BST Hyde Park cancel Sunday performances after Jeff Lynne's ELO pull out

Leader Live3 days ago
Musician Lynne, 77, who was billed to play alongside his rock band on Sunday, withdrew on the advice of doctors following a 'systemic infection'.
A post shared by BST Hyde Park (@bsthydepark)
A statement from organisers said: 'Following the news that Jeff Lynne's ELO will not be able to perform at BST Hyde Park due to medical reasons, Sunday 13 July's event will sadly be cancelled.
'Ticket holders will be refunded and contacted directly by their ticket agent with further details.'
It added: 'Tonight's performance marks the final night of an incredible edition of BST Hyde Park and we look forward to seeing everyone next year.'
Veteran musician Stevie Wonder will be taking to the London stage on Saturday evening in what will now be the festival's final event of 2025.
US rock band The Doobie Brothers, blues rock singer Steve Winwood, singer-songwriter Dhani Harrison and rock band Cats In Space were among those slated to perform on Sunday ahead of the rock band's headline performance.
An earlier statement from BST said: 'Jeff Lynne is heartbroken to report that he will not be able to perform at tomorrow's BST Hyde Park show.
'Jeff has been battling a systemic infection and is currently in the care of a team of doctors who have advised him that performing is simply not possible at this time nor will he be able to reschedule.
'The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff's mind today – and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time.'
It comes after the rock band, best known for their hit song Mr Blue Sky, pulled out of a performance at Manchester's Co-Op Live, due to take place on July 10.
The band was formed in Birmingham in 1970 by Lynne, multi-instrumentalist Roy Wood and drummer Bev Bevan, and first split in 1986.
They are known for fusing classical music, Beatles-style pop and futuristic rock visuals, and were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017.
They are behind the 1970s hits Livin' Thing, Mr Blue Sky, Telephone Line and Evil Woman.
Singer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer Lynne resurrected the band in 2014.
On September 14 that year, he teamed up with the BBC Concert Orchestra to play some of the band's greatest hits at a comeback concert at BST Hyde Park.
In 2019 the band released the album From Out Of Nowhere which soared to number one on the UK albums charts, joining Discovery (1979), Time (1981) and their compilation album, All Over the World: The Very Best Of Electric Light Orchestra (2005).
ELO also had a number of top 10 songs in the UK singles charts, including Don't Bring Me Down, Hold On Tight and Shine A Little Love.
Lynne was made an OBE in the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours list for services to music, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 2015.

The winner takes it all but Leah Williamson won't ‘banish Abba' for Sweden clash

The Swedish band's 'Does Your Mother Know' became a key track on the Williamson-curated dressing room playlist during England's triumphant Euro 2022 campaign, where they beat Sweden 4-0 in the last four – a defeat made 'easier to bear' by the use of the song, according to Abba's own Bjorn Ulvaeus. It was a closer affair when they met in the qualifiers for this tournament, drawing twice, including the goalless July 2024 stalemate that was enough for England to book a direct place in the finals. Hearing some Swedish fans had claimed Abba were better than the Beatles, and therefore Sweden would beat England, Williamson replied: 'I don't (agree with that) I'm afraid. One might be easier to dance to, but no. 'I don't think that will be on the playlist, but it worked in 2022 so I don't want to banish Abba completely.' The England centre-back is gearing up for a battle with Arsenal team-mate Stina Blackstenius. In May, the Swedish forward struck in the winning goal in Lisbon, where the Gunners lifted the Champions League trophy with a 1-0 victory over heavy favourites Barcelona. Blackstenius has already contributed two goals at these Euros for Group C winners Sweden, but is just one of the threats on what Williamson feels is a 'very organised team' that 'work for each other' and 'deserve a bit more recognition'. Williamson and Blackstenius are Arsenal team-mates (Zac Goodwin/PA) 'Stina is an incredibly powerful footballer,' said Williamson. 'I think she's very intelligent with her runs, she's a hard player to play against in that respect. I was celebrating her success at Arsenal, and not so much now. 'So we'll see, but she's a great player and she has been for many years now, so her experience speaks for itself.' Despite their familiarity, an international tournament is a rare chance for the club-mates to properly battle it out. 'It's different,' explained Williamson. 'Obviously playing against each other in training (it's) maybe in a drill with restrictions, but it's very rare that I'll play against her in this setting. 'So I enjoy it. I like Stina, so it's tough to just remove all that to then just go at it, and you don't want to focus too much (on it). 'There's loads of different things that come into play when you play against a team-mate, but I think I've know Stina long enough now that it's kind of fun. 'I know who she is, and it's time for us to focus on us.' Williamson captained England to the trophy at Wembley in 2022 but missed the World Cup after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in April 2023, just months before the tournament. She added: 'I was part of that squad, and I will forever be proud to have been part of that squad, but we don't want it to be the only one. 'It's a constant driver. You want to do more. You always want to do more, and I'd like to say that on that day I felt as happy as I ever felt, and that probably would have been enough for me, but the next day it creeps around and everybody wants more all the time.'

