He struggled to replicate the stunning impact of his first campaign in Spain, which led to criticism from sections of the Madrid media.
And former Real winger Victor Sanchez del Amo believes the England midfielder was frustrated on the field for much of the campaign, during which Real failed to win any silverware for the first time in four years.
Bellingham, 21, will hope to get back to his best at the Club World Cup, with his first game against Saudi side Al-Hilal in Miami tomorrow.
Sanchez del Amo, 49, told SunSport: 'I really saw a change in Bellingham in his second season.

'In the first season he was outstanding, playing in his natural position as a midfielder with a free role to move through the central corridor.
'But last season, he played many times as a left midfielder.
'He had a different tactical role and he wasn't happy there.
'Real had lost Toni Kroos and didn't replace his role in the build-up play. They struggled for balance between defence and attack.

"Bellingham realised that and tried to help the team by dropping his position, but this was also uncomfortable for him.
'You could see that his body language on the pitch was very different.

'In the first season he always showed a great fighting spirit, helping his team-mates, supporting everyone and leading on the pitch.
'But in this second season he had different behaviour. He spent a lot of time complaining, got more cards and picked fights with opponents.
'I felt he was not happy in his new role — and that showed.'
Bellingham has delayed shoulder surgery so he can play in the CWC.
Along with Al-Hilal, Real will face Mexican side Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg in the initial group phase.
And new manager Alonso, who has replaced Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti, will be under immediate pressure to mount a serious challenge in Fifa's lucrative revamped event.

Sanchez del Amo — who manages Slovenian champions Olimpija Ljubljana but has ambitions to coach in England — feels Alonso can boost Real's attacking threat by allowing Bellingham to play to his strengths.
He added: 'Last season Real signed Kylian Mbappe but it was difficult to find balance because he and Vini Junior like to occupy the same spaces.
'They are not natural strikers, so many times Real had nobody in the box. They would get into crossing positions but the box was empty.
'Bellingham can improve that. He has a huge capacity to score goals.
'His best position is very clear — he has to be an attacking midfielder, with freedom in the central corridor to join the second line in the box.
'I don't think we'll see him playing wide any more.'

'Same old, same old but Delap looks a good buy' - fans on CWC opener
We asked for your views on Chelsea's opening Club World Cup match against Los Angeles FC in are some of your comments:Thabiso: Same old problems - ponderous build-up, flimsy press and panicky defence. On the plus side, Liam Delap looks like the menace up front we have been crying out A bit lethargic but this was only a group game. Noni Madueke was poor, but Nicolas Jackson and Delap looked good, and Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto linked up well together. We need to improve as the tournament progresses but let's not forget this is also part of our pre-season, so rotation and resting will be part of the overall Same old, same old. Palmer carrying the rest of the average bunch. Delap looked good for the minutes he got, but still no spark of excitement for the fans. We need to up our game Chelsea were pretty good after they settled down. While every Chelsea fan wants them to win every game and fixture, Neto is showing how good he is and Palmer seems to be coming out of his shell. Things can only get better (we hope).Ron: We are still too slow and deliberate in our build-up from defence to attack. Still don't agree with our style of play but Delap looks like a good buy. He makes good runs off the ball, which help to open up well set up defences. Looking forward to seeing some more of the new youngsters, but feel we need another strong central defender and Loved the energy Delap brought to the game when he came on. Great movement and touch to put Enzo Fernandez in for his goal. Very excited about this signing!Gary: I thought we were very flat against a poor side. We still need a world-class forward and a goalkeeper just to get us closer to the top three, but will we address those positions?Nick: We were only troubled occasionally, when playing sloppily and losing concentration. Neto was the clear man of the match but Flamengo will be a tougher game for us on Friday.

'Amazing' Delap will score goals - Chelsea team-mates praise striker
Following his Chelsea debut in the 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC at the Club World Cup, Liam Delap's new team-mates have backed the £30m man to be a success at the Delap made an impressive cameo appearance from the bench in the second half, defender Levi Colwill said: "I've known Liam for a long time now, and I've played against him loads of times. Growing up, you know what sort of players are going to make it and he was always one of those."To have him in our team, to train against him, to see him score goals - which I know he will - I'm very excited."Much has been made of Delap taking on the number nine shirt at Stamford Bridge, but Colwill is not expecting him to feel the pressure."I know he wouldn't listen to that or read too much into it because he's a confident player. He's an amazing player, and we know he's going to score goals for Chelsea. That's the mentality we need from every player."Meanwhile, Tosin Adarabioyo added: "He's settled in very well. He's a good young lad and we know what qualities he brings."He's aggressive [when] pressing and an aggressive striker, making sure he's always there, setting the intensity. Hopefully he scores many goals for us."
