Many were tied to forced labour and run by organised crime gangs primarily situated in Southeast Asia, the firm claims.
The 6.8million accounts in question were all banned in the first six months of 2025.
"Based on our investigative insights into the latest enforcement efforts, we proactively detected and took down accounts before scam centers were able to operationalize them," the social networking giant said.
"These scam centers typically run many scam campaigns at once – from cryptocurrency investments to pyramid schemes.
"There is always a catch and it should be a red flag for everyone: you have to pay upfront to get promised returns or earnings."
Meta notes one example where it worked with ChatGPT owner OpenAI to disrupt a criminal scam being run out of Cambodia.
These tempted people with cash for liking social media posts to promote a fake rent-a-scooter pyramid scheme.

"It's positive that WhatsApp has shut down 6.8 million accounts linked to scammers so far this year, but Meta must do much more to stop these criminals across all its platforms," said Lisa Webb, Which? Consumer Law Expert.
"In 2023 alone, £341 million was lost to authorised push payment fraudsters - over half of those scams were reported as originating on Meta platforms.
"For far too long, Meta has allowed scammers to run rampant across its platforms.
"Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users are being inundated with fraudulent ads for everything from fake investment opportunities to dodgy products and non-existent job offers.
'Meta needs to ensure that scams are prevented from ever appearing on its platforms in the first place."

Chat GPT reaches 'PhD level' with new features but could it replace humans?

The latest version of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, GPT-5, has dropped, and it can provide "PhD-level expertise" Many Brits may dabble in ChatGPT in their daily lives. The AI assistant can be used to do things like draw up a travel itinerary for a summer holiday or to give advice on the best way to cook a steak ahead of a big meal at home. ‌ But could the platform ever replace humans? ChatGPT is a conversational AI chatbot developed by OpenAI that can engage in conversations, generate human-like text, and perform tasks like writing essays and maths equations. ‌ The chatbot, then, is already very human-like, and developers have waded in on whether it could encroach on, or indeed override, our own day-to-day capabilities with the first major update it's had in years in the form of GPT-5. ‌ GPT‑5 is a "significant leap in intelligence over all our previous models," its maker OpenAI said. It is a "unified system that knows when to respond quickly and when to think longer to provide expert-level responses." Dubbed "smarter, faster, and more useful," GPT-5's makers say it can provide PhD-level expertise in areas such as coding and writing. "GPT-5 is really the first time that I think one of our mainline models has felt like you can ask a legitimate expert, a PhD-level expert, anything," OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said at a press briefing. ‌ GPT-5 can create software in its entirety and demonstrate better reasoning capabilities - with answers that show workings, logic and inference. The company claims it has been trained to be more honest, provide users with more accurate responses and says that, overall, it feels more human. "GPT-3 sort of felt to me like talking to a high school student... 4 felt like you're kind of talking to a college student," he said in a briefing ahead of Thursday's launch. "GPT-5 is the first time that it really feels like talking to an expert in any topic, like a PhD-level expert." ‌ However, Altman has stressed that the system is still a long way from replacing humans. For instance, GPT‑5 is the "best model yet" for health-related questions, "empowering users to be informed about and advocate for their health" - but makers insist it "does not replace a medical professional". ‌ "Think of it as a partner to help you understand results, ask the right questions in the time you have with providers, and weigh options as you make decisions," they said. What's more, OpenAI is making changes to promote a healthier relationship between users and ChatGPT. In a blog post it said: "AI can feel more responsive and personal than prior technologies, especially for vulnerable individuals experiencing mental or emotional distress." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! It said it would not give a definitive answer to questions such as, "Should I break up with my boyfriend?" Instead, it would "help you think it through - asking questions, weighing pros and cons". In the same vein, Prof Carissa Véliz of the Institute for Ethics in AI told the BBC that GPT-5 can only copy - rather than truly emulate - human reasoning abilities, and that the hype is more to do with making money. ‌ "These systems... haven't been able to be really profitable," she said. "There is a fear that we need to keep up the hype, or else the bubble might burst, and so it might be that it's mostly marketing." Features users get access to without paying The difference between free and paid access to GPT‑5 is usage volume. At some point on the free tier, your access to GPT-5 will reach the usage limit, and then you'll be kicked back to GPT-5 mini. Plus subscribers will get significantly higher usage volume before that happens. ‌ Writing improvements Nearly three years ago, ChatGPT introduced the world to generative AI, dazzling users with its ability to write humanlike prose and poetry. GPT-5's prose has a lot more rhythm and beat to it, according to TechRada r. "These improved writing capabilities mean that ChatGPT is better at helping you with everyday tasks like drafting and editing reports, emails, and memos," according to OpenAI. ChatGPT Voice With the free tier, you still only get limited access to ChatGPT-5's voice mode (along with file uploads, image creation, and data analysis), but you should get more access per day now than you did before. ‌ What used to be called 'Advanced voice mode' is now called 'ChatGPT voice'. OpenAI says that 'Standard Voice Mode retires on September 9, 2025, unifying all users on ChatGPT Voice'. ChatGPT Voice is better than before, with more natural-sounding conversations. Hit the voice button on the mobile app for ChatGPT to give it a go right now. New highlight colours You can now add accent colours to your chats in the Settings. These apply to elements in ChatGPT-5 like conversation bubbles and highlighted text. This is the first time colour has been used in the ChatGPT interface. ChatGPT-5 has better memory, reduces hallucinations, and as a free user, you'll get all that, too. The new version will be available to all 700 million users of ChatGPT, its makers OpenAI said.

