Greggs fans left fuming after 'favourite' lunch item quietly axed from menu

Daily Record03-06-2025

The decision to axe the beloved menu item has left fans "devastated."
There's no denying that we Brits love a Greggs. From delicious savoury bakes to sweet treats, there is something to suit anyone's taste buds.
For many, a popular go-to order for lunch was the Chargrill Chicken Oval Bite. First launched in 2016, the sandwich offered foodies a lighter, healthier option that was ideal for the warmer, summer months.

Despite being a fan-favourite, its absence has been noted by devoted fans who usually order the sandwich, with one taking to a Reddit subforum dedicated to the bakery chain.

They wrote: "Chargrill chicken oval bite been taken off the menu?
"I've literally checked 5 different Gregg's locations in the past week and they haven't had the chargrill chicken oval bite in stock. They don't even have the little name tag on shelves, are they axing this? It was my favourite since I was wee and I'd be devastated lol."
Another shopper who had the same query responded with: "Aye, can't find it in any I've been in."
However, it looks like the fan-favourite has officially been quietly removed from the menu, with a Greggs spokesperson reportedly confirming to the Sun that it was axed to make way for the new Roast Chicken Salad Roll that launched in May.
Other foodies flocked to the same post to confirm it was no longer available, as another responded with: "Ye they've got this rubbish roast chick sub instead, sorry to break it to you OP."

Someone else added: "Sadly it is gone. There is a Roast Chicken and Honey Mustard which is as close as it gets. Its not bad but I did prefer the original."
Although, one user did advise that the new roast chicken sandwich was virtually the same as the fan-favourite, writing: "It's now called roast chicken. It's basically exactly the same. Give it a go!"

The Chargrill Chicken Oval Bite, which cost £2.50, boasted chargrill chicken pieces that had been drizzled with honey mustard mayonnaise, tomatoes, cucumber and salad leaves that had all been packed in seeded bun.
It was part of the beloved bakery chain's lighter menu that launched back in 2016, offering foodies a selection of cold sandwiches, wraps and rolls that were said to be under 400 calories each.

Meanwhile, the new roll that it has been replaced with, which is fairly similar, features sliced roast chicken breast topped with tomato, cucumber, mixed leaf salad and seasoned mayonnaise in a white and wholemeal roll.
According to a description on the bakery chain's website, it is also another health choice for those looking to make better choices, as it is said to come in at just 336 calories.
It comes just after Greggs recently excited foodies with a whole brand new summer menu, with savoury options such as pizza slices and a red pepper, feta and spinach bake, alongside sweet treats such as a new lemon meringue muffin.

5 chilling expert theories on what caused doomed Air India Dreamliner's crash

Air India flight 171, headed to London Gatwick and carrying 53 Brits among its 242 passengers, crashed this morning into a residential area minutes after taking off Following the harrowing news that an Air India flight crashed down just minutes after take-off, experts have been sharing theories over what could have caused the catastrophe. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner took off from at 1.38pm local time on Thursday. It was set to land at London Gatwick at 6.25pm BST, but instead crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar. ‌ Aboard the flight were 242 passengers, including 53 British nationals, 169 Indian nationals, seven Portuguese people, and one Canadian. The cause of the crash has not been shared yet, with Boeing stating: "We are aware of initial reports and are working to gather more information.' ‌ Several aviation experts have shared their thoughts on possible theories on social media. X user @politicalpilot posted a screenshot from a video of the crash and wrote: 'I'm convinced they have flaps set to 0. Flaps should be set to 5 or 15 degrees. At 37C air temperature and a full fuel load, this would 100% result in the aircraft unable to climb.' However, Gaurav Taneja, a pilot-turned-YouTuber, said that it looked like a 'dual engine failure after take off'. He explained: 'Nothing short of a complete power loss can force a modern aircraft into that kind of sink rate, right after take off.' Taneja added that this was 'extremely, extremely, extremely rare' and a pilot 'cannot do anything' if he loses both engines after take-off at a certain height. Terry Tozer, a former airline pilot, told GB News that it was 'far too early to speculate on what might have caused this'. However, he said: 'The aircraft should have been able to take a fairly substantial failure and continue to take-off safely, it is a puzzle why something so catastrophic should happen.' ‌ A former Air India employee, Chinnu Rao, posted on X that the airline has 'the best pilots in the world '. Rao said: 'If the pilot issued the May Day just after taking off the dreamliner (Flight 171) it means it has serious engine issues.' Meanwhile, Prof John McDermid, Lloyd's Register Chair of Safety at the University of York, said it is "very unlikely" the problem stemmed from the aircraft being overweight or carrying too much fuel. 'It is too early to say much about the cause of the crash in any detail - about the only observation one can make is about the timing," he pointed out. "Take-off and landing are the most dangerous phases of flight - accidents from cruise are very unusual. ‌ "However, that said, it's surprising that the accident occurred before the aircraft had even got to 200metres altitude. Pilots can abort take-off until quite late in the take-off roll, so it seems like the problem occurred very suddenly in the final part of the take-off roll, or shortly after take-off, and was sufficiently serious to be unmanageable. "Given the levels of redundancy in systems, the fact that aircraft are designed to climb out on only one engine, etc. on initial sight this seems a very surprising accident." ‌ The professor added: 'It is very unlikely the plane was overweight or carrying too much fuel – there are careful checks on this.' While the cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed, the pilot's last words could point to a possible source. The last words heard over the radio during a Mayday call to Air Traffic Control were 'engine failure', the Express reported. ‌ Following the news of the crash, Air India's chairman, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, shared a statement in which he confirmed that the plane 'was involved in a tragic accident'. He said: Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event.' Chandrasekaran continued: 'At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted.' He confirmed that further updates would be shared as the airline received more verified information. A support team has been set up for families seeking information. Meanwhile, the UK prime minister shared a statement on social media. Sir Keir Starmer said: 'The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating. I am being kept updated as the situation develops, and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time.' Timeline of Air India flight 171 crash
