Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan is confident his bowling group can find form as his side's three-match ODI series against the West Indies heads into a deciding game.
The West Indies proved too strong in the second ODI of the series in Trinidad, with Roston Chase and Justin Greaves combining for an unbeaten partnership of 77 to help the Caribbean side chase down the adjusted victory target of 181 in a rain-affected contest at Brian Lara Stadium.
Chase and Greaves took a particular liking to Pakistan's part-timers of Saim Ayub and Salman Agha, with the pair each conceding 33 runs from their spell as the West Indies squared the series at 1-1 ahead of the final match at the same ground on Tuesday.
While Rizwan wouldn't confirm the duo will retain their place in Pakistan's side for the series decider, he backed them to perform well should they win selection for the eagerly-awaited contest.
'You could say our fifth bowler gave away too many runs (today), but in recent years, Salman Agha and Saim Ayub have both bowled well for us,' Rizwan said post-match.
'Saim didn't have the best day today, but he performed well in the T20Is. That's just part of the game.'
The victory for the West Indies was their first over Pakistan in more than six years, with their most previous win against the Asian side prior to this match coming at the 2019 edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup when they cruised to a 7-wkt triumph in Nottingham.
The landscape is very different now for the West Indies, who missed qualification for the most recent 50-over World Cup in India in 2023 and are chasing a return to the major tournament in 2027 according to coach Daren Sammy and skipper Shai Hope.
Sammy said prior to the series against Pakistan that the matches were serving as preparation for the next 50-over World Cup and Hope confirmed the West Indies are trying to improve in all facets of the game.

FIBA Asia Cup participation good for Qatar team's future: Saadoun Al Kuwari

Tribune News Network Doha The 31st edition of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 5 to 17, concluded with notable achievements for the Qatar national basketball team. Organized by FIBA Asia, the tournament featured 16 teams, with Qatar competing in a challenging Group A alongside defending champions Australia (winners in 2017 and 2022), Lebanon, a four-time finalist and the most successful Arab team in the competition's history (2001, 2005, 2007, 2022), and South Korea, a powerhouse in Asian basketball. Historically, Qatar has been a strong contender among Arab teams, securing podium finishes in 2003 and 2005, making them one of the region's most accomplished sides in the tournament's history. Qatar's 2025 roster was a blend of youthful energy and seasoned talent, included 12 players: Brandon Goodwin, Alen Hadzibegovic, Seydou Ndai, Zain Eddin Badri, Tyler Harris, Aladji Magassa, Omar Saad, Mustafa Ndao, Mohamed Bashir, Babacar Dieng, Abdulrahman Saad, and Mahmoud Darwish. With an average age of 25.2 years, Qatar fielded the youngest Arab team in the tournament, showcasing a promising future. The team also boasted an average height of 197 cm, providing a significant advantage in rebounding and interior defense compared to their competitors. Under the guidance of Turkish head coach Hakan Demir, Qatar underwent an intensive preparation program that included training camps in Doha, Turkey, and South Korea, as well as friendly matches against high-caliber opponents. The coaching staff focused on enhancing physical fitness, strengthening defensive strategies, and developing fast-paced offensive plays that capitalized on the team's height and transition speed. Qatar's participation in the Asia Cup served as a critical step in their long-term strategy to bolster their continental presence and prepare for the FIBA World Cup 2027 qualifiers, set to begin in November 2025. The tournament provided Qatar's young players with invaluable experience against diverse playing styles, particularly those of Australia and South Korea, while testing their readiness for future global competitions. Entering the tournament, Qatar aimed to advance beyond the group stage and reach the knockout rounds, despite facing formidable opponents known for their speed and long-range shooting. The team relied on its fighting spirit and determination to deliver a competitive performance. Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary-General of the Qatar Basketball Federation and Director of National Teams, emphasized the significance of the tournament: 'Our participation in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 in Jeddah is part of a clear strategic plan by the Qatar Basketball Federation to build a strong generation of players equipped with the physical and technical skills needed to compete at the continental and international levels in the long term. 'For months, we have prepared our team through rigorous training programs and international camps, alongside friendly matches against top-tier teams to test and enhance our players' capabilities and cohesion. Our squad's average age of 25.2 years reflects our investment in the future, balanced by the experience of veteran players who guide and support their younger teammates. 'Facing powerhouses like Australia, Lebanon, and South Korea in our group provided a golden opportunity to gain experience and elevate our performance. These teams represent diverse, fast-paced playing styles, making the matches invaluable for our development. 'Our primary goal was to deliver a respectable performance and progress beyond the group stage. More importantly, we aimed to instill a winning mentality and self-confidence in our players while building a solid foundation for Qatar's basketball future. 'We've received positive feedback from coaches and officials at the tournament, who praised our players' level and fighting spirit. This reinforces our belief that Qatar's basketball future is bright if we continue on this path.' Looking ahead to FIBA World Cup 2027 Qatar's participation in the Asia Cup is a stepping stone toward the FIBA World Cup 2027, which Qatar will host for the first time in the Middle East from August 27 to September 12, 2027. The tournament will feature 32 teams, with matches played across four main arenas, culminating in the final at Lusail Arena. The World Cup qualifiers, involving 80 nations competing for 31 spots, will begin in November 2025. Qatar, as the host nation, is automatically qualified and has been drawn in Group D alongside Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and India for the Asia-Oceania qualifiers. The top three teams from each group will advance to the second round, where they will be split into two groups, with the top three teams from each, plus the highest-ranking fourth-placed team, securing World Cup berths. The qualifiers will be conducted over six windows from November 2025 to March 2027, with matches played in a home-and-away format. The windows are scheduled as follows: November 24 and December 2, 2025; February 23 and March 3, 2026; June 29 and July 7, 2026; August 24 and September 1, 2026; November 23 and December 1, 2026; and February 22 and March 2, 2027. Qatar's participation in the 2027 World Cup will mark their second appearance in the tournament, following their debut in Japan in 2006. With a blend of youthful talent, strategic preparation, Qatar's basketball program is poised for a promising future on the global stage.

