotion before shaking Gukesh's hand and leaving the venue quickly, skipping his media duties. The outburst caused a stunned reaction from the commentators with Carlsen usually known for his calm demeanor. Carlsen admitted afterwards that he was left confused by his Indian opponent's tactics. 'I don't completely understand what (Gukesh's) concept is here. It seems to me that I just have excellent play,' Carlsen said afterwards. For Gukesh, who became the youngest-ever world chess champion last year, it was a momentous victory and one which he didn't think would come. '99 out of 100 times, I would lose. Just a lucky day!' Gukesh said afterwards. 'First classical win against Magnus, I mean, not the way I wanted it to be, but OK, I'll take it.' British grandmaster David Howell called Gukesh's victory the 'turnaround of the year' given the nature of the comeback. He also praised the end of the game too. 'Focus. Brilliance. Raw passion, anger, Sportsmanship. This moment had it all,' Howell wrote on X. Carlsen still remains atop the Norway Chess standings despite the loss with four rounds of games left to play, with Gukesh moving up to third. The tournament has a total prize fund of approximately $148,000, with the winner taking home almost $62,000.
