BJP: Burqa-clad intern incited communal tension in Tonk hosp
Bhilwara: A controversy erupted in Rajasthan's Tonk district Monday, a day after a video surfaced showing a dispute between a burqa-wearing medical intern and a gynaecologist at the district's Zenana Hospital (MCH). The intern, who refused to remove her veil during duty hours, was accused by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) of attempting to incite communal tension. The video, which went viral Sunday, captures an argument between the intern and Dr Bindu Gupta, a gynecologist at the hospital, who requested the intern to uncover her face for clinical reasons, citing the hospital's dress code. "There is a dress code in the hospital that applies to everyone. The intern refused to comply and instead recorded and circulated the video, creating unnecessary controversy," Gupta said. The BJP, led by Tonk district president Chandraveer Singh Chauhan, submitted a memorandum to district collector Kalpana Agrawal Monday, demanding strict action against those "spreading communal discord". The memorandum called for departmental and legal action against the intern for making a video inside the labour room, treating patients without proper identification, and not adhering to the prescribed uniform. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Avanza con tranquillità verso il tuo futuro finanziario eToro Learn More Undo Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr Hanuman Prasad Bairwa, clarified that the intern was only asked to remove her face veil, not the burqa, as per the dress code. He also said neither the doctor nor the intern had lodged a formal complaint, but Congress leaders had submitted a complaint, prompting an investigation. Dr Vinod Parveria, in-charge of the women's hospital, reiterated that the face veil needed to be lifted for medical duties, which is standard practice. He also said a proper investigation and appropriate action would be undertaken as per the rules. Muslim organizations and Congress members protested against Gupta, demanding departmental action. They met with Parveria, expressing dissatisfaction over the incident. Meanwhile, Tonk Kotwali police station officer said no formal complaint had been received from the doctor or the medical intern and added that an investigation would be initiated if one is filed. Bindu Gupta, meanwhile, denied all allegations, asserting that the dress code was mandatory for everyone, including the Unani intern, to ensure patients can identify medical staff clearly. Principal Medical Officer of Saadat Hospital, Hanuman Prasad, criticised the intern for recording a video in the labour room, stating that any issues should have been reported rather than made public.