Thomas Muller gets warm welcome from Whitecaps fans in Vancouver

dpa San Jose, California Former Bayern Munich icon Thomas Müller received a warm reception from Vancouver Whitecaps fans as he touched down in Canada on Wednesday evening to begin the next chapter of his career. Müller, 35, was greeted at Vancouver International Airport by representatives of the Musqueam Indian Band, who welcomed him with a traditional drum march and a speech from Chief Wayne Sparrow. The 2014 World Cup winner was not given a contract extension at Bayern this year and left the club for which he won countless titles, including trebles in 2013 and 2020. He now has a contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps that runs through the end of 2026. Müller signed his first autographs for supporters in the arrivals hall before heading upstairs to a sports bar, where fans were watching the first leg of the Canadian Championship semi-final against Forge FC. The competition's winner will be crowned Canadian champions. 'I am happy to be here, to be a Whitecap,' Müller told the crowd. 'We wanna create the future, but the game is still running so we have to support the guys.' The match ended 2-2, though Müller had departed in a dark van before the final whistle. The veteran forward is set to face the media for the first time as a Whitecap on Thursday and is expected to train with his new teammates the following day. Club officials expect him to make his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut at home against Houston Dynamo FC on Sunday. The MLS season, already in full swing since February, runs separately from the Canadian Championship, which is an annual tournament. MLS is the top-flight professional soccer league in the US and Canada, though it only features three Canadian sides.

Defender Cristian Romero named new Tottenham captain

PAMedia/dpa Udine, Italy Centre-back Cristian Romero has been announced as Tottenham's new captain. Son Heung-min had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for silverware. However, Son's departure to Los Angeles FC earlier this month meant new head coach Thomas Frank was on the lookout for another leader and he has turned to Romero, who started as captain in the Europa League final win over Manchester United. 'I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain,' Frank told the official club website. 'He was very honoured and very happy about it. It's a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season. 'I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he's always pushing the team. 'I want a leadership group as well. Of course, one will wear the armband and be the captain, but I would like to have as many leaders as possible, four to five in the leadership group who can help, because it's the same with me, I can't do everything on my own and need a superb coaching staff around me. 'I will name that leadership group after the window to give me time to assess everything.' Romero is only Tottenham's third captain of the last decade after Hugo Lloris held the role for eight years between 2015 and 2023. Son picked up the baton under Frank's predecessor Ange Postecoglou. Injuries affected Son in the 2024-25 campaign and Guglielmo Vicario, Romero and James Maddison were all given the armband at various points. Postecoglou frequently talked up the leadership qualities of World Cup winner Romero, who has been at the club since 2022. It was Romero who started as captain for Spurs' 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final and he also wore the armband for both legs of their semi-final wins against Bodo/Glimt and the quarter-final away triumph at Eintracht Frankfurt.
