
Why ‘Healthy' Food Labels Fool Even Savvy Shoppers
— Even health-conscious WebMD readers can be fooled at the grocery store.
Sure, you read the Nutrition Facts and compare products. But your brain is also absorbing cues from the food packaging, and those cues influence your choices more than you think.
We are all 'cognitive misers,' said marketing expert Dipayan Biswas, PhD, a professor at the University of South Florida Muma College of Business. 'We only use our brain as much as we have to. It's too much work to process and figure out if something is healthy or unhealthy.'
So when you see that picture of fruits and vegetables on the package, your brain automatically associates the food with being healthy, even if you don't realize it.
The 'Neuromarketing' Tactics at Work
Of course, you probably expect food marketing tricks — but what you may not realize is how much effort goes into them or how easily even savvy shoppers can be influenced.
Food purchased for eating at home is a trillion-dollar industry. With so much money at stake, companies deeply research how to sell food to us. 'They may be wiser than academics who study marketing,' said Christina Roberto, PhD, director of the Psychology of Eating and Consumer Health (PEACH) lab at the University of Pennsylvania. 'They put the resources in to figure out how to make things appealing.'
Some resources go into neuromarketing — using neuroscience to examine what we see and think. Eye-tracking, for instance, was used to see which health claim captured more attention on yogurt packaging. Do we linger on granola-bar claims about sweeteners, antioxidants, and genetic modification? That's been studied, too. (Years ago, Frito-Lay used an electroencephalogram, or EEG, to discover that customers actually enjoy the messiness of orange Cheetos dust. It led to an award-winning ad campaign.)
The food industry pays for some nutrition research, and what do you know: When funding comes from a food company, results often look better. One analysis examined all the original research published in top nutrition and dietetics journals in 2018. Of the studies with some kind of industry funding, more than half benefited the funder. But less than 10% of articles without corporate money were favorable to industry interests.
Luring You With Buzzwords
Manufacturers know the appeal of buzzwords like 'natural.' It's unregulated and has no specific meaning, but your brain doesn't care. Even if you know this, a subtle message gets through.
'If you see a potato chip with the claim 'all natural,' you think that potato chip has fewer calories than the same bag of potato chips without that claim — even though 'natural' doesn't say anything about calories,' said Anna Grummon, PhD, director of Stanford University's Food Policy Lab. 'It's not that it says low calories or low fat. It just says all natural.'
In studies without food industry funding, Grummon examined how claims like 'healthy,' 'high fiber,' and 'low fat' influence consumer behavior.
'We tend to buy more of those products,' even when compared with products that don't have the labels but are nutritionally identical, she said. 'In experiments, if we manipulate whether the product has the claim or not, people like the product more when it does. They think it's healthier and are more likely to buy it.'
Boasting about specific nutrients — think 'high protein' or 'low-sodium' — is another way companies can mislead while still being honest. That one nutrient doesn't necessarily mean a product is good for you. Same goes for labels that tout the lack of a nutrient, like gluten.
'That's an issue that doesn't affect over 90% of people, but people see gluten-free and think, 'It's healthy for me,'' Biswas said. 'Those buzzwords get us, and those words change over time.'
Companies spend millions of dollars to figure out which buzzwords suit the dietary zeitgeist.
'Companies are happy to tout the healthy aspects of their product, to say, 'This is high in fiber, low in saturated fat,'' Grummon said. 'They don't want to disclose less healthy aspects of their product. Maybe their breakfast cereal is low in saturated fat but quite high in sugar.'
If a food manufacturer can convince you to buy an item using a health claim, they may win twice over. 'People indulge more if they think a food is healthy,' he said. 'So there's a double whammy: You're not only eating something unhealthy, you're [also] eating more of it.'
Tricking Parents About Kids' Food
Packaging on kids' foods often uses pictures and words that suggest the contents are good for growing children — when in reality, the products are often full of added sugars and ultra-processed ingredients.
Consider 'toddler milk,' a kind of powdered drink that supposedly benefits toddlers' development. In 2022, Americans purchased $1.7 billion worth of the stuff. The American Academy of Pediatrics says these products are no better than cow's milk.
