‘Explosion': Terrifying incident on US street

News.com.au18-05-2025
A car explosion near a fertility clinic in California has been described as an 'intentional act of violence' by police, which killed one person and severely damaged buildings.
Police are now investigating the Saturday morning incident, which occurred not far from downtown Palm Springs, with the blast rocking the neighbourhood including several businesses.
The car may have been parked outside American Reproductive Centers, Mayor Ron DeHarte told The New York Post.
'We're still trying to determine a cause,' Mr DeHarte said. 'The police and fire are down there right now. First, we heard it might be a helicopter crash or a gas leak but that's been ruled out. We should know pretty quickly what it was. There was quite a bit of damage to surrounding buildings as well.'
Palm Springs Fire Chief Paul Alvarado said the 'blast appears to be an intentional act of violence'.
'The blast field extends for blocks with several buildings damaged, some severely,' he said.
The fertility clinic confirmed no one from their facility was harmed, but that one person was killed and several were injured.
'I really have no clue what happened,' said Dr Maher Abdallah, who runs the clinic. 'Thank God today happened to be a day that we have no patients.'
Embryos stored at the facility were also unharmed, according to the clinic.
'We are heavily conducting a complete safety inspection and have confirmed that our operations and sensitive medical areas were not impacted by the blast,' the fertility clinic told the BBC.
American Reproductive Centers is described as Coachella Valley's first and only full-service fertility centre and IVF lab, according to its website and has been operating since 2006.
A number of law enforcement bodies have descended on the scene including investigators from the FBI, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would also help assess what happened.
Palm Springs police confirmed the death but the identity of the victim is not yet known, while they are considering all possibilities including whether it was an act of terrorism.
The FBI 'will be investigating whether this was an intentional act,' US Attorney Bill Essayli of the Central District of California wrote on X.
President Donald Trump's Attorney General Pam Bondi described the incident as 'unforgivable' and said federal agents were working to determine exactly what had happened.
'But let me be clear: the Trump administration understands that women and mothers are the heartbeat of America. Violence against a fertility clinic is unforgivable,' she said in a statement on social media.
One witness Claudio Chavez, who has a custom upholstery shop nearby told The Post it 'felt like an explosion' when the terrifying incident unfolded.
'It was so loud it felt like it shook my entire core,' he said.
'I was inside my business waiting for a client. I was sitting in my chair and it was like suddenly, like a bomb went off.
'Inside I just saw pieces of debris fall from the ceiling. Walked outside and saw my front window had totally shattered.'
He added there was a large amount of smoke too.
'Half of one building seemed to have been blown off,' he noted.
Aerial footage showed a burnt-out car in a parking lot, while the fertility's clinic's building roof hqe been caved in, with debris blown out widely across the street and bricks scattered everywhere.
Restaurant manager Rhino Williams, 47, was a block away when he heard the explosion and sprinted to the scene. He was forced to cover his nose with his shirt as he smelled burning plastic and rubber, he told the Associated Press.
Nima Tabrizi, 37, was also nearby inside a cannabis shop when he felt a massive explosion, describing a devastating scene afterwards.
'The building just shook, and we go outside and there's massive cloud smoke,' Tabrizi said. 'Crazy explosion. It felt like a bomb went off. … We went up to the scene, and we saw human remains.'

Three killed after mass shooting at New York City restaurant

Three people have been killed and eight others wounded inside a New York City restaurant as police frantically hunt for the gunman, who remains at large. Police officers responded to calls of a person opening fire inside Taste of the City Lounge in Brooklyn at 3:30am according to the New York Post. Those killed were identified as three men, who were 27, 35, and an unknown age. Multiple individuals were taken to local hospitals in the area. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered several people suffering from gunshot wounds inside the location. The suspect is yet to be found and the NYPD do not yet have a description of them. At least 36 shell casings were recovered. 'We have the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims seven months into the year we've seen on record in the city of New York,' NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. 'Something like this is, of course, thank god, an anomaly and it's a terrible thing that's happened this morning.' The shocking news come after a teenage suspect was arrested after three people were also wounded in an unrelated Times Square shooting earlier this week. Police have not yet confirm if there were any casualties or the exact number of people wounded in the shooting. NYPD personnel stood inside the business near a pool of blood and broken glass, according to video posted on X. Taste of the City Lounge serves American and Caribbean plates with a full bar, hookah, and DJs. The business, which opened in 2022, is located less than a half mile from the historic Brooklyn Museum and closed at 3am on Sunday local time.

