The Attorney General's Office issued citations against 88 Dunkin', McDonald's and Subway locations across Massachusetts for violating the state's child labor laws.
The citations, which include a combined total of $226,385 in fines for the fast food employers, were brought against Cafua Management Company LLC, The Brewster Company LLC, and Knight Food Service Inc., according to an announcement Tuesday from Attorney General Joy Campbell.
'Our child labor laws exist to protect young workers and prioritize their safety and education as they learn new skills, earn income, and contribute to their communities,' said AG Campbell.
'My office will continue to enforce these laws to empower our youth and remind employers that Massachusetts is serious about protecting its workforce.'
None of the Dunkin', McDonald's and Subway restaurants across the Bay State had permits for the minors to be employed over the past five years, and all had 16- and 17-year-old employees working past the state's daily nine-hour limit, Campbell said.
The teenagers working at Dunkin' between February 2020 and February 2023 also worked without an adult supervisor after 8 p.m., and the franchise operator did not obtain work permits before hiring the children, Campbell said.
The attorney general's office issued $140,000 in penalties against Cafua, which had Dunkin' locations in over 80 locations across the entire state, including in Greater Boston, the North Shore and the southeastern coast, and Central, Eastern and Western Massachusetts.
The attorney general's office also issued $63,930 in penalties against Brewster for violations of child labor laws at eight McDonald's franchise locations from May 2021 to May 2024. The locations are in Everett, Hanover, Woburn, Weymouth, Quincy, Norwell, Malden and Revere.
As for the teenage Subway workers, Campbell said they were also working past 8 p.m. without an adult supervisor and weren't allowed to have meal breaks after working for over six hours.
The attorney general's office issued $22,455 in penalties against Knight for its violations from February 2023 to August 2024. Knight operates multiple Subway locations across the state, including one in Brockton.
Under Massachusetts child labor law, teens aged 16 and 17 cannot work for more than nine hours a day, six days a week and 48 hours a week. The attorney general office encourages Massachusetts workers who believe their workplace rights are being violated to file a complaint at mass.gov/ago/fld, or call the attorney general's Fair Labor Hotline at 617-727-3465 for more information.

McDonald's Shares Slip as GLP-1 Risks Spur Rare Sell Rating

(Bloomberg) -- McDonald's Corp. shares slipped on Tuesday after Redburn Atlantic gave the burger chain its sole sell rating, saying shifting consumer patterns due to weight-loss drugs and inflation are cause for concern. Most Read from Bloomberg Shares of McDonald's fell as much as 1.8% to a March low on the downgrade, a two-notch cut from Redburn's previous buy rating. Redburn held a buy rating on the stock since initiating coverage in 2023. As more Americans turn to GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic to lose weight, McDonald's could see as much as a $428 million annual impact to revenue, representing about 1% of system sales, Redburn Atlantic analysts Chris Luyckx and Edward Lewis wrote. 'A 1% drag today could easily build to 10% or more over time, particularly for brands skewed toward lower-income consumers or group occasions.' The analysts also cut the price target on McDonald's to a Street-low $260, implying a more than 13% decline from where the stock closed on Tuesday. Shares have dropped for seven straight days, their longest losing streak in nearly 12 years, after closing just below a record high in mid-May. Redburn's lowered recommendation was just the latest downgrade for the fast-food giant, which was recently knocked down to hold-equivalent ratings at Morgan Stanley, Loop Capital and Erste Group. Analysts remain largely split on the stock, with 22 buy-equivalent ratings, 18 hold-equivalent ratings and an average price target of $332, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. McDonald's US same-stores sales fell 3.6% in the first-quarter of this year, marking the largest decline since 2020 when people were stuck at home during the pandemic. Fast-food restaurants like McDonald's have also seen a decline in traffic in 40 of the past 43 months, according to the analysts. In addition to the McDonald's call, Redburn also launched coverage of Domino's Pizza Inc. with a sell rating, while starting Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. as a new neutral. YUM! Brands, Inc., which owns popular brands KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, was raised to buy from neutral given the stock's 'reasonable' valuation. Despite the slump, McDonald's has increased its average transaction amount through pricing, but lower-income consumers are now opting to eat more at home as the price difference between home and restaurant food increases, according to the report.

Shake Shack claimed second place with a 3.7 average from 17,018 reviews across 45 locations. The chain's crinkle-cut fries, which were temporarily removed from the menu in 2013 and brought back due to popular demand, have since regained favor among customers. The chicken chain's waffle fries, beloved for their dippable design and crispy bite, continue to be a standout menu item. Burger King followed closely behind with a 1.92 average from 623 reviews, reinforcing ongoing criticism of its fries despite repeated recipe overhauls.
