"Artery inflammation—also known as atherosclerosis—is more than just a medical buzzword," says Dr. Patrick Kee, MD, Ph.D., a cardiologist with Vital Heart & Vein. "It's a key contributor to heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions." However, Dr. Kee and other cardiologists emphasize that it's crucial to have the most accurate information on artery inflammation, including how to lower it—because yes, that's possible and important. Yet, taking the reins of your health can feel overwhelming, especially in today's age of information overload. Cardiologists suggest starting with this one daily habit to lower inflammation in your arteries. 🩺 💊 What Is Artery Inflammation, Anyway? "Artery inflammation is the process that leads to the buildup of plaque inside your arteries," Dr. Kee reports. "This plaque is made up of fats, cholesterol and inflammatory cells, and it can narrow or block blood flow." High cholesterol is commonly linked to inflammation in the arteries, but it's not the only risk culprit. "It can be caused by many factors such as high cholesterol—especially elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high blood pressure, smoking, as well as infection and autoimmune diseases," says , a cardiologist with Manhattan Cardiology and a contributor. "It decreases inflammation by promoting healthy endothelial function by decreasing oxidative stress at the cellular level and decreasing bad cardiac outcomes." Log a half-hour workout at a moderate intensity five times per week, and you'll meet the American Heart Association's recommendations for physical activity. 2. Attend regular check-ups with your PCP Knowledge is power. "Attend regular physical check-ups with your primary care physician so you know what your numbers are—cholesterol, blood pressure and weight," Dr. Suppogu advises. Once you know where you stand, Dr. Suppogu says you can work to improve or maintain your numbers, which might include medications. 3. So, we spoke with four to find out which cooking oil they most often turn to—and interestingly enough, they all cited the same kind!Meet Our Expert Jamie Adams, MS, RDN, RPYT, a women's health dietitian, and founder and owner of Mamaste Nutrition Sheila Patterson, RD, CDCES, a registered dietitian based in Salt Lake City, Utah Sapna Peruvemba, MS, RDN, registered dietitian and founder of Health by Sapna Sam Schleiger, MS, RDN, CD, CLT, IFNCP, functional dietitian, women's health specialist, and owner of Simply Nourished Functional NutritionWhat to Look for in Cooking Oil Unsurprisingly, there are several key criteria these RDs consider when choosing a cooking oil: Nutritional Content First, as you might expect, they prioritize an oil with impressive nutritional benefits. 'When it comes to choosing cooking oils, I'm always thinking about how the body responds, how stable the oil is under heat, and how it supports (or disrupts) inflammation, hormones, gut health, and mineral balance,' explains Sam Schleiger, MS, RDN, CD, CLT, IFNCP, functional dietitian, women's health specialist, and owner of Simply Nourished Functional Nutrition. This is where a cooking oil's fatty acid profile comes into play. 'I prioritize oils that are rich in healthy fats—especially monounsaturated fats—and low in saturated fat,' explains Sapna Peruvemba, MS, RDN, registered dietitian and founder of Health by Sapna. Monounsaturated fat and saturated fat each impact heart health in different ways. 'Monounsaturated fats or 'good' fats are linked to heart health benefits including lowering LDL (low-density lipoprotein, or 'bad') cholesterol and triglyceride levels,' shares Sheila Patterson, RD, CDCES, registered dietitian. This translates to a reduced risk of heart disease. Meanwhile, though undoubtedly controversial, some studies show that certain types of saturated fats may contribute to increased heart disease risk, particularly when consumed in high amounts over long periods of time. This warrants caution around cooking oils (or other fats) high in the nutrient, like coconut oil, palm oil, and butter. Fats with a higher percentage of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs) than omega-3 fatty acids are also something to be wary of. While omega-6 fatty acids are needed for overall health, they promote inflammation in the body and Americans tend to eat too much of them compared to anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. 'Excessive consumption of omega-6 PUFAs from industrially-produced seed oils (like canola, soy, safflower, etc.) are pro-inflammatory and can disrupt the omega-3/omega-6 balance,' Schleiger agrees. And finally, partially hydrogenated oils (i.e. trans fats) should be avoided at all costs. This is because they negatively impact heart health in two ways: by lowering HDL (high-density lipoprotein, or 'good') cholesterol and increasing LDL cholesterol. Thankfully, these are generally only found in outdated fats, like shortening. Smoke Point Smoke point, or the point at which an oil starts to smoke and break down on a molecular level, is another important consideration. 'I prioritize stability at high heat, because unstable oils (or oils with a low smoke point) oxidize easily when heated—turning into inflammatory compounds that can disrupt cellular membranes and increase oxidative stress. This is why smoke point and fatty acid composition matter so much,' explains Schleiger. Processing Processing is also an important aspect to consider. 'I look for oils that are minimally processed (cold-pressed or extra virgin when possible), as these retain more beneficial antioxidants and nutrients,' says Jamie Adams, MS, RDN, RPYT, a women's health dietitian, and founder and owner of Mamaste Nutrition. Flavor and Storage Flavor and storage are other factors these RDs take into account. While flavor is personal preference, how a cooking oil is stored is universally important. 'Cooking oils in dark, glass containers along with storage in a dark, cool place can preserve and protect the quality of the oil from oxidation and deterioration,' shares Patterson. The Healthiest Cooking Oil While these considerations might not seem like a big deal—since many Americans use cooking oils in small amounts—every choice we make in the kitchen can tip the scale, positively or negatively, when it comes to our health. 'We know that small daily choices add up. By choosing high-quality, stable fats, you're not just avoiding harm—you're actively nourishing your body at the cellular level,' Schleiger encourages. With this in mind, all four RDs shared that they regularly reach for the same cooking oil: olive oil. 