Rajnath to attend SCO Defence ministers' meeting in China
New Delhi, June 24 (UNI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence ministers' meeting in Qingdao, China, where he will outline India's vision for global peace and security and emphasise the need for collective action to combat terrorism.
The Defence Minister will lead a high-level Indian delegation from June 25 to 26, a Defence Ministry statement said on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the defence ministers are expected to discuss a number of issues, including regional and international peace and security, counter-terrorism efforts and cooperation among the Ministries of Defence of SCO member states.
Rajnath Singh is expected to highlight India's continued commitment to the principles and mandate of the SCO, outline India's vision towards achieving greater international peace and security, call for joint and consistent efforts to eliminate terrorism and extremism in the region, and stress on the need for greater trade, economic cooperation and connectivity within SCO.
He will also hold bilateral meetings with the defence ministers of some participating countries, including China and Russia, on the sidelines of the meeting.
India attaches special importance to SCO in promoting multi-lateralism, political, security, economic and people-to-people interactions in the region. SCO pursues its policy based on the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity of nations, non-interference in internal affairs, mutual respect, understanding and equality of all member-states.
SCO is an inter-governmental organisation established in 2001. India became a full member in 2017 and assumed the rotating Chairmanship in 2023. The SCO membership includes Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus, besides India.
China has assumed the Chair of the SCO for 2025 under the theme 'Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move'.

NIA takes custody of top ULFA(I) leader Rupam Asom, reopens long-dormant insurgency cases
Guwahati, June 24 (UNI) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken custody of United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) brigadier Rupam Asom, also known by his real name Kant Borah, intensifying its probe. The senior ULFA(I) commander, apprehended by Tinsukia police earlier this week, was handed over to the NIA after preliminary questioning. He is currently being interrogated at the agency's Sonapur office near Guwahati. Officials confirmed that he has been undergoing sustained questioning over the past three days. Rupam Asom is believed to have played a key role in multiple incidents of armed violence, including murder, abduction, and attacks on security forces, particularly in Upper Assam. His name figures prominently in several NIA case files, many of which had gone cold due to his prolonged period of hiding in camps across the Indo-Myanmar border. Sources within the security establishment suggest that his capture marks a critical breakthrough in the agency's multi-pronged crackdown on insurgent groups operating in the Northeast. With his formal custody now secured, the NIA has reopened several stalled investigations related to the outfit's violent activities over the past decade. The agency is especially interested in uncovering details about ULFA(I)'s transborder linkages, especially with other Northeast-based insurgent groups and networks in Myanmar and China. His interrogation, officials believe, could shed light on arms procurement routes, financial channels, and the group's recent recruitment drives targeting vulnerable youth in Assam's rural districts. Though the NIA has yet to formally announce the specific charges under which Rupam Asom will be produced in court, officials said new developments are expected soon. Operation Sindhu: IAF brings home 268 Indian nationals from Israel
New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Tuesday brought back 286 Indian nationals, who were residing in Israel, from Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, bringing the total number of citizens coming home from Israel to 594. Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs L. Murugan welcomed the Indian nationals upon their arrival in New Delhi. This is the second IAF flight bringing back the Indians from Israel. Earlier in the day, an IAF flight carrying 165 Indians had arrived in the National Capital. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) took to X and posted, "268 Indian nationals who returned in the third flight from Israel were received by MoS L. Murugan. The IAF C-17 flight from Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, landed in Delhi at 1100 hrs on June 24. 594 Indians have returned so far from Israel as part of Operation Sindhu." The IAF joined in the operations with its C-17 aircraft to evacuate the Indian nationals and the citizens of friendly nations, including Nepal and Sri Lanka, from war-hit Israel and bring them back home to safety. Earlier in the day, before the IAF aircraft landed in India, the MEA announced that the Israel leg of Operation Sindhu started on Monday, June 23, via Jordan, marking its first successful repatriation flight, with 161 citizens landing in New Delhi from Amman on Tuesday morning. "We are closely monitoring the situation and are committed to providing all possible and necessary assistance to our citizens in Iran and Israel. Under Operation Sindhu, all the nationals are arriving safely," the MoS added. Meanwhile, a similar evacuation process continued in Iran, and so far, according to the MEA, 2295 Indian nationals have been brought back home. The Government of India has launched Operation Sindhu, a strategic evacuation initiative to repatriate Indian nationals stranded in both countries.
