Short-handed Fever suffer another blow as Sophie Cunningham sustains season-ending injury
She was hurt during Sunday's victory at Connecticut.
Team officials did not provide details about the injury, the third season-ending one Indiana has experienced in August.
Guard Sydney Colson tore the ACL in her left knee on Aug. 7 in a game at Phoenix. Guard Aari McDonald broke a bone in her right foot in the same game.
And two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark still has not played since injuring her right groin in mid-July. Coach Stephanie White has not provided a timetable for Clark's return other than to say the Fever hope that Clark returns before the regular-season finale Sept. 9 against Minnesota.
With so many key players out, the outspoken Cunningham played a key role in helping Indiana stay in the playoff mix. She was averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals.
Indiana also announced it has signed Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract. The six-year veteran was averaging 5.0 points and 2.7 assists in six games with the Los Angeles Sparks. She also has played with Phoenix and Washington during her career. The Fever also released guard Kyra Lambert.

Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, she was getting ready for her mixed doubles match at the U.S. Open in New York City. It's been a quick turnaround. 'This was the most extreme situation and most extreme schedule I've had after a title win,' Swiatek, currently ranked second in the world, said Tuesday afternoon. 'An hour and a half after the match, we already went to catch a plane.' But that didn't slow her down. Swiatek and Casper Ruud, her mixed doubles partner, won both of their Tuesday matches to secure a spot in Wednesday's mixed doubles quarterfinal, where they'll be competing for a spot in the $1 million title game. 'Actually, it's kind of nice to have another task, and to not let yourself be lazy but really focus on the next exciting thing,' she said about the quick turnaround. He was secretly chatting with Swiatek's team throughout the match — 'she doesn't know this,' Ruud said with a laugh — and wondering about their doubles match the next morning. 'I can't lie. I was a little concerned,' he said about watching Swiatek continue to progress through the Cincinnati Open's rounds. He exited the tournament in the first round. '(But) she was here doing her warmup at 10 a.m. … I look at Iga and I'm like, 'This is determination, like I've never seen it before.'' The quick turnaround from Cincinnati is new for singles players at the U.S. Open. With this year's reimagined mixed doubles draw, which includes top singles players for the first time, the week that was usually recovery time is now playing time. Carlos Alcaraz, the men's champion in Cincinnati, faced a similar turnaround to his afternoon doubles match with Emma Raducanu. He did have a few more hours on each end, given the scheduling of both tournaments. Alcaraz was knocked out of mixed doubles Tuesday afternoon, but Swiatek and Ruud will be back in action Wednesday. In the release of the 2025-2026 NBA schedule, the San Antonio Spurs find themselves with 22 nationally televised games, including seven on ESPN and five on NBC, which will carry the NBA for the first time since 2002. Including that contest, in which the Spurs will look to break a two-game Opening Night losing streak to the Mavs, five of the Spurs' six matchups come against teams that missed the playoffs last season. The exception comes against the Miami Heat, who finished as the East's eighth seed. Even after games against the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets on Nov. 5 and 6, San Antonio will go through another stretch in which it will mostly face opponents that either didn't qualify for the 2025 postseason or were one of the lower seeds. It's not until the days following Thanksgiving when they'll face the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers that the Spurs will take on very good competition in succession. 45+ wins will get San Antonio into playoffs A favorable 2025 portion of the schedule will help pad the Spurs' record going into 2026. For instance, San Antonio doesn't face the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder until a home-and-home that'll be capped on Christmas Day in one of the team's two games this season on ABC. Like last year, the Rodeo Road Trip in February will not only include the NBA All-Star break, but also two games in Austin as part of the organization's outreach to Texas' capital city. It's a reality that helps lessen the grind for what essentially amounts to a month away from the Alamo City. Of the nine opponents they'll face in this particular stretch, only the Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks advanced past the first round last year. All told, the Silver and Black have enough opportunities to start well enough to sustain what should prove a final month of the season. A healthy De'Aaron Fox, reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle and Harper, the second overall pick in the draft, will lend more than enough support for Wemby to lead the Spurs over 45 wins and into the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

Led by All-Star center Victor Wembanyama, 2025 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and the second overall pick in this year's NBA draft, guard Dylan Harper, the Spurs could make a significant stride in 2025-26.
