India a key market, aiming to be core service provider: Malaysia Airlines
Ismail told news agency PTI that the Southeast Asian premium carrier will continue to operate as a foreign airline, steering clear of forming a joint venture or becoming part of India's domestic aviation sector.
Pointing to strong growth potential, Ismail told PTI, 'I see the urbanisation rate of India is 40 per cent, with middle-class income earners increasing and people having a comfortable, disposable income. A GDP of 6.5 per cent, with 1.4 billion people and nearly 100 airports. India is a really interesting market.'
India is currently Malaysia Airlines' top revenue generator, ahead of Australia and the UK. The airline operates 77 flights a week to and from 10 Indian destinations, a figure that the company aims to increase to 80 by December this year.
In the first half of 2025 alone, the airline transported 1.3 million passengers on Indian routes, representing 11 per cent of total revenue and 20 per cent of passenger volumes. Globally, with codeshare partners such as IndiGo, the Kuala Lumpur-based airline connects to 900 destinations in 170 territories.
He added that the airline wishes to capitalise on India's rapid economic progress, even though it is 'not an India-based airline,' and would like to be part of '10 or 15 per cent of that journey.'
Malaysia Airlines partners closely with IndiGo and also works with Air India, though it leverages the former more heavily.
This collaborative expansion mirrors a growing trend among foreign carriers in India. Malaysia Airlines' codeshare deal with IndiGo allows access to smaller markets, akin to how other airlines have historically used partnership models to penetrate India's aviation landscape, without engaging in joint ventures or direct domestic operations.
When asked about the possibility of entering India's domestic market, Ismail said, 'Why should I go to somebody's home and create havoc to a certain extent? I would rather visit you from time to time. And I would rather be friends with you rather than trying to build a house in your compound.'
The airline is focusing on boosting customer experience—through food, cabin services, and in-flight entertainment—while making selective aircraft purchases. 'You don't splash money to buy aeroplanes. You invest at the right place where it matters most, which is our customer,' he said.
No new Indian destinations are planned for 2025, though cities like Jaipur are under review for 2026. For now, Malaysia Airlines is prioritising seat capacity and frequency as key competitive products alongside onboard amenities.
Malaysia Airlines has already expanded its Indian footprint with new routes to Amritsar, Thiruvananthapuram, and Ahmedabad since November 2023, and it continues to modernise its fleet with Airbus A330neo aircraft and enabling smoother transits through value-add offerings like the 'Bonus Side Trip' programme.

British American Tobacco awaiting RBI approval to check out of ITC Hotels
Kolkata: British American Tobacco (BAT) is awaiting Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approval before it can sell its 15.29% shareholding in ITC Hotels . BAT is ITC's single largest shareholder. This is required as the ITC holding dates back to the early 1900s, BAT chief executive Tadeu Marroco told analysts on an earnings call last week. Unlocking Shares "Sometimes things take longer for us to be able to unlock those shares, get the right approvals in the right forums," he had said. "In this case, it's the central bank in India, in order to be able to transact." Once this comes through, BAT will embark on selling the holding as it will help the company return to the corridor of 2-2.5x adjusted net debt/ebitda by the end of 2026. "We intend to use the proceeds of the hotel to deleverage further the company," he said. The hotels business was demerged from ITC in January. Under the plan, ITC shareholders hold 60% of the unit with the rest owned directly by ITC. As a result, BAT owns 15.29% in ITC Hotels as a foreign direct investment, making it the largest public shareholder after ITC's promoter holding of 39.87%, as per the shareholding pattern at the end of June. As of June, ITC Hotels had a portfolio of over 200 hotels-143 operational and 58 in the pipeline. Analysts tracking the company said RBI's approval is required since this deal involves a foreign company selling its shares in an Indian company and taking the money out of India. They added that it could also have something to do with ITC being a tobacco company and FDI not being allowed in the segment. Marroco said BAT wants to divest the stake as it "strategically" doesn't want to be in the hotel business. Capital Flexibility BAT recently reduced its holding in ITC through two block deals after receiving RBI approval-in February last year (3.5%) and May this year (2.5%)-lowering its holding in the cigarette-to-FMCG major to 22.93% from 29%. Marroco said in the latest earnings release that BAT's continued strong cash conversion and the recent partial monetisation of its ITC stake has enhanced its capital flexibility. The company received 1.1 billion from the May stake sale, which increased its share buyback for 2025 from 0.9 billion to 1.1 billion. BAT declared that as part of the demerger accounting of ITC Hotels, ITC recognised the excess of the fair value over the carrying value of the hotels business as an adjusting item. BAT's share of this adjusted gain amounted to 333 million (net of tax), it said in the earnings release.

Following a series of service failures and last-minute changes, the district consumer commission in Ranga Reddy ordered a Delhi-based travel agency to pay 1.04 lakh in compensation for mental agony, out-of-pocket expenses, and litigation costs. The complainant, Aakula Venu Gopal, had booked a 10-night Char Dham Yatra tour package with the travel agency in April 2024, paying 90,000 in advance. However, just days before the journey, the agency abruptly cancelled the trip, citing a lack of hotel availability, and pressured him into accepting a Kashmir package instead. With no other viable option and fearing a substantial financial loss, Gopal reluctantly agreed. The ordeal worsened when Gopal, along with his elderly mother and young daughter, arrived in Delhi and travelled overnight to Katra. The hotel listed in their itinerary had no booking under their name. Stranded at 2am without mobile connectivity in Jammu & Kashmir, the family eventually managed to find alternative accommodation by 6am, well outside the promised package plan. Upon returning, Gopal approached the commission seeking a refund of 44,219 spent on food, alternative hotel bookings, and transport, along with 1 lakh as compensation. In its final order, the commission concluded that the agency had engaged in unfair trade practices. "Throughout the tour, the family faced considerable distress due to the negligent and unprofessional service of the agency. We are of the considered opinion that the agency committed a deficiency in service and caused great hardship during what was meant to be a leisure trip," the commission said. The commission directed the company to pay 44,219 towards incurred expenses, 50,000 for mental agony, and 10,000 as litigation costs within 45 days.
