Racial slurs and removed contestants: Love Island USA controversies explained

Independent6 days ago
Love Island USA season seven has been marked by controversy, with two contestants quietly removed due to resurfaced problematic content.
Yulissa Escobar was the first to exit after old podcast clips emerged showing her using a racial slur, which she later acknowledged and apologized for.
Cierra Ortega subsequently left the villa on Sunday's episode, following uproar over an old Instagram post containing a derogatory term for Chinese people.
The show's narrator briefly announced their departures without detailing the reasons, though Cierra's parents issued a statement requesting compassion amidst online backlash.
A third contestant, Huda Mustafa, is now facing similar scrutiny over an old TikTok video where she is debated to have lip-synced a racial slur.

Enzo Fernandez's partner leads Chelsea WAGs in flocking to the US to cheer on their partners in Club World Cup final as they take in the New York sights before kick off

Chelsea WAGs have descended on New York as their partners prepare for this evening's Club World Cup final. The Blues jetted off to the USA last month to take part in the inaugural edition of FIFA's premier club tournament since it was revamped to include 32 teams. Since then, Enzo Maresca 's side have progressed through the group stages and subsequently defeated the likes of Benfica, Palmeiras and Fluminense to book their place in the final. Their opponents at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday are a PSG side awash with confidence after entering the tournament just one month after being crowned Champions League winners for the first time in their history. Luis Enrique's side have been utterly dominant throughout the Club World Cup, and have conceded just once in their run to the final. Ahead of the landmark clash, a number of Chelsea stars have been joined by their partners as they have taken in the sights and enjoyed some precious downtime between games in the United States. It is understood that many of the group flew out once Chelsea reached the knockout stages as the club held a team bonding BBQ at their Miami base. Since then, a number of the WAGs, including Enzo Fernandez's girlfriend Valentina Cervantes have remained with the group as they moved on to New York to prepare for Sunday's final. On Saturday Cervantes shared a snap of herself watching a Blues training session as Maresca put his finishing touches on the game plan for the clash with Les Parisiens. Meanwhile, the partners of Pedro Neto, Marc Cucurella and Filip Jorgensen took to the streets of the Big Apple to do some sightseeing. Neto's girlfriend, Carolina Cunha e Silva, even donned a baseball jersey adorned with the Portuguese foward's name as the Blues defeated Fluminense. Cole Palmer also took in some of the famous sights, with the England international pictured in full Blues kit atop the famous Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan. Reports suggest that Maresca has offered his players a high degree of freedom throughout the competition. Maintaining professionalism has remained an imperative, but the players have been entrusted to enjoy some downtime following an arduous campaign. In addition, the club are said to have brought in FA staff to organise the team's camp including accommodation and activities for the players' families. Meanwhile Cole Palmer ascended the city's iconic Rockefeller Center for a photoshoot Speaking ahead of the clash with PSG, Maresca revealed he intends on treating the upcoming fixture 'like a chess match' and called Luis Enrique's side, 'the best team in the world'. 'I love to play chess and watch chess,' Maresca explained. 'I feel football is like a game of chess and when the rival makes a move, you have to counteract it and I think this will be like a chess game. 'They [PSG] are a top team in Europe and the world, maybe the best in the world, but every game is different and we will try to do a good game. 'For sure it will be difficult, but all games are difficult. Fluminense beat Inter and they reached the Champions League final; Al Hilal beat Manchester City. 'Botafogo beat PSG in this competition and did a very good job, but our style is different to Botafogo. 'PSG is best team in world and they have showed that in this tournament, showed it in France and in the Champions League. Of course it'll be a difficult game for us, but we are preparing ourselves in best way possible.

Scrubs returning to screens with original cast 15 years later... and the stars all look VERY different

