£50m Joshua Reynolds portrait goes on show

An 18th Century painting described as "the finest portrait by one of Britain's greatest artists" has gone on display in Bradford.
Valued at £50m, Portrait of Mai by Sir Joshua Reynolds is on show at the city's Cartwright Hall, in Manningham.
The painting, which depicts the first Polynesian to visit Britain, is touring the country for the first time since it was saved for the nation in 2023.
The National Portrait Gallery said the artwork was the "most significant acquisition ever made" and would be shared between galleries in the UK and the US.
Mai was a native of Raiatea, an island now part of French Polynesia.
He travelled to England as part of Captain James Cook's second voyage and was received by royalty and the intellectual elite between 1774 and 1776.
After embarking on a grand tour of Britain, Mai became something of a celebrity and had his portrait painted in London.
Mai returned to his homeland in 1777, where he died two years later.
During its time in Bradford, Portrait of Mai will be accompanied by a new engagement programme, created with youth panel members from Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture and young people from Common/Wealth theatre company.
A summit, led and arranged by young people, will take place on 9 August and a late museum event is being organised for 14 August, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Miranda Stacey, Head of National Partnerships at the National Portrait Gallery, said: "We are delighted to be launching Journeys with Mai in Bradford during its important UK City of Culture year."
She thanked supporters for making their portraits accessible to people across the UK.
It will be on show at Cartwright Hall until 17 August before going on display in Cambridge and Plymouth before it travels to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles in 2026.

500 Years of Author Portraits

Nowadays, so many author photos show writers staring pensively out a window or off into the distance, or gazing intensely at the camera, cupping their faces with their hands. WRITERS REVEALED: Treasures From the British Library and the National Portrait Gallery, London (National Portrait Gallery, 288 pp., $35) looks beyond these contrived literary poses for unspoken insights into the people behind the words. Bringing together paintings and photographs of British writers from the past 500 years — alongside the subjects' notes, letters and other ephemera — the book's editors, Alexandra Ault and Catharine MacLeod, offer contemporary readers a greater connection with some of the most familiar names in the history of English literature.

After A Photo From Her Live TV Segment Went Viral, Larsa Pippen Responded To Criticism Of Her 'Noticeably Overfilled' Appearance

Last week, Larsa Pippen found herself at the center of public attention after a photo of her on Fox 5's Good Night New York went viral. Larsa, 51, was criticized for her appearance, with several internet users — including cosmetic professionals, like Dr. Mai Kaga — sharing their thoughts. Kaga, who is a board-certified aesthetics provider, said that the Real Housewives star looked 'noticeably overfilled' in a now-viral video. 'Larsa Pippen, Real Housewives of Miami, has all the money in the world, and ended up looking like this,' she said, suggesting that Larsa's filler had 'gone wrong.' Related: Kaga captioned the video, 'From excessive facial filler to questionable surgery choices, her transformation is a reminder that not all cosmetic work is good work. Even with unlimited funds, choosing the right injector matters.' Before long, Larsa hopped into the comments to address all the talk around her appearance. 'Honey I had PRP and had an allergic reaction so chill out,' she wrote. PRP refers to platelet-rich plasma, which is a cosmetic procedure that involves a patient's own blood cells being injected back into their face in order to 'accelerate healing in a specific area,' per Johns Hopkins Medicine. Related: Larsa doubled down in a video shared to her Instagram stories, in which she said, 'Hey guys, you can relax. I had PRP on my face a couple days ago, so my face was a bit swollen. It looks like it's coming down. So you guys can just calm down.' And later on, the reality star shared another video addressing the photo. "So, I feel like that photo went viral… I'm wondering if someone made it look like that, because this is what my face looks like, you guys. I am on TV, so you know what I look like," she said. Related: 'I did have PRP, I did have an allergic reaction to the PRP, which I didn't even know you could have. So my face is a bit swollen. But it doesn't look like that. So, keep on hating guys,' she said. Kaga later responded to Larsa's original Instagram comment, writing in a separate video caption, 'Overfilled vs allergic reaction? The biggest culprit here is nobody saying NO. No to unnecessary treatments, no to too much filler, no the wrong procedures. Whose fault is it? The patient or the injector?' She also wrote in the comments, 'Double board certified physician here AKA Honey. Allergic reactions to PRP are extremely rare. You simply will not find allergies to your own blood cells all that common. Second- allergic reactions don't last 3 seasons on a streaming network. Honestly, this post really was not about Larsa, but about cautioning the current and future generations about being over treated and overfilled, unnecessarily and covering up your own natural features that make you uniquely beautiful. If even one person can learn from us pointing out what being overfilled looks like, it's worth it.' Related: Well then. Let us know what you think in the comments. How Rich Are the 1% of ‘The Gilded Age' in 2025?

In the third season of HBO's 'The Gilded Age,' set in 1883 New York, a humble footman comes into $300,000 and instantly becomes richer than his old-money employers. Across the street, a new-money family lords over their neighbors with an unspecified and unmatched fortune. A pharmacist's income is enough to propel him to the upper echelons of elite Black society. Money is abundant, but figures are vague. Following the messy dramas of these moneyed denizens, the show is loosely based on the real aristocrats, socialites and tycoons of the period when rapid industrialization catapulted some people into extreme wealth and exacerbated inequality. Here's how much money we're actually talking about, what that money could buy and how it compares to the wealthiest people in 2025.
