GMC mayoral election today
Guntur: The Guntur Municipal Corporation Telugu Desam Party floor leader Kovelamudi Ravindra (Nani) filed nomination to contest in the mayoral election to be held on Monday at GMC office.
The government is conducting the Guntur mayoral election in the backdrop of resignation of mayor Kavati Sivanaga Manohar Naidu. He submitted his nomination papers to the joint collector and mayoral election presiding officer A Bhargav Teja at the collectorate on Sunday. The government directed Guntur district joint collector A Bhargav Teja to conduct the GMC mayoral election.
TDP has an absolute majority in the GMC council to elect the mayor and it may be mentioned that the TDP-JSP bagged all the GMC standing committee seats in the GMC.
Ravindra is likely to be elected as a mayor. Following orders of the government, the JC issued notices to all the corporators, ex-officio members of the GMC to attend the mayoral election.
He visited the GMC office in Guntur city on Sunday and reviewed the arrangements in the GMC council hall for conducting the special council meeting to elect the mayor.
He said a special council meeting will be held at 11 am on Monday and urged all the members to attend the meeting with the identity cards by 10.30 am.
He said that except members, others are not allowed into council hall and cell phones are not allowed into the council hall.
He further said that Section-144 will be in force in the GMC office surroundings. He instructed the police officials to take all the precautionary measures. TDP and YSRCP issued whips and submitted the whips to Bhargav Teja. Ravindra submitted his B Form to Bhargav Teja.

'Derogatory' Remarks Against Amaravati: Journalist Who Hosted Show Arrested
Amaravati: Senior Telugu journalist Kommineni Srinivas Rao was arrested in Hyderabad on Monday for hosting a programme on a vernacular channel where a scribe allegedly made derogatory remarks against the greenfield capital city Amaravati, said a police official. Guntur district Superintendent of Police S Satish confirmed that Thullur police from Amaravati have arrested the journalist. "Thullur police have arrested Kommineni Srinivas Rao from Hyderabad over the derogatory remarks against Amaravati," Satish told PTI, adding that the journalist is being brought to Andhra Pradesh from Telangana. VVR Krishna Raju, the journalist, who was also part of the programme, was accused of spewing venom against Amaravati and its women. According to information shared by a source close to the TDP-led NDA government, the duo were booked under BNS Sections 79, 196 (1), 353 (2), 299, 356 (2) and 61 (1) and Section 67 of the IT Act, including Section (1) of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. Meanwhile, YSRCP said that an FIR was registered against Rao four days ago in Thullur police station, accusing him of "failing to intervene during the broadcast", which featured those alleged vitriolic remarks. "Immediately after his arrest, Rao was transferred to Vijayawada. Rao, a senior citizen, questioned the legality of the arrest without explanation," said a note from the YSRCP. Condemning the arrest, YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, called it a "political vendetta". "In any discussion, diverse opinions are natural. Punishing an anchor for guests' statements is not only unjust, it's dangerous," Reddy said in a post on 'X'. The former chief minister questioned the rationale behind punishing a moderator for remarks made by panelists during a televised debate, warning such actions endanger democratic discourse and press freedom. He accused the TDP-led NDA government of suppressing dissent, using fear and intimidation tactics to silence intellectuals, journalists, and opposition voices across the southern state. He alleged that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was "weaponising the state apparatus" to divert public attention from failures, corruption, and broken electoral promises. "You (Naidu) were given five years-one has already passed. The day will come when the people will demand answers for your abuses and injustices," Reddy warned.

Govt. working to turn A.P. into knowledge hub, says Revenue Minister
Minister for Revenue Angani Satya Prasad on Monday said that Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Minister for Education Nara Lokesh are working together to turn the State into a knowledge hub. The Minister was presenting 'Shining Stars Awards' to meritorious students at Mahati Auditorium in Tirupati on Monday (June 9). Speaking on the occasion, he said, 'As part of the government's goal to make the State a knowledge hub, we are giving 'Shining Star Awards' to recognise talent and encourage meritorious students who have topped in SSC and intermediate examinations. The government is working to bring changes in the curriculum from kindergarten to post-graduation (KG to PG).' The Minister said that Mr. Lokesh is putting the education system back on track. Mid-day meal scheme is being introduced for intermediate students, model schools are being set up across the State, infrastructure is being developed in educational institutions, he said while adding that priority is being given to skill development and skill census is being conducted for the first time in the country. Mr. Prasad asked all the students to use the incentives being provided by the government and rise to high positions. Alleging that the previous government had destroyed the education system in the State, he said, 'A.P. had been ranked third place in the education sector during the regime of TDP, but it came down to 19th place during the YSRCP rule due to destructive policies.' 'The previous government has bankrupted the State in all sectors. Six lakh people attended the beach festival held in Machilipatnam on Sunday. Flamingo Festival and no other such events were conducted during the YSRCP regime.