Game of Thrones stars launches whisky - calling it 'the ultimate Scottish toast to the world'

SLANJ Spirits recently launched its debut SLANJ Whisky, a new blended malt from the owners behind the well known kilt shops and actor Rory McCann. The new whisky is the brainchild of three long-time friends – Brian and Craig Halley, founders of SLANJ Kilts and Stuart Montgomerie – who have dreamed of launching a Scotch for over a decade. The trio secured the SLANJ Whisky brand name nearly ten years ago and have waited patiently for the right moment and the right blend. One of the brand's most recognisable investors is actor Rory McCann, best known for his role as The Hound in Game of Thrones. A long-time whisky lover, McCann was closely involved in the final blend and development process, ensuring the result felt true to the brand's relaxed but quality-focused ethos. He said, 'I've always loved whisky, but SLANJ hits different. It's smooth, no smoke, no fuss - just a bold, easy-going dram anyone can enjoy. I'm proud to back a whisky that's pure Scottish spirit, without the rules. It's the ultimate Scottish toast to the world.' This first-edition blend is made from 70% Speyside single malt matured in sherry casks and 30% Highland single malt matured in bourbon casks. Bottled at 46%, non-chill filtered and with natural colour, it delivers a smooth and rounded profile with fruit, subtle sweetness and gentle spice – while deliberately holding back on any smoke. 'Scotch doesn't need to be sacred to be exceptional,' said Brian Halley, founder of SLANJ Spirits. 'We've always loved the craft, but we wanted to create something that felt less like a ritual and more like a moment. 'Something people could enjoy instinctively, without second- guessing how to drink it. We've held onto the SLANJ name for nearly a decade, waiting for the right time and the right whisky.' He added, 'After years in the making, SLANJ feels like the whisky Scotland's been waiting for.' With a strong background in retail, design and brand-building, the Halley brothers bring creative direction, while Montgomery, following a highly successful career in banking in London, brings strategic and commercial insight from his current role as an investor and adviser to several Scottish businesses. To bring their vision to life, the founders enlisted the expertise of Douglas Laing & Co., Scotland's leading independent blender and bottler specialising the creation of artisan, small batch and single cask Scotch. Together, they developed a whisky with depth, balance and broad appeal. With Laing's support, the team secured a sustainable and consistent supply of quality malt for future bottlings, ensuring the brand's longevity. Renowned whisky writer Charles MacLean has given the whisky his seal of approval, saying: 'SLANJ Whisky has been years in the making and it has been especially rewarding to follow its journey and see what the team has achieved. We are all very proud of this moreish blend!' The whisky is aimed at both seasoned whisky drinkers and those just discovering the category – a whisky with craft at its core, but no rules on how to enjoy it. SLANJ is launching in the UK with ambitions to roll out internationally, as the brand looks to bring its modern Scotch sensibility to a global audience. The team is already exploring future limited editions and special releases, with more to come from this bold new player in the whisky world – one pour at a time. SLANJ whisky is available to buy from Master of Malt for £48. You can buy a bottle here.

