Bengaluru's day of shame as city failed its fans
A perfect storm of giddy, overenthusiastic fans, poor planning by officials, bad stadium management, stretched police force, shortage of time, clueless event management and lack of communication between stakeholders resulted in the tragic -- and totally avoidable -- deaths of 11 RCB fans and left nearly 100 injured.
At the crack of dawn, RCB lit up social media with the big news: The champions were flying home with the coveted IPL trophy and would celebrate with a grand victory parade in Bengaluru. It was an announcement that caught the cops unawares as they had no communication about it. But it sent the already-electrified fanbase into overdrive.
Then came the colossal collective failure: Police honchos failed to act swiftly and draw up crowd-control plans.
Politicians turned the celebration into a photo-op frenzy, brushing aside warnings in their race to bask in reflected glory. Many brought their families to Vidhana Soudha to pose with the cricketers.
"RCB gave the city a reason to celebrate. But police and politicians turned that joy into grief with their sheer incompetence. It's shameful that Bengaluru couldn't manage a 1km victory parade," said the grieving brother of one of the victims.

Even senior bureaucrats admitted that the lives could have been saved with proper planning and coordination. "The RCB management did not consult us before announcing a victory parade, we would not have allowed it given the crazy celebrations that unfolded on the streets on Tuesday night after the victory. But the political bosses were in no mood to listen, they wanted us to go ahead with bandobust," a senior police officer said.
Till mid-afternoon, there was no clarity whether there was a parade and where the events would be held. Senior cops were informed only around 2pm to be at the stadium and assembly. By which time, the crowds had already gathered.
At the cricket stadium, the scenes from early afternoon held bad portents. Fans had started flocking the gates by noon and it was apparent to any bystander that things would get of control soon. TOI reporters, who could not even get in, found that most gates stayed shut and false rumours of gate numbers led to huge rush. Naturally barricades collapsed, metal grills broke down and those who fell -- mostly young people and women – found themselves unable to get up and got crushed and trampled.

A few days ago, Indian cricket made one final push to change Kohli's mind when Arun Dhumal, the IPL president, urged Virat to reconsider his decision. He said he wanted Kohli to take back his retirement if his team, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, won the IPL. It's been more than 48 hours since RCB lifted their maiden IPL trophy, but Kohli has been silent on the matter. However, the one thing he did make clear shortly after he became an IPL champion was how much admiration he still has for Test cricket, when he called winning the IPL 'five levels below' Test cricket. Which is why Michael Clarke believes that we may not have seen the last of Virat Kohli in whites just yet. The former Australia World Cup-winning captain firmly feels that if the Indian team gets rogered in England, Kohli will come out of retirement. India are yet to win a Test series in England since 2007. They were whitewashed 0-4 in 2011, lost 1-3 in 2014, were humbled 1-4 in 2018 and drew 2-2 in 2021/22. With this being one of the least experienced Indian teams to ever tour England, India's wait could prolong further, and if that happens, chances are that Kohli could rethink his decision with a little bit of persuasion. "I believe this. If India go to England and get flogged, if they lose the series 5-0 for example, I think the fans will want Virat Kohli to come out of retirement and play Test cricket again. And I honestly, I think if he was asked by captain, selectors and supported by fans, if they get beaten big time in England, I think he'll come. He still loves Test cricket. I think his words, I think those words, like you could hear his passion for Test cricket is real," Clarke said on the Beyond23 podcast. He definitely made the decision to retire and whatever his reasons are, everybody comes to that time in their career. If that's the case, then so be it. But if they don't perform, if they get beaten, like I say, 5-0 in England, which I don't think they will. I think they can still win in England, even without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. I think this Indian squad is a good squad." One can also look at it from a point of view that, despite his declaration, Kohli has unfinished business with England. He had a forgettable tour in 2014, managing just 134 runs from five Tests, but four years later, made a tremendous comeback – arguably the best ever seen in Test cricket – when he pummelled almost 700 runs. Although India lost that series, he got the team perilously close to creating history three years later. India won the Test matches at Lord's and The Oval, and had the Trent Bridge match in their control when rain played spoilsport on the final day. The fifth Test was rescheduled due to Covid-19 the following year, which India lost to end the series 2-2. Clarke is mindful of the fact that the current Indian team is full of promise, good enough to do what no team before them has done in 18 years. But in case things go haywire, Kohli may be motivated to take his retirement back. "India is a passionate cricket country. They want to see their team win. I think they can still beat England. There you go. I think they're a good enough team. But if they don't, if they get flogged, I think there'll be a push for Virat Kohli to come out of retirement," he said.

Contribute Now New Delhi: Following the stampede in Bengaluru which led to the death of 11 people, the city police arrested a top official of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise and three persons from the event management company who had organised the victory celebrations after the team had won the Indian Premier League (IPL). The arrests were made after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah suspended city police commissioner B. Dayananda and directed police to arrest RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for the stampede, reported The Hindu. Among those arrested were Nikhil Sosale, the head of marketing and revenue, RCB at Diageo India Pvt. Ltd.. He was reportedly arrested from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) as he was flying out to Mumbai. The Bengaluru police have also arrested three from DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.. Earlier, the Cubbon Park Police had registered a suo motu FIR against RCB, KSCA officials and DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. who had been booked for culpable homicide, illegal assembly among other serious charges for the stampede. The high court had also taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and issued notice to the state government. It also directed it to file a status report providing information on, among other things, what steps were taken to regulate the crowd prior to the incident and whether it had formulated guidelines on managing large crowds at sports and celebratory events. The Karnataka government announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased. The RCB has also announced a matching compensation to the deceased's families. The statement read: 'We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team's arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us.' It further read, 'RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed, the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe.'