Everything you need to know about the latest ChatGPT update

ChatGPT has had the robotic equivalent of a makeover – but experts aren't exactly impressed. OpenAI unveiled a new flagship artificial intelligence (AI) model, GPT-5, yesterday. The upgrade is available to all 700million users for free, though paid subscribers have fewer usage limits. 'Our smartest, fastest, most useful model yet, with built-in thinking that puts expert-level intelligence in everyone's hands,' the start-up said. The virtual assistant is now powered by a so-called reasoning model, which spends more time 'thinking' through a problem. OpenAI says the bot is far faster than before, is better at coding and is now more customizable. Users can change the chat colours and choose from preset 'personalities', like 'cynic', 'listener', and 'robot'. Voice interactions have also been improved, and pro users will will soon be able to connect Gmail, Calendar and Contacts directly to ChatGPT. To show off what this means, OpenAi compared GPT-5 to its previous model, GBT-4o, when it comes to writing poetry or a wedding toast. It can also build simple software apps, such as video games or pixel art-makers, from short text prompts. Health experts and officials have long cautioned people against using ChatGPT to ask medical questions, with the bot often citing fake scientific sources and giving shoddy diagnoses. OpenAI claims the new bot is its 'best model yet for health-related questions', though it stressed it does not replace health professionals. CEO Sam Altman said: 'GPT-5 is the first time that it really feels like talking to an expert in any topic, like a PhD-level expert.' Chatbots are increasingly used by people for everyday tasks, like writing out emails they meant to send two weeks ago or asking for advice. But this technology, called generative AI, has never been the best at ensuring that the information it provides is true. It happens so frequently that researchers have a word for it – hallucinating. The chatbots are called large language models (LLM) that learn by analysing texts on the internet to see how humans put words together. But what it can't learn is how to tell if something is true or not – as they try to guess the next word in a sequence of words, they sometimes generate phoney information as their patterns get muddled up with fake news. So OpenAI engineers carried out two tests to see how often ChatGPT hallucinated. The first, called Long Fact, involved asking the bot to answer questions about concepts or objects. They then asked it to make biographies of public figures, an examination called FActScore. OpenAI said that for both, GPT-5 makes about 45% fewer factual errors than its predecessor, GPT-40, and makes things up six times less than o3. A system card, which describes the algorithm's capabilities, says: 'We've taken steps to reduce GPT-5-thinking's propensity to deceive, cheat, or hack problems, though our mitigations are not perfect and more research is needed. 'In particular, we've trained the model to fail gracefully when posed with tasks that it cannot solve.' While OpenAI said this is a 'major leap' for the system, Michael Rovatsos, an AI professor at the University of Edinburgh, wasn't too impressed. He said: 'While it's too soon to tell, it sounds like no significant progress has been made on the core AI model, but instead, OpenAI is focusing on making it more useful by better controlling how it behaves through additional 'wrapper' technology. More Trending 'As an analogy, this would mean that what matters is not whether you have the best nuclear reactor, but whether you can actually build a safe and efficient power plant around it.' Edoardo Ponti, an assistant professor in Natural Language Processing at the Scottish university, said the upgrade is 'far from dramatic'. 'The presentation was partly weakened by flaws in the result reports and a hallucinated demo,' Ponti said. 'Moreover, it left a bit unclear where GPT-5 stands with respect to models from OpenAI's competitors.' New Instagram feature sparks privacy concerns but turning it off is simple

