What we know as man, 84, dies in hospital after XL Bully attack
A pensioner has died in hospital over a month after being badly injured in an XL bully attack in Cheshire.
Armed police descended on Bardsley Avenue, Warrington, on the evening of Monday, February 24, following reports of a dog attack in the front garden of someone's home.
Two dogs were killed by officers, who were forced to fire a total of 19 shots to bring the attack to a halt, while a third, smaller dog was also seized.
An 84-year-old man was taken to hospital, however, despite the best efforts of medics, he died of his injuries on Sunday.
Detectives said the victim "fought so hard" following the attack but that "sadly, his injuries were too much".
The victim had been walking along the road when he was attacked by a dog, which had reportedly escaped from a nearby home.
Armed police reached the scene at around 6.40pm and fired 19 shots due to the "sheer size and ferocity of these animals".
While Cheshire Police only mentions a single XL bully attacking the pensioner in its statement from this morning, the force said in February that two dogs, believed to be XL bullies, had been destroyed by officers (one inside a property), while another, smaller dog had been seized.
The victim was taken to Aintree Hospital but passed away on Sunday, 30 March. His next of kin have been informed.
Following the incident, Sean Garner, of Bardsley Avenue, Warrington was charged with one count of being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control causing serious injury.
He was also charged with two counts of possession or custody of a dog to which section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 applied, namely an XL bully.
Detective Inspector Simon Mills said: "To endure such pain and anguish at the hands of an animal is unimaginable, and I cannot begin to comprehend the distress that his family are currently suffering following such an horrific incident.
'Nobody should have to go through what they have experienced, and our specialist officers are providing them with the support they need at this truly awful time."
While at least one of the dogs was reported to have escaped from a nearby home, we don't know the exact circumstances leading to the animal being let loose on the street.
Despite Cheshire Police's earlier statement saying two dogs had been shot dead, some news reports from today are only mentioning one dog attacking the pensioner. One of the xl bully dogs is believed to have been shot dead inside a property, suggesting only one dog was involved in the attack.
The exact nature of the victim's injuries have not been shared, and the man is yet to be named or pictured.
His family may decide to share a tribute and photographs through the police in the coming days, otherwise, he may be named during court proceedings.
In light of the man's death, the Crown Prosecution Service will now determine if any changes need to be made to the charges, Cheshire Police said.
One neighbour, named Vic, told the Liverpool Echo he "saw everything happen" as he looked through his kitchen window.
He says he saw a man lying on the floor in the driveway across the street and thought he'd had a heart attack at first before seeing "this massive dog".
"I ran over and battered it with my yard brush. I cracked it over the head, but it didn't work. It wouldn't get off him," Vic said.
"I should have got a knife from the kitchen, really, but I didn't think. I just grabbed the brush. If I'd had a gun handy, I'd have used that."
Vic said he called over to a neighbour over the street and asked them to call the police, and that residents were told to get inside when armed officers arrived.
"I went back inside and looked through the window and saw the police shoot the dog dead," said Vic, who added: "I'm traumatised by what happened. There was blood on my boots and over my brush. It was everywhere."

