All the confirmed closures across Scotland for major discounted retail chain

Daily Record4 hours ago
The Original Factory Shop is set to close down a total of 22 shops this year.
A major discounted retailer is set to make even more closures across the UK. Among the list are three more branches on the Scottish high street.

The Original Factory Shop (TOFS), a staple since the 60s, has been undergoing restructuring plans recently that has shuttered a total of 10 branches across Scotland, England and Wales.

It comes amidst a wave of closures hitting the high street recently, with Poundland, New Look and River Island also announcing closures across Scotland.

The budget chain has already made a series of closures across the country, with its Perth, Peterhead and Arbroath stores shutting for good back in June.
Now it has been revealed that stores based in Blairgowrie, Nairn and Kinross will also be closing down, although the dates have yet to be confirmed by the retailer.

Earlier this year, we reported that the firm's Cupar-based store, which closed on July 27, had launched a massive closing down sale in store, with price cuts across almost every product category.
Shoppers took to Facebook to share images of the sale that included 30 percent off clothing items for men and women.
Meanwhile, household and cleaning products were spotted on offer for 10 percent less, with deals also found across a range of confectionary.

The Sun reports that the firm is set to close down a total off 22 shops this year after being bought over by private equity firm Modella Capital, the same firm that bought over WHSmith and Hobbycraft.

After purchasing the discounted chain in February, Modella then drafted up a restructuring plan to renegotiate rents at 88 The Original Factory Shop stores.

To help further save the firm from collapse, Modella also drafted up plans to initiate a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) at the end of April.
A CVA is often used by companies to prevent insolvency, which could otherwise force stores to close or trigger the collapse of the entire business.
As part of the restructuring plans, TOFS is said to have previously told the Press and Journal that several "loss-making stores will have to close."

First opened on the high street in 1969, The Original Factory Shop initially sold soap manufactured by a factory that was operated by its founder Peter Black.
The firm now offers a range of fashion, homewares, toys and personal care products from the chain's own lines, branded products or cut label products from a high street chain or supermarket.

Scotrail peak fares to be scrapped with Edinburgh to Glasgow train journeys almost half the price

In a first for rail travel anywhere in Britain, peak fares are set to be scrapped for good for customers travelling on ScotRail services from September 1. The policy announced by the Scottish Government in May this year is aiming to make train fares simpler, more flexible, and provide better value for money for rail users. A further aim of the change is to get more people to leave the car at home and travel by rail instead. Removing peak fares will mean significant savings for customers across the country, with some journeys set to reduce by almost 50 per cent – including those between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad From Monday, September 1, customers will pay the same fare no matter what time they travel, or the day of the week. Examples of the massive savings to be made include Edinburgh to Glasgow train fares dropping by 48 per cent, down by £15.80 to just £16.80 for a return, while Edinburgh to Inverkeithing return train fares will drop by £5.20 (41 per cent) down to £7.40. There are some routes where no off-peak fare exists because the same fare is already available at any time of the day, and as such, customers will not see any change in those areas. Customers can check the ScotRail website or the app, to see off-peak fares for their route, and get set for savings when peak fares are removed. The website and app will be updated by Friday, August 22, when the peak fare options will be removed for any tickets for travel from September 1 onwards. Picture: PA As part of the move to simpler and more flexible fares, a number of other tickets will also be updated. Season Tickets will remain at their current pricing until September 27. For regular travellers, this represents a saving of at least 40 per cent compared to purchasing five Anytime Day Return tickets at pre- September 1 prices. This discount was part of a 12-month offer launched in September 2024. Flexipass tickets will have adjusted pricing from September 1 to ensure they continue to offer a saving compared to buying multiple Anytime Single or Return tickets, while still providing flexibility for part-time or hybrid commuters. Super Off-Peak Day Return tickets will be withdrawn, as the removal of peak fares means customers now benefit from great value fares all day, every day. And, Railcards, concessions, and enhanced discounts will continue to be available, with most remaining valid for travel after 9.15am, in line with existing conditions. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The significant change to the fare structure will support the Scottish Government's ambition to achieve net zero, providing more people with the opportunity to use trains as their primary form of transport. Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, said: 'Public ownership has created the opportunity to deliver a railway which is run for the benefit of the nation. ScotRail is one of the fastest growing operators, with one of the best passenger satisfaction rates and we are building even further on this success by removing peak fares for good. 'We want more people to choose to travel by public transport for work, study and leisure but we know that many are still struggling with cost-of-living pressures. By removing peak fares, we are making ticketing more simple and more straightforward while at the same time supporting a shift towards sustainable public transport, protecting the climate, and saving people money.' ScotRail was recently ranked as one of the best train operating companies for customer satisfaction. With an overall satisfaction of 91 per cent, ScotRail is performing better than all other large operators in Britain. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Speaking about the scrapping of peak fares in Scotland, Joanne Maguire, ScotRail managing director, said: 'This is fantastic news, not only for our existing customers, but for everyone across the country considering rail travel for their commute or leisure journeys. 'Travelling by train remains one of the most convenient ways to get around, and with simpler, more affordable fares, we hope to see many more people choose ScotRail.'

Labour eye 'utterly reckless' bonfire of nuclear energy regulations

A taskforce commissioned by the UK Government to look into nuclear regulations has recommended a 'radical reset' to speed up projects. Fears have been sparked after the taskforce criticised the 'unnecessarily slow, inefficient and costly' system which governs new nuclear projects. Its final report is expected to focus on tackling what the UK Government described as a 'culture of risk aversion' in nuclear energy regulation. Earlier this year, the UK Government announced it was scrapping a raft of nuclear regulations, including changing the rules so that new projects could be built across the entirety of England and Wales. New nuclear projects are de facto banned in Scotland. (Image: Getty) But critics have accused the Government of 'cutting corners' with the dangerous energy source. Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater said: 'This seems utterly reckless. Nuclear energy is extremely costly and insecure, and it leaves a long and toxic legacy for future generations. 'The last thing we should be doing is cutting corners, especially when it comes to something so dangerous.' She added that nuclear energy was 'totally unnecessary when it comes to our environmental objectives'. The Scottish Greens and the SNP have previously argued that Scotland's natural resources mean that investment is better directed into the renewables sector. READ MORE: Pod of 23 whales found dead on Scottish beach after mass stranding Slater added: 'We have immense renewable resources that can power our way into a greener future if our governments are willing to invest. 'Instead Labour is determined to throw billions at a toxic and dated industry rather than seizing the opportunity to build a modern green energy sector that works for people and planet.' But the UK Government insists that nuclear energy is safe and vital to reaching net zero emissions. Miatta Fahnbulleh, the Minister for Energy Consumers, said: 'For too long, big British infrastructure projects have been held back by needless bureaucracy. 'It's time for a new approach to getting nuclear projects off the ground more quickly, and at a lower cost. 'We look forward to working with the expert taskforce to modernise outdated regulations so we can unlock growth, jobs and energy security for the British people.' John Fingleton, head of the nuclear taskforce, said: 'Nuclear energy is safe and reliable and can contribute to net zero goals. It is also vital to the UK's strategic deterrent. 'However, over recent decades, nuclear regulation has become more complex and costly without always delivering commensurate safety and environmental benefits. 'Our interim report identifies our main concerns with the current system which we think is not fit for purpose.'
