Holyoke Police recover firearm after car crashes into home
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A traffic stop turned into a dangerous chase early Saturday morning, ending with a car crashing into a home and the recovery of an illegal firearm, according to Holyoke Police.
Illegal fireworks set off in Holyoke Mall parking lot
According to police, at approximately 2:45 a.m. on February 15, officers patrolling Cabot Street observed a vehicle running a red light. When they attempted a traffic stop near Commercial Street, the driver initially complied but then sped away, prompting a chase.
The chase was later called off for safety reasons, but officers soon spotted the suspect vehicle again, this time after it had crashed into the porch of a home near the intersection of Northampton Street and Westfield Road.
Police say no one inside the home was hurt, and neither the driver nor the passenger were injured. However, during their investigation, Officers Joshua Rivera and Jose Millan discovered an illegal firearm inside the vehicle.
As a result, both the driver, a 17-year-old girl, and the passenger, 19-year-old Shaniquha Thomas of Holyoke, were placed under arrest.
Thomas faces multiple firearm-related charges, including:
Carrying a firearm without a license
Improper storage of a firearm
Possession of ammunition without an FID card
The 17-year-old driver will also face firearms-related charges in addition to motor vehicle violations under Massachusetts Chapter 90 laws. Due to her age, her name has not been released.
Holyoke Police have not disclosed further details about the firearm but continue to investigate the incident. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Holyoke Police Department.

ICE announces Milford high schooler update
BOSTON (WWLP) – The US Attorney's office and ICE officials held a press conference on Monday, providing updates on their activity in the Bay State, and on the recent arrest of a Milford high school junior. The update comes as ICE has ramped up their detainment efforts exponentially over the last several months, making headlines as nearly 1,500 known criminals and honors students alike are taken into custody. US Attorney Leah Foley says ICE is carrying out their duties, and threatened those who try to interfere with prosecution. 'These are defendants who didn't simply cross a border, they crossed a line and jeopardized the safety of Massachusetts communities,' said Foley. ICE officials were asked about the whereabouts of an 18-year-old Milford high schooler who was detained on the way to volleyball practice this weekend. They declined to disclose where he is being held, but clarified that the target of their investigation was the student's father, and while the student has no criminal record, he was detained for residing in the United States illegally. 'Like, I didn't say he was dangerous. I said he is in this country illegally. And we're not gonna walk away from anybody,' said ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons. Governor Healey sees the detainment of the Milford high schooler differently. She says despite her requests, ICE has not provided her with more information. 'Unless ICE has additional information that would substantiate that this individual had some criminal involvement, he should be released,' Healey said. ICE officials emphasized that they will be arresting all individuals who are in the country illegally that they come across while searching for specific people, regardless of any criminal activity. DHS targets sanctuary cities including Springfield and Holyoke
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – As the federal government continues to detain illegal immigrants, sanctuary jurisdictions are now being targeted. Last Thursday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security released a list of 500 counties, cities, and states that they claim are interfering with mass deportations. The department published the list, citing they were 'endangering Americans and law enforcement in order to protect violent criminal illegal aliens.' Operation Patriot nets 1,500 arrested by ICE in Massachusetts These places are referred to as sanctuary jurisdictions, or a place that limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities. While the list was posted on the Department of Homeland Security's website last Thursday, it was since taken down as of Sunday. Cities across the country on the list included San Diego, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia, but there were also four in western Massachusetts. 'In my mind, we are not a sanctuary city,' said Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. One of those cities was Springfield. 'We do not interfere with I.C.E., but we have the Welcome City Ordinance that says my officers cannot ask any type of status, immigration status,' said Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers. The city of Holyoke was also on the list. In a statement, Mayor Joshua Garcia said the city's executive order 'simply directs our police officers to follow the law and not act as federal immigration agents.' Two additional cities in western Massachusetts are publicly declared sanctuary jurisdictions: Amherst and Northampton. Federal officials have criticized sanctuary city policies, claiming local agencies are releasing criminals back into the communities. The DHS said the sanctuary jurisdiction list will be used to determine the termination of grants. 'I have already lost millions and millions of dollars in grants, this now possibly means we are going to lose even more money,' Mayor Sarno said. 'My first responsibility is to the residents and business community of the city of Springfield.' Since the webpage was taken down, it is uncertain what, if any, action will be taken against the sanctuary jurisdictions on the list. 22News will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