The popular medical sitcom Scrubs is coming back to television with its original cast, but 15 years since the final season, the stars of the show looks very different now. ABC - which aired the show's last two seasons - announced earlier this week that the beloved show was getting a reboot, per CNN. The new series will be broadcast in 2025-2026, according to the outlet. Fan-favorite cast members Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison will all be returning for the revival. Amidst the exciting news, FEMAIL has taken a look into just how much the original Scrubs cast has changed over the last decade and a half. Zach, 50, who played the lovable John Michael 'J.D.' Dorian has continued acting and directing. He starred in and directed the critically acclaimed indie hit Garden State, and more recently appeared in the TV show Shrinking, alongside Jason Segel and Harrison Ford. He also directed A Good Person in 2023, which starred Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman. According to Deadline, the negotiations to talk Zach into returning had some major hiccups along the way. One sticking point was the actor and filmmaker's wish not to shoot the reboot in Vancouver, Canada, as was being proposed, presumably as a cost-cutting measure. However, Zach reportedly insisted on keeping the series in Los Angeles. After Scrubs, Sarah, 48, best known as Dr. Elliot Reid, went on to star in How I Met Your Mother and lent her voice to the animated show Rick and Morty. She most recently co-led the Netflix drama Firefly Lane alongside fellow TV doctor, Katherine Heigl. J.D.'s hilarious best friend, Turk, was played by Donald, 51. The actor has remained a fan favorite with roles in The Exes and Emergence. He also voiced characters in Star Wars Resistance and co-hosted the hit Fake Doctors, Real Friends podcast with Zach, revisiting their Scrubs days. More of the original cast are expected to return; however, it has not been revealed who else we can expect to see again. Scrubs director Bill Lawrence told CNN: 'Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together.' Writer Tim Hobert and director Aseem Batra will be executive producers and showrunners on the new season, per Variety. Bill will be executive producing via Doozer Productions along with Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer. The three main cast members - Zach, Sarah, and Donald - are also executive producers in addition to starring. Scrubs had a nine-season run from 2001 to 2010 and told the story of J.D., a young doctor working at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital. His best friend from college, Turk, played by Donald, and his on-off love interest Elliot, portrayed by Sarah, are fellow doctors at the hospital. In the reboot, 'JD and Turk scrub together for the first time in a long time,' according to the synopsis shared with CNN. 'Medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart, and some surprises along the way.' Bill has been teasing a reboot of the popular show for years. 'We're definitely going to do it, just because we've all been enjoying hanging out,' he told LadBible in August 2024. 'I think we'll figure it out in the next six months or so, what we want to do.'

Brenda, 95, and her soft toys become unlikely stars on TikTok

The anger and polarisation often on display on social media have made it a stressful place to venture for many people, wary of its unpredictable pile-ons and bile-filled responses. Yet a 95-year-old Cheshire woman and her soft toy collection have become the unlikely stars of a trend to encourage kindness in the comments. Brenda Allen said she had been flabbergasted by the response to her recent TikTok videos, in which she talks about her quirky Jellycat figures. Encouraged by a staff member at her care home, she began by showing viewers a hat-wearing avocado named Florence. Her haul also features a cuddly pot plant and a squashy, smiling pain au chocolat. Her breakthrough video showed a flair for comedy, ending with her observation that her mushroom teddy was 'a very fun guy'. Her videos have now amassed more than 2m views on the site, as well as thousands of comments from people across the world asking if they can adopt her as their social media grandma and calling her a national treasure. She has since been sent additions to her collection from Jellycat and John Lewis - and her videos have been reposted by Love Island contestants. The only negativity has come from her budgie, Toto, who isn't too keen on her cuddly blue tit and robin. '[The avocado] was my only one for a long time, then, gradually, some people have given me more of them,' Brenda said. 'But all of a sudden, after the media thing, I was inundated with people ringing me and wanting to send me toys and everything. It was quite incredible. 'One of the girls asked me to do a video. I didn't know what it was for, really. She just said would I do a little video for her about jelly cats? So I said yes, and it's gone from there. It's gone mad. I've had some lovely messages. Everyone thinks I have a nice voice, apparently.' One of her Majesticare care home's staff members posted the first video. It referenced the recent 'you better be nice in the comments' trend, which has gained momentum as users search for more wholesome content on their timelines. It began in the US, where creator @yearningyardis posted a video of her boyfriend talking about his pot plants. She tells viewers – in a comically threatening way – that they better 'say something nice' about him. That prompted others to make videos about the often eccentric hobbies of their friends and families. One even features a collection of tractor manuals. Celebrities including Ant and Dec have also become involved. Their video features Dec showing off Ant's artwork, menacingly ordering commenters to be kind. Brenda's daughter, Julie, said the family had been 'blown away' by her newfound fame. 'We don't quite understand it, but it's amazing and it's lovely,' she said. 'What has blown me away is how lovely everybody has been. I don't think I've ever seen anything where all the comments are positive.' Care home residents venturing to the local garden centre have already been asked whether they know Brenda, as word of her notoriety has spread. She is now planning to auction her Jellycat toys and donate the proceeds to a local children's hospice. Understandably, however, Brenda is content with only a brief moment of internet fame. 'I don't want to keep it on too long,' she said. 'I'm 95, you know.'