Victim's girlfriend among nine teens arrested in 16-year-old's beach town murder

Nine South Carolina teenagers were arrested in the June shooting death of a 16-year-old who authorities say was involved in an argument 'over a girl' with his alleged shooter, according to local reports. The victim's 17-year-old girlfriend is among the suspects. Florence County Sheriff's department found Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina, dead with multiple gunshot wounds on June 24, authorities said previously. He was found about 70km west of Myrtle Beach. The following day, they arrested Devan Scott Raper, a 19-year-old from Conway, who allegedly fatally shot Wright after an argument. At least one teen involved reportedly recorded the slaying on video. And deputies continued to announce new arrests for weeks as the investigation dug deeper. 'All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,' Wright's mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital. 'I don't even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.' Now, an entire group of teens, many of them juveniles, are facing charges, some for allegedly setting Wright up and bringing Raper to the victim's location, knowing he was armed, according to authorities. One of the suspects was Wright's girlfriend, Gianna Kistenmacher, a Myrtle Beach 17-year-old, his mother said. Kistenmacher was charged with being an accessory before the fact for allegedly bringing Raper to the crime scene knowing he was both armed and likely to kill her boyfriend, according to a press release from the police department's office. Lawyers confirmed that nine teens had been charged but declined to comment further to Fox News, citing the ongoing investigation. 'They were complicit in bringing the armed co-defendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,' Maj. Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff's Office told local media, WBTW-TV, which is based in Florence, South Carolina. 'They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.' He told the Post and Courier separately that, under state law, all five are charged as adults. Prosecutors filed additional murder charges against three more Myrtle Beach-area teens, identified as 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns, according to WBTW. 'The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that's the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,' Nunn told the station. Sheriff T.J. Joye told the station separately that the fatal shooting appeared to have stemmed from an argument and apparent romantic rivalry. 'They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,' he reportedly said. 'The sad thing is, you got a 16-year-old that lost his life. You've got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?' Raper faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and is being held without bond. Kendall is also being held without bond. Belviso and Kearns each posted AU$30,000 surety bonds last week and have been released pending a trial.

Scott Wolf breaks silence on divorce, slams estranged wife ‘disturbing, false' abuse claims

Scott Wolf is accusing his estranged wife, Kelley Wolf, of conspiring to make 'disturbing, false' claims about him amid their messy divorce battle. The Party of Five star broke his silence on his split from the former Real World star, saying his ex conspired a plan to accuse him of 'psychological abuse, child abuse, child endangerment, stealing with passports.' While he previously chose to keep this 'difficult' time in his family's lives 'private,' he told People in a statement published on Saturday that he's now speaking up to protect 'the well being of (his) children.' 'I am now choosing to come forward and share that she has described to me her plans to 'make claims' about me, although she also admitted, 'I do not believe they're true,' in order to gain an advantage in what she sees as a 'battle' in court, and in the court of public opinion,' Wolf said. 'In order to protect my kids, I am providing the text messages she sent to me where she describes this plan, so there are no questions about her intentions, or the malicious intent behind her false allegations made and/or planned for the future.' The outlet went on to report that Kelley, 48, alleged in the messages that she 'was advised to make claims that are possible, even though I do not believe they're true nor would I ever say them to anyone'. 'When you accused me of all the things you put in the restraining order, you made me into a villain. The only way I can fight back is to produce claims that are either the same as yours or greater,' she continued. She also detailed that her aim was to 'create more urgency to get the kids back. Or at least get back joint custody'. Kelley ultimately shared her allegations against Wolf on a phone call with police on June 26, according to the outlet. 'Although her claims are completely baseless and incredibly dangerous, the worst part is that they are traumatic for our children,' the 57-year-old continued in his message. 'I hope that anyone who might speak publicly or report on such things, will consider this before spreading any further information from a clearly unreliable and completely compromised source.' He closed, asking for 'privacy and respect for our family' and thanked 'all those who have shown their love and support'. A representative for Kelley did not immediately respond to Page Six's request for comment. As some may recall, Kelley was shockingly detained and hospitalised after police were called to the Wolf family's Park City, Utah, home in June after a reported 'family fight'. An audio recording of the 911 call showed an unidentified woman claiming she was 'terrified' and 'needed help' after getting into an altercation with her brother-in-law and 16-year-old son. At the time, someone at the scene also mentioned an alleged 'past-occurred assault' choking incident that purportedly took place at their home in March. The scene transpired shortly after Scott filed for divorce on June 10. After his filing, Kelley later made another bombshell claim on social media that she was 'held against her will' by her former friends while she was 'trying to file for divorce.' Later that month, Scott was granted sole custody of their three children — Jackson, 16, Miller, 12, and Lucy, 11 — and a temporary restraining order against his estranged wife which he later dropped after they reached a new temporary agreement detailing custody, finances and communication.
