Football fan nets £136k dream car and cash hours before team reaches play-off final
A Sunderland fan has netted a dream car and cash prize worth £136,000 - just hours before celebrating his team's dramatic play-off semi-final win.
Ian Heslop, from South Shields, won a £86,000 Range Rover D300 Dynamic SE in BOTB's weekly Dream Car Competition.
The 51-year-old couldn't contain his laughter when the BOTB team rolled up to his doorstep with his new set of wheels earlier in the week.
BOTB Ian Heslop (Image: BOTB) 'No way! I can't believe it,' he giggled. 'This is just fabulous! I've come close to winning a couple of times, but you never actually think it's going to happen to you. What an amazing surprise.'
The win came just hours before Ian and his son watched their beloved Sunderland beat Coventry in the Championship play-off semi-final, with a nail-biting 3-2 win on aggregate sealed in the dying seconds.
'It was an amazing day. I was shocked to win the car. It's not every day you win something like this.
'Then to win the football in such dramatic fashion was the icing on the cake. It's fair to say I was on cloud nine.
'It's one of the best experiences I've had in football, and it was even more special with my son being there.'
'I love the Range Rovers,' Ian said. 'They have such a great reputation, and I love the classy look of them and all the tech.'
Ian, who works as an estate planning consultant, got to sit in the driver's seat and start up the engine.
But the surprises didn't end there, as a £50,000 cash prize was also hiding in the boot.

Despite his love of the car, Ian said he was planning on taking the cash alternative as he and his family are moving house.
'It's a tough decision, but this is the right decision for us just now,' he said.
Looking ahead to the play-off final at Wembley on May 24, Ian has made a bold prediction - Sunderland to beat Sheffield United 2-1.

Stay inside warning after fire in derelict building
People were told to stay inside after a fire broke out at a derelict commercial building in Burnley. Eight fire crews were called to the incident, where they used a drone unit to tackle the fire, on Holmes Street at around 14:30 BST on Saturday, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) said. There are no reports of any injuries, but resident Rachel Maclean told the BBC that Aldi, next to the building, was evacuated. Expressing concern about the incident, Ms Maclean said: "There are kids in and out (of the derelict building) all the time and local homeless people do stay in there." Ms Maclean said that her family were advised to stay indoors. The cause of the fire is under investigation. In a video shared on social media, Liam Wilson, group manager for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We've worked tremendously hard over the afternoon, firstly, doing the firefighting operation but also working with partners to minimise the impact to the local community and the surrounding buildings and premises." He said they were "extremely grateful for the support of the community". A LFRS spokesperson said that, by 21:00 BST on Saturday, six fire crews and the aerial appliances remained. They said four crews remained on scene on Sunday, with Oxford Road and Holmes Street remaining closed to vehicles throughout the day. The number of migrants reaching the UK in small boats in a single day hits a 2025 high
LONDON (AP) — U.K. government figures Sunday showed that more than 1,100 migrants arrived in the country on Saturday in small boats from France across the English Channel, the highest number recorded on a single day so far this year. The latest Home Office figures show that 1,194 migrants arrived in 18 boats on Saturday in what were settled weather conditions, bringing the provisional annual total so far to 14,811. That's 42% higher than the same point last year, an increase that has piled pressure on the Labour government, which returned to power nearly a year ago partly on disillusionment with the previous Conservative administration 's efforts to get a grip on the the numbers making the crossing. Having ditched the Conservative government's plan to send migrants who arrived in the U.K. by unauthorized means to Rwanda, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his government would get control by smashing the gangs and the business models that sustain their smuggling operations. Since gaining power, Starmer's government has sought better intelligence-sharing internationally, enhanced enforcement operations in northern France and has adopted tougher rules in its immigration legislation. French police officers were seen watching Saturday as migrants boarded at a beach in Gravelines, between Calais and Dunkirk, and authorities were then pictured escorting the boats. French authorities said they rescued 184 people. 'Pretty shocking, those scenes yesterday," Defense Secretary John Healey told Sky News. He added that it is a 'really big problem' that French police are unable to intervene to intercept boats in shallow waters, adding that the U.K. is pressing for the French to put new rules into operation so they can intervene. 'They're not doing it, but, but for the first time for years … we've got the level of cooperation needed," he told Sky News. 'We've got the agreement that they will change the way they work, and our concentration now is to push them to get that into operation so they can intercept these smugglers and stop these people in the boats, not just on the shore.' Despite French and U.K. efforts, the cross-Channel route, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, remains a major smuggling corridor for people fleeing conflict or poverty. Many migrants favor the U.K. for reasons of language, family ties or perceived easier access to asylum and work. The Home Office says 36,816 people arrived in the UK on small boats in 2024, 25% more than in 2023 (29,437). The highest number of arrivals was in 2022, with 45,774.

Two people killed and hundreds arrested in France during Champions League win celebrations
French authorities say two fans died after celebrations around the country for Paris Saint-Germain's historic Champions League victory, European club football's biggest prize. A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the city of Dax during a PSG street party, according to the national police. And a man was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations, the interior minister's office said. The circumstances of both deaths are being investigated. French interior minister Bruno Retailleau commented in a post on social media on Saturday after the game: 'True PSG fans are getting excited about their team's magnificent performance. Meanwhile, barbarians have taken to the streets of Paris to commit crimes and provoke law enforcement … It is unbearable that it is not possible to party without fearing the savagery of a minority of thugs who respect nothing.'A police officer was accidentally hit by fireworks in northwest France and placed in an artificial coma because of grave eye injuries, the national police service said. The interior ministry said 18 police officers in Paris were injured, along with three elsewhere in France, as were 192 people celebrating in the streets. A total of 294 people were arrested by 2 am, though the celebrations were mostly peaceful apart from the descent into violence in some areas. Meanwhile, the Paris Saint-Germain squad is returning from Munich to the French capital on Sunday to continue celebrating with tens of thousands of the team's fans. They are set to arrive in Paris at 4 pm on the club's own Qatar Airways jet.