'They've essentially created an entire category of food called toddler milks, and they're marketing them as if toddlers need specialized drinks,' Roberto said. 'But these are sugary drinks toddlers shouldn't be consuming.'
Then there are toddler-specific, ultra-processed snacks, like Gerber's Organic Lil' Crunchies White Cheddar Broccoli. The label features multiple nutrition-oriented phrases like 'made with real veggies,' 'baked snack,' 'made with beans,' and '2 g of plant protein per serving.' Other positive messages include 'baby-led friendly,' 'non-GMO ingredients,' and a USDA organic seal. It's enough to make you think this highly processed food is better for your toddler than actual broccoli.
Fruit drinks, which usually contain some kind of added sweetener, are another minefield of misleading statements. One study, in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, analyzed labeling on fruit drinks bought by parents of young children. Of the 2,000-plus drinks included in the sample, 97% included at least one nutrition-related health claim on the front, like 'natural flavors' or 'good source of vitamin C.'
'From a nutrition point of view, we don't need these drinks,' Grummon said. 'They're basically sugar water, and they're often marketed with claims that we have shown in research can deceive people.'
What's Allowed and What Isn't
The front of food packages is less monitored than you might think. Only three kinds of claims are regulated by the FDA, and two offer substantial wiggle room:
Health claims that link specific foods or nutrients to health conditions are closely regulated. Only seven have been approved for labels. These include the link between calcium and vitamin D and reduced risk of osteoporosis; dietary fat and decreased cancer risk; and fiber-containing fruits, vegetables, and grain products and the lower risk of certain cancers. Other approved claims include fiber's role in reducing coronary heart disease risk, the potential of fruits and vegetables to lower cancer risk, the link between saturated fat and cholesterol and coronary heart disease, and the connection between sodium intake and high blood pressure. All seven have loads of scientific evidence behind them.
Nutrient content claims can use words like 'free,' 'high' or 'low,' 'more,' 'good source of,' and 'reduced' to describe a particular nutrient, according to detailed guidelines. This can be misleading, though. For instance, 'cholesterol free' sounds good but has no meaning on something like peanut butter because cholesterol is only found in animal products. All peanut butter is cholesterol-free.
Structure and function claims give food manufacturers the most leeway. They describe how a nutrient in the food supports your health, like 'calcium builds strong bones.' But there's much less oversight here — the FDA doesn't require companies to provide proof or even notify them about the claims being made.
For more than a decade, some food manufacturers have voluntarily used a front-of-package label designed by industry trade groups, called Facts Up Front. Consumer advocacy groups say it muddies the waters because it's based on the percent Daily Value of a nutrient. That percentage reflects a 2,000-calorie per day diet, but most Americans eat more or less, so the numbers may not apply.
Currently the FDA is working on a design for proposed new front-of-package nutrition labeling. The required label would interpret the sodium, saturated fat, and sugar content, listing each as 'low,' 'medium,' or 'high.' Experts like these interpretive labels because they help consumers understand healthiness at a glance, and they've been proven effective in other countries.
'Chile has done this well. They have a very evidence-based label,' Roberto said. 'It's a stop-sign warning that tells consumers when products are high in sodium, saturated fat, added sugar, and calories. I like the symbol they use because it's leveraging our natural associations with an octagon stop sign.'
She worries about one aspect of the FDA's proposed plan: listing all three nutrients, which isn't always applicable — like, for instance, with soda.
'It's low in saturated fat and sodium but high in added sugar. That's a very confusing message,' she said. 'It's like pulling up to a traffic light that's red and green at the same time. Just say high in sugar and leave out the not-relevant saturated fat and sodium.'
Get Savvy (or Savvier)
With all this conflicting, often deceptive information, what's a smart consumer to do?
Take all claims with a grain of salt. 'You should be skeptical of any kind of claim you see on food packaging,' Roberto said. 'As much as people say nutrition science is complicated, it's also true that we generally know what to eat.'
Focus on three key nutrients. Saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar all have voluminous research to show they can harm your health. Keep all three as low as possible.
