WSL: Manchester City sign German midfielder Sydney Lohmann on 4-year deal
The 25-year-old moves to City on the back of nine trophy-laden years at Bayern Munich, where she's firmly established herself as one of the finest midfielders in Europe. During her time in Bavaria, Lohmann was part of four separate title-winning sides, including helping Bayern to a domestic double in 2024/25.
Speaking about the move, Lohmann said, 'I have a really positive feeling here at Manchester City. I've always had the thought of playing abroad at some point in my career, and I just had the feeling that this year was the right time to do that.
'I'm really thankful for the time at Bayern Munich, and I'm happy that I gained those experiences, but I think always when you go somewhere else, a big step like that, it's always good for your personal growth."
A firmly established German international having first made her senior debut in 2018, the midfielder has so far represented her nation 39 times, scoring six goals.
Having helped Germany earn a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympic Games and reach the Euro 2022 final, she's set to once again represent her nation at Euro 2025, having been selected alongside new City team-mate, Rebecca Knaak. With four Bundesliga titles, a DFB-Pokal, and a German Super Cup to her name during nine full seasons at Bayern Munich, Sydney Lohmann's record speaks for itself.
Making her senior debut for the German giants as a 17-year-old, she'd established herself as a regular within two seasons and was integral to Bayern's first league title in five years in 2020/21. Lohmann's ten goals in 20 league appearances saw her finish as the Bundesliga's highest scoring midfielder that year. And our new recruit and her side never looked back from there.
A further three titles would follow over the next four years, including a domestic double in 2024/25, with the German international a key figure in each of those triumphs.
Manchester City Women's Director of Football Therese Sjogran added, 'We're really pleased to have been able to secure Sydney's signature and bring her winning form to the Club.
'She is no stranger to success and has more than proven her worth in both Germany and on the world stage.
'Sydney's calibre speaks for itself, and we believe she will be a fantastic addition to our squad here at City on and off the pitch over the next four years – in what is her first move away from home.'

Swimming-Chinese 12-year-old Yu reaches 200m individual medley semi-finals
July 27 (Reuters) - China's 12-year-old swimming sensation Yu Zidi will join Olympic champion Summer McIntosh in the semi-finals of the women's 200 metres individual medley after qualifying in the heats on her world championships debut in Singapore on Sunday. There was no stage fright for the schoolgirl from China's northern province of Hebei as she posted a time of two minutes and 11.90 seconds, a second off her personal best, to finish 15th in the heats. Yu made the swimming world sit up and take notice at national championships in Shenzhen in May by winning the 400 IM and 200 butterfly titles, as well as coming second in the 200 IM, all with qualifying times for Singapore. Faster than Canadian McIntosh at the same age, Yu's potential is enormous and her ability to compete with the world's best will be closely watched over the coming days. World record holder McIntosh is the overwhelming favourite to win the 200 IM, though she qualified second in the heats in 2:09.46 behind Australia's Tara Kinder. Sunday's evening session will feature a showdown between McIntosh and American great Katie Ledecky for the 400 freestyle gold. Twelve years after winning the first of her four 400 world titles at Barcelona, Ledecky qualified fastest for the final with a time of 4:01.04. McIntosh, the Olympic silver medallist last year, will go for her maiden 400 title after finishing fourth in the heats. The 18-year-old coasted to a time of 4:03.11, nearly 10 seconds adrift of her world record of 3:54.18 set at the recent Canadian trials. Erika Fairweather, the reigning 400 world champion, was a shock disqualification for a false start after a small movement on the block. She was one of several disappointments on day one's first session. With food poisoning having hit the United States team during their pre-meet camp in Thailand, Olympic champion Torri Huske failed to take her place in the women's 100 butterfly. Australia's Olympic silver medallist and former world champion Elijah Winnington, meanwhile, failed to qualify for the men's 400 freestyle final. It was compatriot and former world champion Sam Short taking top seed for the final instead. He will battle the German world record holder and Olympic champion Lukas Maertens for the gold later on Sunday. Olympic champions Australia and the United States will battle for the women's 4x100 freestyle relay gold in the evening session, while a new-look U.S. team topped qualifying for the men's 100 relay final. Australia and China are also expected to battle for the gold in the men's relay later on Sunday. (Reporting by Ian Ransom in Melbourne; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Nigeria beats Morocco to win record-extending 10th Women's AFCON title
Nigeria staged a remarkable fightback from two goals down to beat host Morocco 3-2 and win the Women's Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday. It was a record-extending 10th triumph for Nigeria, confirming its status as the most successful women's team in Africa. Esther Okoronkwo and Folashade Ijamilusi led the fight back at Rabat's Stade Olympique before substitute Jennifer Echegini swept home an 88th-minute winner. Morocco skipper Ghizlane Chebbak and winger Sanaa Mssoudy scored in the first half hour to see the home team take a surprise lead as it sought to become only the fourth country to take the continental title after Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa. A capacity crowd saw Chebbak increase her tournament tally to five goals as she fired home from the edge of the area in the 12th minute after Nigeria had failed to clear properly. Mssoudy's goal came 12 minutes later, after Morocco striker Ibtissam Jraidi had crashed into centre back Marvis Ohale and the ball spilled out for Mssoudy to cut in and finish, but the referee determined there was no foul play and let the second goal stand. Nigeria dominated play thereafter and forced a succession of set pieces, but it took some good fortune to begin their comeback. Okoronkwo tucked away the spot kick to reduce the score in the 64th minute. Seven minutes later, it was level as Okoronkwo powered her way through the Moroccan defence before unselfishly squaring for Ijamilusi to tap the ball home. Morocco was then awarded a penalty with 10 minutes remaining in another contentious handball call, but this was overturned after the referee was asked to review. A crestfallen home team was then caught out as Echegeni raced onto the ball and tucked it away from close range for a dramatic winner. Nigeria has now won 10 of the 13 editions of the tournament and re-established its continental dominance after having ceded the title to South Africa at the last edition in 2022.
