Kyiv rocked by one of Ukraine war's largest Russian air attacks

Russia launched one of its largest air strikes on Kyiv in over three years of war and struck a maternity ward in the southern city of Odesa in attacks that killed at least two people, officials said on Tuesday.
The overnight strikes followed Russia's biggest drone assault of the war on Ukraine on Monday and were part of intensified bombardments that Moscow says are retaliation for attacks by Ukrainian forces on Russia.
Loud explosions shook Kyiv and blasts and fires lit up the sky in the early hours of Tuesday morning, leaving palls of heavy smoke over the city, Reuters witnesses said.
At least four people were treated in hospital after seven of the capital's 10 districts were hit, city officials said.

'Today was one of the largest attacks on Kyiv,' President Volodymyr Zelensky said. 'Russian missile and Shahed (drone) strikes drown out the efforts of the United States and others around the world to force Russia into peace.'

Russia, Ukraine start new exchange of prisoners of war

Russia and Ukraine launched on Monday a new prisoner exchange, agreed earlier this month during direct negotiations in Istanbul between representatives from both countries. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the first group of Russian soldiers under the age of 25 has been released from Ukrainian captivity. In return, a similar number of Ukrainian prisoners were handed over by Moscow. Neither side disclosed the exact number of individuals involved. Moscow said the repatriated Russian soldiers are currently in Belarus, where they are receiving medical assistance. 'Our people are home,' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X. He confirmed the return of young soldiers and seriously injured individuals but did not provide specific figures. Zelensky said the exchange process is 'quite complex' although he expressed hope that the Istanbul agreement would be fully implemented. Russia launches 479 drones, highest overnight number since war began, says Ukraine

Russia launched 479 drones at Ukraine in the biggest overnight drone bombardment of the three-year war, the Ukrainian air force said on Monday, as the Kremlin presses its summer offensive against the backdrop of direct peace talks. As well as drones, 20 missiles of various types were fired at different parts of Ukraine, according to the air force, which said the barrage targeted mainly central and western areas of Ukraine. Three people were killed in Kyiv and over a dozen were wounded. First responders were among the casualties. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, posted casualty figures on Telegram. Kyiv Metro – whose deep tunnels are used as shelters – said that its infrastructure had been damaged and one of the key lines was partially closed. Ukraine's air force said its air defences destroyed 277 drones and 19 missiles in mid-flight on Sunday night, claiming that only 10 hit their target. It was not possible to independently verify the claims.
