‘Explosion': Terrifying incident on US street

News.com.au18-05-2025

A car explosion near a fertility clinic in California has been described as an 'intentional act of violence' by police, which killed one person and severely damaged buildings.
Police are now investigating the Saturday morning incident, which occurred not far from downtown Palm Springs, with the blast rocking the neighbourhood including several businesses.
The car may have been parked outside American Reproductive Centers, Mayor Ron DeHarte told The New York Post.
'We're still trying to determine a cause,' Mr DeHarte said. 'The police and fire are down there right now. First, we heard it might be a helicopter crash or a gas leak but that's been ruled out. We should know pretty quickly what it was. There was quite a bit of damage to surrounding buildings as well.'
Palm Springs Fire Chief Paul Alvarado said the 'blast appears to be an intentional act of violence'.
'The blast field extends for blocks with several buildings damaged, some severely,' he said.
The fertility clinic confirmed no one from their facility was harmed, but that one person was killed and several were injured.
'I really have no clue what happened,' said Dr Maher Abdallah, who runs the clinic. 'Thank God today happened to be a day that we have no patients.'
Embryos stored at the facility were also unharmed, according to the clinic.
'We are heavily conducting a complete safety inspection and have confirmed that our operations and sensitive medical areas were not impacted by the blast,' the fertility clinic told the BBC.
American Reproductive Centers is described as Coachella Valley's first and only full-service fertility centre and IVF lab, according to its website and has been operating since 2006.
A number of law enforcement bodies have descended on the scene including investigators from the FBI, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would also help assess what happened.
Palm Springs police confirmed the death but the identity of the victim is not yet known, while they are considering all possibilities including whether it was an act of terrorism.
The FBI 'will be investigating whether this was an intentional act,' US Attorney Bill Essayli of the Central District of California wrote on X.
President Donald Trump's Attorney General Pam Bondi described the incident as 'unforgivable' and said federal agents were working to determine exactly what had happened.
'But let me be clear: the Trump administration understands that women and mothers are the heartbeat of America. Violence against a fertility clinic is unforgivable,' she said in a statement on social media.
One witness Claudio Chavez, who has a custom upholstery shop nearby told The Post it 'felt like an explosion' when the terrifying incident unfolded.
'It was so loud it felt like it shook my entire core,' he said.
'I was inside my business waiting for a client. I was sitting in my chair and it was like suddenly, like a bomb went off.
'Inside I just saw pieces of debris fall from the ceiling. Walked outside and saw my front window had totally shattered.'
He added there was a large amount of smoke too.
'Half of one building seemed to have been blown off,' he noted.
Aerial footage showed a burnt-out car in a parking lot, while the fertility's clinic's building roof hqe been caved in, with debris blown out widely across the street and bricks scattered everywhere.
Restaurant manager Rhino Williams, 47, was a block away when he heard the explosion and sprinted to the scene. He was forced to cover his nose with his shirt as he smelled burning plastic and rubber, he told the Associated Press.
Nima Tabrizi, 37, was also nearby inside a cannabis shop when he felt a massive explosion, describing a devastating scene afterwards.
'The building just shook, and we go outside and there's massive cloud smoke,' Tabrizi said. 'Crazy explosion. It felt like a bomb went off. … We went up to the scene, and we saw human remains.'

Diddy on trial: Everything you need to know

If you've been fascinated by the Erin Patterson trial, there's another podcast you probably want to follow: it's the BBC's Diddy on Trial. This is your quick round-up to bring you up to speed with Diddy's trial, which started on the 12 May. Since launching this podcast in November 2024, we have had five criminal counts against Diddy, he's been denied bail three times, faced accusations of witness tampering, lost a lawyer, featured in a Kanye — or Ye — track from behind bars, gone grey, demanded a gag order, launched an Instagram campaign and accused the government of racism. And that's just on the federal side of things. On the civil side, we've had bombshell balcony-dangling allegations, people from Michael Jackson to OJ woven into the web of the 'Diddy-verse', claims against Jay–Z issued and then withdrawn, while the Texan trial lawyer Tony Buzbee told the BBC he has over 150 cases he could raise against Diddy. What does Sean 'Diddy' Combs say? He's denied all the allegations and consistently said he's never sexually assaulted anyone — man, or woman, adult or minor.

Elon Musk deletes post claiming Donald Trump is 'in the Epstein files'

Elon Musk has deleted an allegation linking Donald Trump with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein that he posted on social media this week. The tech billionaire alleged on Thursday that the Republican leader is featured in secret government files on former associates of Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while he faced sex trafficking charges. The Trump administration has acknowledged it is reviewing tens of thousands of documents, videos and investigative material that his "MAGA" movement says will unmask public figures complicit in Epstein's crimes. "Time to drop the really big bomb: (Trump) is in the Epstein files," Musk posted on his social media platform X, as his growing feud with the president boiled over into a spectacularly public row. "That is the real reason they have not been made public." Mr Musk did not reveal which files he was talking about, and offered no evidence for his claim. In fact, he wrote in a follow-up message: "Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out." However, he appeared to have deleted both tweets by Saturday morning. Supporters on the conspiratorial end of Trump's base allege that Epstein's associates had their roles in his crimes covered up by government officials and others. They point the finger at Democrats and Hollywood celebrities — although not at Trump himself. No official source has ever confirmed that the president appears in any of the material. The US president knew and socialised with Epstein, but has denied spending time on Little Saint James, the private island in the US Virgin Islands where prosecutors alleged Epstein trafficked underage girls for sex. "Terrific guy," Mr Trump, who was Epstein's neighbour in both Florida and New York, said in an early-2000s profile of the financier. "He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side." Just last week, Mr Trump gave Mr Musk a glowing send-off as he left his cost-cutting role at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But their relationship imploded within days as Mr Musk described as an "abomination" a spending bill that, if passed by Congress, could define the president's second term in office. Mr Trump hit back in an Oval Office diatribe and from there the row escalated, leaving Washington and riveted social media users alike stunned by the blistering break-up between the world's richest person and the world's most powerful. With real political and economic risks to their row, both men appeared to inch back from the brink of all-out war on Friday, but the White House denied reports the pair were scheduled to speak on the phone.
