Cole Palmer steps up in Chelsea's hour of need and wins Conference League final

Daily Mirror28-05-2025

REAL BETIS 1-4 CHELSEA: Cole Palmer's impact was unquestionable as the Blues completed the set in Europe after coming from behind to claim an historic win in Wroclaw
It is in difficult moments when the best players prove their quality. For so much of this match, it was all about one of football's European greats.
And yet, ultimately, it was Cole Palmer who stepped up to steal the show and prove his worth as he wrote another chapter in Chelsea 's glorious history. Palmer turned the game on its head with a magical intervention to turn the game completely on its head with two wonderful assists in five second half minutes for Enzo Fernandez and then Nicolas Jackson.

Up until then, Real Betis captain Isco, 33, the five-time Champions League winner, had dominated and run the game. But it was Palmer who had seen enough, battled and took the game by the scruff of its neck.

From 1-0 down at half time, Chelsea overwhelmed Real Betis to win the Conference League and become the first team to complete a full set of major European trophies. It is their ninth major European trophy and the first under co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali who are finally beginning to see their vast investment begin to pay off.
It also felt like vindication for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca who, after spending the week taking post shots at his critics, is also delivering. Maresca is a hard guy to love, the Chelsea fans are still not sure and yet he has now clinched Champions League football and a European trophy in the space of four days.
The Chelsea hierarchy were all there on the pitch celebrating another trophy but they will know that Palmer is their jewel in the crown. When Palmer plays, Chelsea play. When Palmer is off the boil, Chelsea struggle. It really is that simple. But this was a night when Palmer saw the chance of glory slipping away - and he just seized the moment.

That is what quality players are all about. The Conference League trophy is by no means the biggest or the best. But winning is infectious. It has served Chelsea well for 20 years and now this generation have their hands on their first piece of silverware in four years. No wonder the Chelsea fans were chanting: 'We've won it all' by the end with their typical arrogance.
They were outnumbered in the stadium by the Real Betis fans who had come with the dream of winning their first major European trophy. And for a while, it looked possible.

It was Malo Gusto who gave the ball away, Isco bought himself time and space before teeing up Abde Ezzalzouli who controlled the ball with his right foot before burying it past Filip Jorgensen with a left foot shot into the bottom corner.
It was all Real Betis before Maresca hauled off Gusto at half time and brought on Reece James. The tide began to turn. First, Palmer's wonderful, teasing deep cross found Fernandez who ghosted onto the ball before glancing a perfect header into the bottom corner.

Palmer was not done yet. You could see he was now in the mood. He jinked, teased and dribbled his way down the right and then put over a near post cross and Jackson deflected it into the net off his chest. It did not matter. They all count.
Chelsea substitute Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall helped set up Jadon Sancho to smash home a third and yet still the Blues were not finished in what rapidly turned into a demolition job. It could be Sancho's last game for the club - and what a way to go.
Moises Caicedo, Chelsea's midfield kingpin and best player this season, smashed home a fourth to leave the fans in blue behind the goal celebrating yet more European success. Trophies and success are often infectious and Maresca has helped Chelsea get the winning bug back again.