Primark's new £10 summer top is perfect & Other Stories dupe – it has pretty detail to flatter mum tums & cinches you in

PRIMARK is renowned for releasing stylish items that remind shoppers of luxury versions - but with a more purse-friendly price tag. And the high street giant has delivered the goods yet again in the form of a £10 T-shirt. 5 The heavyweight top comes in brown or ivory and features a knot detail across the front. This pretty touch is perfect for flattering mum tums and giving a 'cinched in' appearance. Available in sizes XS to XL, the T-shirt also boasts a gold button across the knot for some added luxury. Staff at Primark's Lincoln store hailed the new summer arrivals as "10/10 no notes" as they shared a clip of them on TikTok. And it looks like fashion fans are in full agreement, as one gushed: "This is cute." "What a slay", insisted another. Meanwhile, a third cried: "We need omg." Savvy shoppers may also notice that the high street giant's T-shirt bears a striking resemblance to a pricier version. The & Other Stories Knot-Detail T-Shirt is also available in white or brown. Designed with a round neck and three-quarter sleeves, they say the knot-detail at the front "creates a cinched waist with decorative gathers". Primark's mini dress is a copy of a £135 designer version - it'll give you a gorgeous hourglass figure & perfect for date night The only difference between the two? A saving of £17. The & Other Stories version is priced at £27 while Primark's dupe will only set you back £10. So if you're on a tight budget then you may want to head down to your nearest Primark. Dupe delight The new £10 tops aren't the only dupes that shoppers are going wild for in Primark. Fashion fans have also spotted £18 summer dresses that are great for looking stylish without breaking your bank account. The retail giant's Textured Button Midi Dress is lightweight with a textured finish and midi length design. It is available in sizes six to 22 and comes in a range of colours and patterns including green and cream striped, blue gingham and red striped. Describing the new frock on their website, Primark bosses say: "Cut a chic figure and get set for the compliments to come rolling in as you rock this elegant textured midi dress. "The midi length is super sophisticated, meanwhile the lightweight fabric is perfect for staying cool on those warm weather days. 5 5 "The striped textured finish lends a stylish look and feel, while the button detailing to the front effortlessly elevates the look. "This piece is finished with lightly puffed sleeves and a form-flattering tie to the waistline." And savvy shoppers may notice that the dress is the perfect dupe for the Starlight Midi Dress, priced at £89, from Nobody's Child. After spotting them in store, fashion fan Chloe said on TikTok: "Nobody's Child dupes in Primark. "I LOVE the style of Nobody's Child dresses, so it was great to see some similar styles in more affordable prices if you also love that style. "I only went in for one thing, but you never leave Primark with just what you went in looking for." Fashion fans are also in a frenzy over Primark's new £6 Zara dupe that's a summer essential, half the price and "so cute". Many of us will own or recognise the iconic Wide Strap Vest Tops from Zara. But now, Primark has released a brand new range of vests that look practically identical. Why Primark is great for looking expensive on a budget By Clemmie Fieldsend, Fabulous Fashion Editor AS someone who's no stranger to grabbing a last-minute outfit from Primark for a night out, it's about time that celebrities started catching on too. For as long as I've been heading out, Primark has been my go-to for those 'I have nothing to wear' moments, rushing in at the last minute to find something perfect. And I'm definitely not alone - on any Friday or Saturday night, you'll find plenty of shoppers doing the same thing, right before closing time. But no matter what, Primark always delivers. Now, Rita Ora is leading the charge, showing that you can snag a designer-worthy look without spending a fortune at high-end stores. While Rita's not rushing in last minute for a red carpet outfit, she's proving you can achieve the same high-impact style for much less. Looking stunning in her tailored suit alongside her mum Vera, Rita fit right in among the other A-listers dripping in Prada, Dior, and Victoria Beckham - if anything, she looked even better than some of the guests at The Fashion Awards. With Myleene Klass and Roxy Horner already jumping on the Primark bandwagon, I'm sure more stars will be following suit soon enough.
