
IIT-M launches two new courses
CHENNAI: IIT Madras has launched two new BTech courses in computational engineering and biomedical engineering starting this academic session, according to an official release. The courses, with a student strength of 40 each, will be offered by the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering.
Students who clear JEE (Advanced) can choose these two new programmes in the upcoming Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA) counselling. Both programmes offer students the opportunity to upgrade to the five-year dual degree (BTech + MTech) through Interdisciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) programmes, three of which — Computational Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Complex System Dynamics — are coordinated by the faculty of Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering.
Sayan Gupta, head, Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, IIT-M, said, 'These cutting-edge programmes will equip students with a strong systems approach to problem solving, blending core engineering principles with the latest technological advancements.'

Bengaluru: Infosys cofounder and chairman Nandan Nilekani committed a second multi-year grant to AI4Bharat—an open-source initiative at IIT Madras that is building foundational AI models for Indian languages. Its work spans speech recognition, machine translation, text-to-speech, and language understanding for all major Indian languages. In 2020, Nilekani saw the transformative potential of AI in Indian languages. Nilekani-founded EkStep Foundation and AI4Bharat began investing in language digitisation, data infrastructure, and early models tailored to Indian linguistic diversity. Applications were built within weeks of ChatGPT's release, ranging from chatbots in regional languages to integrations in governance and education. AI4Bharat's models became the underlying infrastructure for this deployment. AI4Bharat has become the language backbone of India's AI stack. Its open-source speech, translation, and text-to-speech models now power key public digital platforms. Agricultural chatbots like Kisan e-Mitra use these models to deliver real-time information to farmers. AI4Bharat's language datasets—meticulously collected in all 22 constitutionally recognised Indian languages—have been released as public goods, openly available for use through the AI4Bharat website and integrated into AIKosh, India's open AI repository. IIT Madras Pravartak to offer online courses on AR/VR and Salesforce B2C Commerce Cloud
IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, IIT Madras' technology and innovation hub, will offer two online courses on Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and Salesforce B2C Commerce Cloud (SFCC) aimed at skilling students and professionals for the industry. The AR/VR programme, offered in partnership with VyVoxel, an international AR/VR/MR company, is a 60-hour online course that will start from June 14. Candidates can register for the course till June 13 at For the 8-week SFCC course, Pravartak has partnered with Codenatives, a US-based IT company.
