Spain star Bonmati recovering well from meningitis, says coach Tome

The 4202-07-2025
AITANA BONMATI IS on the road to recovery from the viral meningitis scare which has kept her out of Spain's Euro 2025 opener against Portugal, coach Montse Tome said on Wednesday.
Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Bonmati was hospitalised last week after being struck with the illness, but is back training with the Spain squad ahead of the world champions' Group B debut in Bern on Thursday.
'Aitana is making good progress. Yesterday she did part of her training with the rehabilitation specialist, but she was working completely separately,' said Tome.
'Today she will do some work with the team, but we have to slow her down. Her health is paramount.'

Midfielder Bonmati is the biggest star of the women's game and her absence in the lead-up to the tournament is a major setback for Spain's hopes of winning their first European title.
Her Barcelona teammate and fellow double Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas will have extra responsibility on her shoulders in Spain's campaign in Switzerland.

Roy Keane makes bleak Manchester United prediction

The Premier League is back this weekend and one team that will be sure to grab headlines is Manchester United. The Red Devils come into this season off the back of what was by far their worst season since 1974 when they got relegated from the old Division 1. The 15th-place finish on top of losing the Europa League Final to Tottenham Hotspur meant United will go into this coming season without European football. Despite all the doom and gloom surrounding United, it looks like there are some signs for United fans to be optimistic the months ahead. New signings Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha of Manchester United pose for a photo. Pic: Ben Roberts – Danehouse/Getty Images Ruben Amorim has laid down a marker this summer, identifying the four players he wanted rid of in Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony and making sure the club brought in a new front three in the form of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo and Benjamin Sesko. That, on top of renovating their Carrington training ground, has given Manchester United fans a lot of hope that last season's misery is now behind them. Bruno Fernandes. Pic:One man that has been happy with their summer business is former United captain Roy Keane. Speaking on Stick to Football , Keane said he was pleased with United identifying their need for attackers. 'They brought in a few attacking players who know the Premier League at least. To me, over the past few years, they were bringing in too many players who were trying to get used to the pace of the Premier League, they weren't robust enough. Pic: The Overlap/ YouTube 'There's a few signings that make you go 'Yeah, it looks a bit better.'' Keane added that United's 'summer has not been too bad for United, but the proof starts at the weekend.' Despite some optimism from the 54-year-old, Keane was quick to downplay where United would finish in the league and said that he still believed they have a good bit to go. Roy Keane: Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile 'At best United for me, eighth or ninth, they still have a lot of problems, of course. Huge question marks… we will be here all day. They still have to sort out the goalkeeper situation and defensively. 'Don't be putting United in the bracket of Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. They are not in that conversation.' Well, they'll be talked about with Arsenal a lot this weekend as they host the Gunners at Old Trafford in their first Premier League game of the season. The game kicks off at 4:30pm this coming Sunday.

Waterford veteran Amond named July player of the month

Waterford FC forward Padraig Amond has been named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers Ireland Player of the Month for July. Carlow-born Amond may be one of the older winners of the prize but he is no stranger to collecting individual football awards. The 37 year-old, former Shamrock Rovers youths star, won four Ireland U21 caps and was voted Kildare County's Young Player of the Year before he moved cross-channel. He played extensively in the UK with Accrington Stanley, Morecambe, Grimsby Town, Hartlepool United, Exeter City and Woking but enjoyed his best spell at Newport County, making 162 appearances and scoring 41goals for the Welsh club. He joined Waterford last season and so far he has netted 26 goals in 61 appearances for the Suirsiders. Amond topped the nationwide poll on 43 points, eight ahead of last month's runner-up Dawson Devoy of Bohemians with Jad Hakiki of Sligo Rovers in third place. "I am loving my football with Waterford and every day it is exciting to come into training and work with a good group of players and a good management set up," said Amond. "It's a really good club to be around and I am loving my time. "I chalked up my 800th club career appearance recently but I want to play for as long as possible and as long as I am contributing to the team. "I feel I am doing well at the moment and I see no reason why I can't play for another few years up to my 40th birthday. "I have a plan in place for life after football. I have my coaching badges up to the 'A' licence but I also have a degree in coaching and management so I have options once I retire and something to fall back on." The Blues No 9 is looking forward to this weekend's Sports Direct Men's FAI Cup third-round clash away to Cork City at Turner's Cross and gives his team every chance of making the quarter-finals of the knock-out competition. "I think every Premier Division team left in the last 16 will fancy their chances especially with what's on offer and the possibility of European football at the end of it. "We have four all-Premier Division ties this weekend and anything can happen in Cup football so it's something we are looking at here in Waterford. "The FAI Cup is a far quicker route to European football than the league but, having said that, we are not treating Cork lightly for a moment."

‘All that comes into play' - Stephen Bradley's shootout prep theory explained

Stephen Bradley says his players are welcome to practice penalties ahead of tonight's crunch Euro tie - but that it's not part of his preparation for the visit of Ballkani. Shamrock Rovers are trailing 1-0 from the first-leg in Kosovo and have twice been involved in shootouts in European competition. They beat Finnish side Ilves 12-11 in a remarkable end to their 2020 Europa League clash, and lost 5-4 to Molde last February in a battle to reach the last-16 of the Conference League. There is a chance that they could go all the way to penalties again tonight, but asked if he had a policy of practicing for such an eventuality he replied: 'No, I don't. 'I've never been a believer in that. You can create a game situation in terms of that moment with the crowd. 'I could be the best penalty taker in the team, but on the day, I'm off. My mind is off. I'm not seeing the pass. I'm not playing the pass with that flow that you usually would. 'All that comes into play. I've been there. There will be players that will stay back and take some (in training), I'm sure, but it won't be as a collective. 'There might be someone who doesn't take them but feels really good tomorrow and is on it. Everything is just flowing. When you're in that flow state, it becomes a different thing. 'We won't, as a group, we won't practice.' Bradley added: 'This group, we know each other inside out and we know our angle is to go on winning the game tomorrow. In 90 minutes, if possible, if not, in extra time. And that's what we look to do. 'I just don't believe in… I understand why people practice. The more practice you get comfortable, but it's a completely different scenario on gameday.' Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .
