What really sets Gyomei apart isn't just his raw power. It's his
tragic backstory
. His life might have been one of great tragedy and sorrow loss, as he struggled with the burden of this great pain and loss.
Gyomei's childhood was full of pain and loss
Gyomei was born to the Himejima clan on Mount Hinode in the late 1800s or early 1900s (probably the Meiji or Taisho era in Japan). His misfortune started from the moment of his birth. His mother died in childbirth and his father died a few years later due to disease, rendering him an orphan.
Gyomei went blind at a young age after suffering from a high fever. Although he was blind, he created an extraordinary ability to hear and sense the world around him, giving him the opportunity to create his own unique understanding of the world.
Instead of being embraced, those in his village distrusted and feared him, branding him a liar because a blind boy couldn't possibly do what he was doing. Sadly, this resulted in Gyomei being ostracized by his own community, made to live an isolated existence.
A monk who cared for orphans—and paid a terrible price
As an adult, Gyomei became a monk and cared for nine orphaned children in a modest temple. Though he abandoned every comfort and luxury, he often went without food himself in order to feed the children. As long as he raised them, he found peace and purpose, convincing himself that he had at last found a new family.
One night, fortune ran out. In the area where the temple was located, demon hordes frequently attacked, so Gyomei lit Wisteria Incense, which repelled demons. As punishment for not using the restroom, he would make them walk naked through the streets.
Unfortunately, one child disobeyed the rule, ventured outdoors, and encountered a demon. To prove his loyalty, the demon offered to free the boy from death if he allowed him to enter the temple. The boy, terrified that he might die, consented—and the demon came in.
Later that night, seven of those nine children died. Gyomei faced the demon with his bare arms, shielding the final child, Sayo, until morning came. He conquered the demon, but his hell was just beginning.
Betrayed and jailed: Gyomei was accused of murder
After the battle, villagers came and discovered the slain bodies of the boys. Without a clear perpetrator, the cops had not arrested anyone. The sole witness, Sayo, was traumatized. When her mom tried to find out what had occurred, she screamed, 'That man's a monster! He killed them all!'—this wasn't her intention, since she meant the demon and not Gyomei.
The villagers were confused and accused Gyomei of committing the murders himself. With no demon corpse to follow up (demon bodies disintegrate in daylight), Gyomei was captured and cast into prison, mourning and shattered.
He likely would have been put to death had it not been for Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the head of the Demon Slayer Corps, who sensed Gyomei's purity of spirit and brought him into the organization.
From monk to warrior: How Gyomei became the Stone Hashira
Having nothing to lose, Gyomei trained like a man possessed and went on to serve in the Demon Slayer Corps. Even when he crossed the border into blindness, Sakonji displayed remarkable prowess, ultimately achieving the rank of Stone Hashira—one of the most elite fighters opposing demons.
In battle, he wields a huge spiked flail and axe, using his advanced senses to identify foes all around him. Behind his dark, brooding exterior is a man tortured by loss, who channels that loss into his ongoing war on crime.
Why Gyomei's story stands out in Demon Slayer
Many characters in Demon Slayer have tragic pasts, but Gyomei's might be the most painful. He:
