How former LSU baseball star Paul Skenes fared in All-Star game start

USA Today2 days ago
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes made history on Tuesday, becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to start the All-Star game in each of his first two seasons.
The former LSU baseball star got two strikeouts in one inning against the American League. He got Gleyber Torres and Riley Greene to go down swinging, then induced a ground out from Aaron Judge to end the frame.
Skenes' 100.3 mph fastball to get Greene out is the fastest strikeout pitch by an All-Star game starter in the pitch-tracking era, which started in 2008. Had the National League held onto the lead for the entire game, Skenes was in line for the win.
The National League took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, then added four more five innings later. The American League tied the game at 6-6 by the top of the ninth, forcing a home run derby-style swing-off. The National League's trio of Kyle Stowers, Kyle Schwarber, and Pete Alonso prevailed, giving the side its second victory in three years.
Skenes is putting together a stellar season following his 2024 National League rookie of the year campaign. His 2.01 ERA leads the National League heading into the second half of the season. Through 121 innings, he has 131 strikeouts.

Terry Francona Provides Huge Injury Update On Reds Ace Hunter Greene

The Cincinnati Reds have been without their ace, Hunter Greene, for over a month now, yet they've managed to continue to contend in the loaded National League. Terry Francona's team is seemingly all-in this season, as seen by their bold decision to fast-track Chase Burns to the big leagues to win right now. But without Greene, this Reds team isn't the same. They lack an ace that can match up with the top pitchers in the league. Andrew Abbott has been incredible this season, but he would be even better as the No. 2 behind Greene. Earlier this month, Greene was supposed to make a rehab start but suffered a setback with his groin and back injury. But recently, the Reds' skipper revealed Greene was set to take a huge step toward his return to Cincinnati. CINCINNATI, OHIO - MAY 23: Hunter Greene #21 of the Cincinnati Reds looks on during a baseball game against the Chicago Cubs at Great American Ball Park on May 23, 2025 in Cincinnati, recently said that Green would begin his rehab assignment early next week with one start at the Arizona Complex League before heading to Triple-A, according to Red insider Charlie Goldsmith. It's likely the Reds will be cautious with the top pitcher in their organization, but this update should be a huge relief for Reds fans. Greene is gearing up for a return at the perfect time. The Reds will likely look to cautiously buy at the trade deadline. Pair that with Greene's return, and the Reds could quietly force themselves into the postseason picture in the NL. It's going to be an uphill battle for the Reds to crack into the postseason with all the talent on their side of the league, but having Greene back on the mound will give them a real chance to shock the baseball world. Yankees' Max Fried Reveals Expected Return Timeline From Blister Injury

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole went down with an elbow injury that would sideline him for the entire season, a lot of pressure was placed on the shoulder of offseason acquisition Max Fried. Fried has always been good in the big leagues, but he was never really the runaway ace with the Atlanta Braves. With the Yankees, Fried was forced to be the team's ace. Since being thrust into that role, Fried has been nothing short of incredible. In 20 starts and 122 innings, Fried has gone 11-3 with a 2.43 ERA. His 3.02 FIP, 1.00 WHIP and 17 pitching run value all indicate he's been just as dominant as his ERA suggests. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 15: Carlos Rodón #55, Aaron Judge #99 and Max Fried #54 of the New York Yankees look on before the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on July 15, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. More NewBut in his most recent start before the All-Star break, Fried began dealing with a blister injury. While an injury like this doesn't seem like much to the fans, it can completely destroy a pitcher's ability to hold, throw, spin and control a baseball. There's no way around it, especially since an injury like this could nag on for weeks. Shortly after the All-Star break, according to the Athletic's Chris Kirschner, Fried revealed that he's hopeful that he will pitch in the upcoming series against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees travel to Toronto for a three-game set from Monday to Wednesday. There aren't many options to treat a blister besides getting to the root of the issue, and that often takes time. It's likely a disappointing outcome for the fans to hear, but these blister injuries can nag on and cause a lot of issues. If the pitcher misses a few weeks as the blister heals, they're not able to throw and keep their arm in shape. That would lead to the pitcher needing to build his arm back up to game shape, which could take an additional week or two. The fact that Fried's hopeful to return next week should be quite a relief.
