Shekar Kapur reveals he was thrown out of Bobby Deol's Barsaat, says, 'I didn't understand Dharmendra's...' In the glitzy and glamorous world of Bollywood, we only hear the success stories of blockbusters, but what happens behind the scenes when the curtain falls is a lot more than what meets the eye. One such similar tale is of the film that was released in the year 1995. This film is marked as the grand launchpad for a star kid. But what was supposed to be a smooth debut became marked by delays, a change of directors, and decades of speculation over why acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur left the project midway. The film that we are talking about is none other than Barsaat. This featured Dharmendra's younger son, Bobby Deol, opposite Twinkle Khanna. During that time, the debut of Star Kid was considered a major event. The film Barsaat was initially set to be directed by Shekhar Kapur, known for classics like Mr India and Masoom. However, halfway through the production, Rajkumar Santoshi took over, leading to the assumption that Kapur had walked away from the film. Now, years after the release of the film, both Kapur and Bobby have stated the reality. Why did Shekhar Kapur leave Barsaat halfway? Speaking to Filmfare, Shekhar Kapur clarified, 'I never walked out; I have been thrown out of films. Barsaat was an idea that was being developed, and I think I wasn't quite understanding Dharamji's (Dharmendra) ideas. Then Sunny was in London, and he called the next guy, who took over, Rajkumar Santoshi. So I talked to Raj ji and told him that since you have done films before with all of them, can you talk to Dharam ji? And he said, 'Haan, main sambhal leta hoon.' (Yes, I'll handle it). And the next day I found out he was directing it. That's it. That's all that happened. People say I walked out of it, but let me be honest, I didn't walk out of it. Mind you, I immediately went and made Bandit Queen.' Bobby Deol on Barsaat Bobby Deol, speaking on the same, said, 'I started shooting for the film very early, and Shekhar Kapur was the director. But my father told him that he didn't want to delay it. He told Shekhar, 'You go do your film; I will find somebody else.' And I think Rajkumar Santoshi was waiting to direct my film. I got lucky with him.' On The Great Indian Kapil Show, Bobby also joked, 'Maybe that's why Shekhar ran away. Shekhar Kapur. He was scared. But then Raj directed the film. But I never thought I was under pressure.' Despite the uncertainties that the film saw, Barsaat became a commercial success and was a superhit.
