Good News for Punekars! Union Cabinet approves Pune Metro extension; IT hubs, institutions to benefit
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Phase 2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, which will extend the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Phase 2 includes two elevated corridors: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi.
These two corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, covering suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi.
According to an official statement, the Phase-2 project is scheduled to be completed in four years. The estimated cost of the project is ₹ 3,626.24 crore, which will be equally shared by the Centre, the Maharashtra government, and external bilateral or multilateral agencies.
'This strategic proposal is a logical extension of the existing Corridor-2 and aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which envisions a continuous Chandani Chowk to Wagholi Metro corridor to strengthen East–West mass transit in Pune,' the statement said.
'These extensions will serve key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential pockets, increasing the share of public transport and ridership across the network,' it added.
Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will implement the project and execute all civil, electromechanical, and related works.
To enable seamless multimodal urban travel, the new corridors will be integrated at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court).
Under the long-term mobility plan, intercity bus services from cities such as Mumbai and Bengaluru will also be integrated at the Chandani Chowk metro station.
While buses from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi station.
'These extensions will also help decongest arterial routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering safe, fast, and eco-friendly mobility options,' the statement said.
'After completion of these corridors, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh in 2057,' it added.

PM to begin five-nation tour next week, visit Brazil for Brics Summit
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a five-nation tour next week to participate in the Brics Summit in Brazil and to bolster India's relations with several key nations of the Global South, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday. The Indian side is expected to seek the Brics bloc's support for its campaign against cross-border terrorism in the wake of last month's clashes with Pakistan (REUTERS) The main engagement of the week-long visit, expected to begin on July 2, will be Modi's participation in the Brics Summit in Rio de Janeiro during July 6-7, the people said on condition of anonymity. This will be clubbed with a bilateral visit to Brazil to strengthen relations between two important members of the Brics grouping. In addition to focusing on measures to strengthen economic cooperation between members of Brics - it brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) - the summit is expected to discuss the fallout of conflicts around the globe. The Indian side is expected to seek the bloc's support for its campaign against cross-border terrorism in the wake of last month's clashes with Pakistan, the people said. These visits are in keeping with India's efforts to forge stronger relations with key players of the Global South and to bolster economic and trade relations with countries such as Argentina, which is being eyed as a potential supplier of rare earth minerals, the people said. Defence and security collaboration, counter-terrorism cooperation, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, food security, energy partnerships, digitalisation and reform of global governance institutions will also be a key part of discussions with the four other countries to be visited by the Prime Minister, the people said. The visits to Ghana and Namibia will also reinforce India's focus on Africa, especially for development cooperation and bolstering of trade ties, as part of efforts to counter China's expanding footprint in the continent, the people said.

Vijayawada, June 26 (UNI) Union Minister for Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has asserted that the number of tourists visiting Pahalgam in J and K has gone up, in the aftermath of the April 22 terrorist attack. Addressing a press conference here today, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that he visited Pahalgam recently. 'The tourists have started coming to Jammu and Kashmir. The influx to Pahalgam has gone up now, after the unfortunate incident,' he highlighted, referring to the terrorist attack there in which 26 tourists were killed. The Union Minister reiterated that the Centre had decided to commemorate the 50th year of imposition of Emergency in the country as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. Indians should commemorate the darkest chapter of the Emergency to pay tributes to thousands of people who sacrificed to protect democracy in the country, he noted. 'Their sacrifice has preserved our constitution. Our freedom is not a gift but earned through sacrifices of thousands of people. The basic core of our constitution is human rights and freedom of speech,' he affirmed. Shekhawat said that Emergency was imposed only to remain in power by the then rulers, who cited internal disturbances as the reason. Over one lakh people were arrested during the Emergency and press censorship was imposed while civil liberties were suspended, he recalled. The imposition of Emergency made the life of people in the country miserable, he said.