Dad's heartbreaking yet inspiring message after girl, 9, killed in Bexleyheath crash
The father of a nine-year-old girl who died after being hit by a bus in a Bexleyheath crash has shared a heartbreaking message. Ada Bicakcim, a young Turkish and British national, was rushed to hospital after being hit by a bus on August 3, 2024, at 9.30am. Martin Asolo-Agogua had not been to sleep after a night of partying when he turned up to his 8am shift to drive that day, and was seen yawning and nodding off before his bus swerved onto the pavement on Watling Street, killing Ada two days later and narrowly missing her five-year-old brother. The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drugs (cannabis). Today (June 9), he was sentenced to four years in prison. Ada's father, Bora, said: "The images of that horrific moment remain seared into my mind. That scene replays endlessly, a constant reminder of the day my world fractured beyond repair. "This tragedy happened on my watch, a father's ultimate failure. My world has been turned upside down, and with it, the foundations of my family have crumbled. "My darling Ada. Our thanks are not enough to show our gratitude for you. We will honour your name with acts of magnitude. You will never be forgotten. "We will make this story one of love and thanks that we owe everybody. 'Your presence, and passing, will leave a mark in this country and we will fight to make drug driving a part of its history.' READ ALSO: 'My 9-year-old girl is dead because a bus driver took drugs and partied all night' Bexleyheath bus driver jailed for killing girl, 9, after night spent partying At the scene, Asolo-Ogugua was drug tested, which he failed. He was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving and drug-driving. Officers built enough evidence to charge him on February 13 thus years, with causing death by dangerous driving while under influence of drugs as well as driving while over the drug limit. He pleaded guilty to both offences at Woolwich Crown Court on April 22. Martin Asolo- Agogua turned up to work having been up all night at a party (Image: Met Police) Asolo-Ogugua, of Banfield Road in Southwark, was also disqualified from driving for seven years. Senior Crown Prosecutor, Miranda Jollie, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: 'Asolo-Ogugua was reckless and utterly selfish to get behind the wheel of a bus after consuming drugs and put many lives at risk that day. 'His actions have robbed a young girl of her entire life. Our thoughts remain with Ada's family and friends as they try to come to terms with their unimaginable loss "I hope his sentence today can help to bring some closure for Ada's family and highlight the devastating consequences of drug driving.'

British girl who took life was radicalised by U.S. neo-Nazis, inquest says
By Michael Holden LONDON (Reuters) -A British teenage girl, who had said she wanted to blow up a synagogue and became fixated with Adolf Hitler, had been sucked into far-right extremism by two American neo-Nazis, a British coroner said on Monday. Rhianan Rudd, who was 16, took her own life in May 2022 at a children's home having been investigated by police and Britain's domestic security service MI5 over extremist views. Two years earlier, Rudd's mother had referred her daughter to the counter-radicalisation scheme, Prevent. She is believed to be the youngest girl to be charged with terrorism offences in Britain after she was arrested when 14, though the case against her was later dropped. At an inquest into her death, the Chief Coroner of England and Wales Alexia Durran said she had been initially radicalised by her mother's former partner, a U.S. neo-Nazi who had convictions for violence. She was further drawn into extremism by U.S. white supremacist Chris Cook, who was jailed in 2023 for terrorism over plans to attack power grids, Durran also said. Rudd, who had autism, became obsessed with fascism, even carving a swastika into her forehead, and had downloaded material about making bombs and 3D guns, Durran said. Durran concluded that both Mallaburn and Cook were each "a significant radicalising influence on Rhianan" who had "played a material role in introducing and encouraging Rhianan's interest in extreme right-wing materials". LEARNING FROM PAIN Rudd's mother Emily Carter said she believed that the police and MI5's prolonged investigation had played a role in her daughter's death. "Whilst nothing can ever bring Rhianan back, I urge all the authorities that came into contact with her to learn from what happened so that no other family has to experience the pain we have endured," Carter said in a statement. The charges against Rudd were not dropped until August 2021, four months after social workers believed she might have been a victim of sexual exploitation. However, giving her ruling at Chesterfield Coroners' Court in central England, Durran rejected the argument that the state had played a role in her death, saying it had been appropriate to investigate and prosecute her. "I am satisfied that the missed opportunities that occurred in this case were not systemic," she said. British authorities have become very concerned about the online radicalisation of young people. MI5's Director General Ken McCallum said last year that 13% of all those they were investigating were under 18, a threefold increase in the last three years. Britain's Crown Prosecution Service offered condolences to Rudd's family. "This is a tragic case," added Nick Price, CPS director of legal services. We do not prosecute young or vulnerable people lightly. Terrorism offences are extremely serious, and these are decisions our specialist prosecutors take great care over."