'Olive oil is my number one go-to cooking oil in our home, especially extra virgin olive oil,' says Adams. Olive oil checks all the boxes for what these RDs consider to be a healthy cooking oil. 'Olive oil is rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and contains polyphenols—powerful antioxidants that support cardiovascular health by lowering inflammation and improving blood lipids,' adds Peruvemba. Research backs this up, with olive oil being tied to decreased risk for heart disease and all-cause mortality. 'It even plays a role in improved brain and metabolic health,' Adams shares. While other cooking oils have a higher smoke point than olive oil—especially extra virgin—this Mediterranean staple can still handle plenty of heat. 'Refined olive oil has a smoke point of 390 to 470 degrees Fahrenheit (°F), while extra virgin olive oil ranges from 350 to 410 °F, making it versatile for everyday cooking,' says Peruvemba. Schleiger agrees, adding, 'My take is that high-quality olive oil is safe for most stovetop cooking, as long as it's not smoking or left on high heat for long periods of time.' And extra virgin olive oil isn't only nutrient-dense—it's also plenty tasty. 'It has a flavorful taste I enjoy, especially in dressings or drizzled over vegetables,' offers Peruvemba. 'It's particularly fitting for recipes where its bold, peppery notes can complement the ingredients like in Greek, Caprese, or kale Caesar salads—along with pasta and lentil dishes,' Patterson adds. It's also somewhat of a catch-all oil in the kitchen—perfect for a wide range of savory dishes, and even some sweet ones like cakes, sweet breads, scones, and tarts. 'I love its versatility—it's just as delicious drizzled on a salad as it is used for sautéing veggies or roasting fish,' Adams agrees. "Any extreme is likely not good for you," Dr. Dmitry Yaranov, a heart transplant cardiologist at Stern Cardiovascular in Tennessee, known on social media for his tips on heart health, told Business Insider. Yaranov, who is the director of the advanced heart failure program at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, said he sees a fair amount of younger patients in their 20s and 30s. In one 2018 study, men in their 40s to 60s who followed high-protein diets (and consumed mostly high-cholesterol foods) increased their risk of heart failure by 50%. While athletes may feel motivated to fit in as much protein as possible, Yaranov said that eating way more than your daily recommended amount can overwork your kidneys, leading to inflammation. (Inflammation increases your risk of heart disease.) Plus, he said, taking ultra-processed protein supplements, such as protein powder, can also negatively impact cardiovascular health. "I've seen bodybuilders and athletes who look great, but they lack balance" when it comes to their diets, Yaranov said. "They end up with weak hearts and blocked arteries." He's a fan of the Blue Zones and Mediterranean diets, which feature both heart-healthy protein sources like fish and beans and anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Only drinking on the weekends In general, there's no safe amount of alcohol you can drink. However, the National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention says that if you want to stay within healthy limits, you shouldn't exceed more than seven drinks a week (one a day) if you're a woman and 14 (two a day) if you're a man. There's a caveat, though: you should avoid binge drinking, defined as four or more drinks per occasion for women and people over 65, and five drinks for men. Yaranov said some of the "sickest hearts" he's seen in younger patients in those who drink too much at once. These patients "don't necessarily drink daily, but they go hard on the weekends," he said. Some might even stay sober throughout the week, working out every day and eating a balanced diet. But "this one day of heavy alcohol use, it's not going to go unnoticed." Excessive drinking can cause a host of heart problems, from abnormal heart rhythms and heightened blood pressure to a greater risk of developing heart disease. The most common alcohol-related issue Yaranov sees is dilated cardiomyopathy, in which the heart's lower chambers become enlarged and weakened, unable to pump blood properly. In the end, it's better to have a mid-week glass of wine than pound back shots on a Saturday night, Yaranov said. In some cases, smoking weed Cannabis use has risen over the years, with some people swapping weed for alcohol entirely as a more "natural" recreational drug. Yaranov said he is concerned about a 2025 study showing that frequent marijuana use is linked to increased risks of heart attack and stroke. He said that members of the medical community are still learning about the full effects of cannabis on heart health and what the proper guidance should be around using it. Research on the topic is mixed and limited — some studies found cannabis use had no effect or even a positive effect on heart health. It's also difficult for researchers to isolate cannabis from other substance use, such as alcohol, drugs, or tobacco. In the meantime, Yaranov said he sees lots of younger patients with heart issues who otherwise have no risk factors except for heavy marijuana use. "With cannabis use as a daily habit, I think it's important for us to have this conversation now," he said. "A lot of times, this comes from this idea that it's harmless because it's an herb. I don't think that's the case." Pushing your workouts to the extreme Yaranov said that endurance athletes can experience "athlete's heart," a remodeling of their heart, with some heart muscles thickening to adapt to high-intensity training. While athlete's heart isn't itself dangerous, it can mask or mimic more serious heart conditions, like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic condition that causes thickened heart walls and can lead to cardiac arrest. He said this is very rare — you're more at risk of athlete's heart if you're a highly skilled athlete than if you just went too hard at the gym a few times. The bigger heart issues might stem more from the rise-and-grind lifestyle of working out. If a person frequently foregoes sleep to squeeze in those 5 a.m. workouts, they're increasing inflammation in their body, which is directly tied to cardiovascular risk. Poor sleep can also elevate stress, which leads to excess cortisol production, blood pressure elevation, and greater visceral fat. Yaranov said that healthy stress and sleep levels are harder to quantitatively measure than, say, your cholesterol. People also vary in what sleep schedules work for them or in how they channel stress. "We know it hurts you, but we don't know how much stress is enough to hurt you," he said.
