Giants rally again to beat lowly Rockies 10-7 for 7th straight win

DENVER (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski's two-run double in the eighth inning keyed another San Francisco rally, and the Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 10-7 on Wednesday night for their seventh straight victory.
Willy Adames homered and drove in three early runs for the Giants, but they trailed 6-3 entering the eighth before coming back against reliever Tyler Kinley (0-3).
Adames, Heliot Ramos and Dominic Smith singled to load the bases with one out, and Casey Schmitt walked to bring in a run. Yastrzemski then lined a double off the right-center wall to tie it.
Tyler Fitzgerald laid down a bunt against Zach Agnos, and Schmitt slid around the tag of catcher Hunter Goodman with the go-ahead run. Schmitt was initially ruled out but the call was overturned following a replay review.
San Francisco added three insurance runs in the ninth on Wilmer Flores' sacrifice fly, and RBI singles by Schmitt and Yastrzemski.
Goodman hit his 11th homer in the bottom half and the Rockies had two runners on when Orlando Arcia grounded back to closer Camilo Doval for the final out.
Tristan Beck (1-0) tossed three innings of relief for the win.

Brian Daboll makes change to Giants' practice routine on Russell Wilson's suggestion
There are tweaks every year to the offseason workout program, the organized team activity practices and the training camp regimen. This spring, the Giants are going with an increased number of 7-on-7 reps. Head coach Brian Daboll added this in after new quarterback Russell Wilson made the suggestion. 'That's something that Russell feels really good about,' Daboll said Thursday. 'We've added some competitive periods where they have to play the situations out. Not that we didn't do that, but we've placed a little bit more emphasis on it. And not just a third-down situation, but maybe a quarter in a game, time left, score. We've done pretty much, I'd say every day we've done a little bit of that.' This is yet another offensive system for Wilson — the Giants are his fourth team in the past five years — and the more he gets to work in passing drills with defenders on the field, the better for him to speed up the learning process. They're the ones that are touching the ball on every play,' Daboll said. The Giants face the Jets on Aug. 16 in their annual preseason matchup. It was good to sit down and kind of iron through some of the things that we wanted to get done, logistics of it. 'We thought that would be good for both teams. Kind of traveling a little bit, good for the fan base. So, it was really easy to work with A.G., and those are competitive days and good for the team.' Tigers lefty Skubal laments 2 walks in otherwise impressive 4-1 win over Orioles
Associated Press BALTIMORE (AP) — Seven shutout innings. Only three hits allowed, along with two measly walks. Almost every pitcher in the big leagues would be delighted with those results. Not Detroit Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal, who wasn't fully satisfied with his performance in a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. 'I was kind of fighting myself early, and as the game wore on, I felt like I got better,' Skubal said. 'I'm probably more proud of grinding it out than when you're on early.' On a hot, humid night at Camden Yards, the 2024 AL Cy Young Award winner looked rather ordinary in the first inning. Baltimore's leadoff hitter, Jordan Westburg, whacked a drive to right that was caught by leaping Kerry Carpenter at the wall. Two batters later, Gunnar Henderson singled. Skubal then walked Coby Mayo in the second inning and Ramon Laureano in the seventh. The two free passes were the most he'd allowed since April 2. 'During my next bullpen," Skubal said with a wry smile, "I'll go work on my command.' When you're almost always sharp and that overpowering, it's difficult tough to cope when things don't go perfectly. Skubal (7-2) threw 98 pitches, 74 in the strike zone, but those 24 other pitches caught his attention. 'I just think my misses were kind of bigger than they usually are,' he said. Tigers manager AJ Hinch was impressed with the results, but acknowledged that Skubal wasn't quite as impressive as usual. 'He didn't quite have the command he normally has,' Hinch said. 'That doesn't mean he had bad command tonight. It just means it was sort of not perfection. If that's your off day and it's seven scoreless, that's pretty good pitching.' With his sixth scoreless start of the year, Skubal lowered his ERA to 1.99. Yet, he was off his game just enough to draw a good-natured quip from his manager.
