Plans for 180 homes to be built on edge of Malvern

BBC News7 hours ago
Plans have been unveiled for 80 homes to be built on the edge of a Worcestershire town.Land south of Guarlford Road and east of Mill Lane in Malvern has been earmarked for the development, which is being proposed by developer Bloor Homes.Bosses said the 35-acre site was currently used as common land, while part of it was designated as a local wildlife site and a site of regional wildlife importance. Bloor has asked Malvern Hills District Council to decide whether an environmental assessment is required, but also stressed the location was a sustainable one with good access to shops and transport links.
The site is within walk or cycling distance of shops and other services in Barnards Green, they said. The plans are at an early stage, but Bloor said an assessment by highways consultants found the proposed estate would not have a "severe" impact on local roads.Neighbour Linda Connor said there were already "plenty of new houses being built" in the area."I don't think it is appropriate to build all over our countryside, spoiling views and walks etc, therefore spoiling the countryside and the originality of this lovely old town," she said. The developer said it would consult with residents on the plans over the coming weeks. They would review comments submitted and amend the scheme or respond to comments as part of its planning application, Bloor bosses added.

Guernsey chef may look to England for crab

A Guernsey chef has said he may have to import crab from England after an increase in octopuses which prey on the octopuses, usually found in the Mediterranean, are being found in lobster and crab pots off the coastline, leading to a shortage of Mason, head chef at Le Nautique restaurant in Guernsey said the trend could be here to stay and dishes were being adapted to include octopus."We're having to get whatever we can crab-wise, and eventually I think we'll only be getting it from England at this rate." Environmental management The common octopus, octopus vulgaris, thrive in habitats like reefs, rocky ledges, and seagrass beds according to may have moved into the area because conditions have improved, perhaps due to greater food availability or improved habitat quality from better environmental management, said Dr Emma Sheehan, associate professor of marine ecology at the University of Plymouth."Another factor could be higher survival rates, especially in early life stages, possibly due to milder winters. Reduced fishing pressure may also be playing a role."Dr Bryce Stewart, a marine ecologist with the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth, said the octopus bloom was likely to be the result of unusually warm sea temperatures and shifting ocean currents, both driven by global climate change.

I used to get riotously drunk with my brilliant sister-in-law... but now she's become a tradwife. This is how it's ruined our relationship

'Don't worry about bringing anything, except maybe a pudding. Oh, and it's just us, so don't go to any trouble,' my sister-in-law, Isabel, says breezily when we confirm plans for a long overdue summer barbecue. But then we arrive to find their vast kitchen covered with the sort of spread that wouldn't look out of place in Good Housekeeping magazine, and my heart sinks. I sheepishly hand over the slightly soggy boxed cheesecake and tub of creme fraiche I've picked up from the Co-op.