A new update from Instagram has left users in fear of their safety, however this update is similar to another social media platform - but why has this drew so much attention? Instagram have revealed a brand new feature, a real-time location map that lets people you follow see where you are when you're online, and it's already sparked backlash online. ‌ Although Meta says the feature is opt-in only, some users claim they've seen it appear without fully understanding how it works, or who can see them on it. The setting lives inside your Story, and only appears when you open the app - but that hasn't stopped people from calling it a privacy risk and expressing their fears. ‌ According to Meta, the new Instagram Map allows users to opt in to sharing their last active locations with friends of their choosing. The function can be turned off at any time. It comes after a warning everyone using Android must restart their phones now as 'critical' warning issued. ‌ 'From checking out stories from friends who've gone to a concert or finding a new place to hang out from a local creator's reel, there's content to help you and your friends connect with the world around you,' Meta said with the announcement. The latest update comes as part of a wider batch of new features including reposts and a new Friends tab on Reels - echoing what other platforms like TikTok and Snapchat have already been doing. But while some of the changes have gone under the radar, it's the map that's stirred the most reaction. ‌ Another update includes the "Friends" tab in Reels, which the company said will allow users to see "public content your friends have interacted with, or recommendations from Blends you've started, and easily start conversations about them." For more stories like this subscribe to our weekly newsletter, The Weekly Gulp, for a curated roundup of trending stories, poignant interviews, and viral lifestyle picks from The Mirror's Audience U35 team delivered straight to your inbox. ‌ The new feature, which Meta said began rolling out "earlier this year" before launching globally, can be found at the top of the Reels tab. "We're also rolling out controls for what's shown in the Friends tab, including the ability to hide your own likes and comments on reels, and to mute activity bubbles from specific people you follow," the company said. But users aren't phased by the the other updates, it's the map update that has posed a problem for most, with many taking to social media to air their concerns. ‌ One user on X said: 'Instagram lost they f**king mind adding that maps feature. What is with the obsession of having our location shared to the public? No thank you!' How to turn off Instagram Map If you want to stop Instagram from sharing your location through the new map feature, here's how to turn it off: Open Instagram Go to Settings and Activity Tap Story, Live and Location Select Location Sharing (Instagram Map) Set it to 'No one' You can also customise it to only share with Close Friends or a specific list, but turning it off completely means your location won't appear on the map at all. Another user created a step-by-step guide to help people turn it off, calling the feature 'freaky' and 'invasive,' especially for women and young people who are already navigating enough online safety concerns. ‌ A Meta spokesperson told The Mirror that the feature has only rolled out in the US so far and confirmed that the map feature won't be active unless you want it to be. They said in a statement: 'Instagram Map is off by default, and your live location is never shared unless you choose to turn it on. If you do, only people you follow back—or a private, custom list you select—can see your location.' Meta also confirmed the location sticker isn't real time location, but if you tag a location in your story, post or reel the content will appear on the map for 24 hours and with their supervision features, parents get notified when a teen starts to share their location and can turn it off at any time.
