A star is born: Gonzalo Garcia makes most of Club World Cup

EAST RUTHERFORD: Real Madrid's 21-year-old striker Gonzalo Garcia has gone from virtual unknown to a tournament sensation at the Club World Cup, netting his fourth goal in five games on Saturday to help send the La Liga side into the semi-final.
At a tournament where organisers were banking on household names to build the excitement, the academy graduate has become the breakout star, seizing his chance to deputise for an ill Kylian Mbappe.
"We've seen him play in the last few games and today he did it again," said manager Xabi Alonso. "He is making the most of this opportunity."
Garcia's terrific run began in Real's opener against Al-Hilal last month, where he scored in a 1-1 draw, as Mbappe was sidelined with acute gastroenteritis.
He recorded an assist in Real's second group-stage affair against Pachuca and added a bit of insurance in Real's 3-0 win over Salzburg to close out the group stage.
He headed another in to clinch their round of 16 win over Juventus 1-0 on Tuesday, where Mbappe came in off the bench for Garcia.
Mbappe was a second-half substitute again on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, but this time came on as veteran forward Vinicius Jr. came off, a sign of just how high Garcia's stock has climbed.
"I think that he is in the right place, right time, and we're very happy with the work he's doing - and he's also scoring goals," Alonso told reporters.
It was hardly what fans expected from the homegrown talent who had made few starts in La Liga before the US-hosted tournament, but has become the bedrock of the Real attack under manager Alonso.

Modric move to Milan confirmed by new coach Allegri

Real Madrid's Croatia captain Luka Modric will join AC Milan after the Club World Cup, the Serie A club's newly-appointed manager Massimiliano Allegri confirmed on Monday. The move means the 39-year-old midfielder, who announced in May that he would be leaving Madrid after the Club World Cup, will bring his 13-year spell at the Spanish giants to a close. "Modric will arrive in August. He is an extraordinary player," Allegri told reporters in his first press conference as Milan manager. Real face Paris St Germain in the Club World cup semi-finals on Wednesday, with the final scheduled for Sunday. Modric, the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, will join a Milan side looking to bounce back from a disappointing campaign that saw them finish eighth and miss out on European competition. "To the fans, I say the most important thing is to work well every day," Allegri said. "The only way to regain respect is through responsibility and by achieving results. We will absolutely need their support." The Italian, who has joined Milan for a second time after replacing the sacked Sergio Conceicao at the end of May, also outlined some key changes to the squad ahead of the new season. Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders was sold to Manchester City in June while France left back Theo Hernandez could be on his way to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. "While Reijnders and Hernandez won't be part of the team next season, (goalkeeper) Mike Maignan and (forward) Rafael Leao seem willing to stay," Allegri said. Milan will kick off their Serie A campaign on August 23 with a home fixture against Cremonese. Allegri, who previously guided Milan to a Serie A title in the 2010-11 season, last managed Juventus.

Fluminense aim to beat Chelsea to continue Club World Cup fairytale

BERLIN: Brazilian team Fluminense, which six months ago was fighting to avoid relegation to the second division and is now a surprise Club World Cup semifinalist, will face Chelsea as they aim to write a fairytale in the United States (US), reported German Press Agency (dpa). The club from Rio de Janeiro is the only non-European club to reach this stage of the revamped tournament. "God has blessed us and made it possible for us to overcome that moment," veteran captain Thiago Silva said ahead of the clash against Chelsea on Tuesday. The 40-year-old defender was a key player in helping Fluminense avoid relegation and now reaching the Club World Cup semifinals. A win against Chelsea would see them face either Real Madrid or Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. Fluminense are something of an "ugly duckling" in this elite circle, coach Renato Portaluppi joked. But in sporting terms, the underdog team earned this prestigious game on the big football stage. "Many people didn't believe in us, and now we're in the semifinals. Fluminense are now one of the four best teams in the world," Portaluppi said. "I always tell the guys, 'Don't put off until tomorrow what you can achieve today.' Who knows when another chance like this will come along?" For Thiago Silva, it's also a reunion with his past. He played for Chelsea between 2020 and 2024, winning the Champions League and the old format of the Club World Cup in 2021 under coach Thomas Tuchel. Silva also played in Europe for AC Milan and PSG, among other teams. But last year, he returned to his hometown club, Fluminense. "He's a phenomenon. He has enormous experience and is an extension of the coach on the pitch," Portaluppi said.