PSG president explains strict transfer rule Luis Enrique says they must follow

Luis Enrique has changed the way that Paris Saint-Germain approach transfers, with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi explaining how they now conduct business under the Spanish manager Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has explained the rule Luis Enrique has enforced since joining the club that helped them win the Champions League. PSG claimed their maiden title in the competition by destroying Inter Milan 5-0 on May 31 – and a great deal of the credit went to manager Enrique. The French giants had faltered in Europe's premier club competition in previous years, but triumphed with a team packed full of young guns. Their new look under Enrique was highlighted by Desire Doue – the 20-year-old attacker who scored twice in the final. ‌ He was signed from Rennes for €50million (£42m) in August 2024 to form a part of the young spine of Enrique's side. PSG also signed Joao Neves (19), William Pacho (22) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (24) during the 2024/25 season, all of whom started the thrashing of Inter. ‌ Al-Khelaifi says that focus on youth will continue while Enrique remains the manager. "He is the best coach to develop young players,' he told Qatari broadcaster Al-Kass. 'He likes young players. For example, buying a 28 or 27-year-old player is impossible for him, forbidden, he absolutely does not want it. 'He likes all players who are 21 or 22 years old. Have you noticed the latest players we have recruited? The oldest is 23 or 24, no more. "Luis Enrique likes a fighting spirit, he likes a player who gives his all, who runs a lot on the pitch, who is generous in his effort. How do we work? [Sporting director] Luis Campos has to present the player to the coach. The coach has to study how he plays, his value, his price and other aspects. 'There has to be an agreement, an agreement between everyone, even if each has their role. For everything that concerns scouting, it is Luis Enrique who has to approve the player. He has to be convinced that the player fits into his future project. Then, we, the management, also give our approval.' HAVE YOUR SAY! Can PSG sustain their form next season? Comment below. ‌ Al-Khelaifi also used the interview to fire shots at former PSG striker Kylian Mbappe, who left for Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer, only to end his debut season trophyless. PSG won the treble without him, with Enrique claiming the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de France and the Champions League to give his president ammunition. "It's easier to score goals in La Liga than in Ligue 1," Al-Khelaifi said. "Luis Enrique proudly represented Ligue 1 and defended it against Premier League fans who called it the Farmers' League. "We ended up beating Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal in the Champions League this season. Nobody thought we would win the title. We approached the Champions League step by step.' WSL revenues soar 34% despite drop in attendances

Revenues for Women's Super League (WSL) clubs soared by 34% during a record-breaking 2023-24 season, despite a drop in 12 teams in the WSL amassed a combined revenue of £65m, with each club generating more than £1m for the first from the Deloitte Sports Business Group found revenues grew from £48m in the 2022-23 season to £65m the following increase was driven by growth in commercial revenue, which increased by 53% from the previous season and now accounts for 40% of WSL clubs' total revenue. The revenue increases were largely driven by four clubs, with Arsenal (£15.3m), Chelsea (£11.5m), Manchester United (£9.2m) and Manchester City (£6.6m) accounting for two-thirds of the money made across the league. Matchday revenue increased, despite a 10% drop in attendances from the previous average league attendance dropped to 6,642. The drop, which followed England reaching the 2023 Women's World Cup final, contributed to pre-tax losses of £28m - up from £21m in 2022-23. However, Deloitte is forecasting revenues to top £100m across the league at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, helped by the upcoming Euros in Switzerland, "Women's football in England is evolving rapidly," said Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group."While challenges remain, it is clear there is potential for a passionate and engaged fanbase to drive the game's development."Capitalising on major international tournaments is important at specific points in time, but sustainable growth hinges on the domestic league's organic development."Bridge added that a "competitive balance is a key priority" if the WSL is to sustain long-term growth, with the gap widening between the top-earning clubs and the lowest-earning clubs in the league. Premier League clubs in the race to sign Newcastle duo with Magpies set for overhaul after securing Champions League qualification

Two Newcastle midfielders could be on their way out of St James' Park this summer amid interest from Premier League sides. The Magpies secured Champions League qualification on the final day of the Premier League season and will be keen to bolster their squad after struggling to deal with the demands of domestic and European football during the 2023-24 campaign. Having failed to break into Eddie Howe 's settled starting side, several first team stars are expected to depart the club this summer. Among them include the likes of Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock, who started eight and 11 matches in the Premier League respectively. Newly promoted side Leeds United are showing interest in Longstaff, who failed to register a goal or an assist in his 25 appearances in the top flight. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace are among the clubs keen on Willock, who fared slightly better with two assists in his 32 outings. Elsewhere, Leeds also admire Shea Charles of Southampton and have asked about Udinese defender Jaka Bijol. Charles made 44 appearances on loan in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday and has earned three senior international caps for Northern Ireland.