Ignore claims like 'made with real fruit' or 'fat free.' Manufacturers often cherry-pick a single thing to trumpet on the front, which masks more negative attributes. 'Made with' has no official meaning — the amount could be minuscule, and the claim would technically be true. Products that are fat free often have high levels of added sugar. Flavor has to come from somewhere. 'Practically all sugary beverages have zero fat,' Biswas said, 'but they all have extremely high calories.'

If you're heading outdoors this summer, it pays to know the difference between poison ivy, poison oak and other rash-producing plants that will leave you itching and scratching — or worse. Most Michiganders are familiar with poison ivy in its various forms, but plants such as poison sumac grow in swampy areas, and invasive giant hogweed and wild parsnip can cause more significant, long-lasting health problems, according to state's Invasive Species Program. "It can be difficult to determine whether you're looking at hogweed, hemlock or parsnip, but all of these plants have several things in common: contact may cause unpleasant, potentially deadly, reactions," the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service said. Poison ivy, poison sumac and poison oak can cause a red, bumpy rash from its transferred oils called urushiol. Ingesting other native Michigan plants, the nightshade plant for example, can be deadly in small doses, according to Michigan State University's Extension. As residents explore the outdoors, here are six poisonous or toxic plants to identify and avoid: The plants may be identifiable by their large size — they can grow up to 14 feet tall. Hogweed is native to Asia and typically grows in open areas, but can be spotted in various habitats, according to Michigan's Invasive Species Program, a joint effort of the departments of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; Natural Resources; and Agriculture and Rural Development. Hodgweed is an invasive species in Michigan, but has become established in the state, the website notes. The plants contain toxins called furanocoumarins. These are mostly found in the sap as well as throughout the plant's tissues, according to WebMD. If you come in contact with the plant's sap, it can cause an allergic reaction called photo dermatitis or photo sensitivity: Your skin becomes sensitive to sunlight and may blister when exposed to light. WebMD says you can develop symptoms in as little as 15 minutes. Severe cases can cause scarring for up to six years. Getting the sap in your eyes can cause permanent blindness. "The toxin is most problematic if it gets into your eyes. Immediately wash your eyes for 15 minutes straight if you think that they've been exposed," WebMD says. Here's how to identify: White flowers in an umbrella-shaped cluster up to 2.5 feet across. Plant is 7 to 14 feet tall. Stems are green with purple splotches and visible, coarse, white hairs. Leaves are up to 5 feet wide, lobed and deeply incised. In Michigan, there are two types of poison ivy growing throughout yards and forests: eastern poison ivy, which grows throughout the Lower Peninsula, and western poison ivy, which grows mostly in northern areas, including the Upper Peninsula, according to Michigan State University's Extension. All poison ivy contains an oil called urushiol in the leaves, stems and roots of the plant, the Mayo Clinic said. When touched, the oil creates an allergic reactions in the form of a red rash. All poison ivy (western and eastern species) has certain qualities, MSU Extension and the American Museum of Natural History say, including: The stalk of the middle leaflet is much longer than the stalks of the two side leaflets. Surface of the leaves can be glossy or dull. There are three leaflets, and the edges can be smooth or coarsely toothed. Some have a prominent "thumb-like" lobe. The leaf arrangement alternates. In the fall, leaves turn turn red with some yellow. Greenish flowers appear with five petals about 3 millimeters in diameter. Flowers appear in loose branching clusters and arise from where the branch or leaf attaches to the stem. Berries/fruits appear in loose drooping clusters and contain a single seed, and are hard and whitish. Western poison ivy grows upright and does not have aerial roots. The plants grow in patches on the ground. Eastern poison ivy grows as either a plant on the ground or as a vine on trees or buildings with aerial roots to secure itself around trees or other objects. Poison oak is a relative to poison ivy that contains the same oils and is extremely common in California. There are two types of poison oak plants, Pacific poison oak and Atlantic poison oak. Pacific poison oak grows in the western U.S. in a wide range of habitats ranging from grasslands to forests. Atlantic poison oak grows in southeastern U.S. and is usually found in open woodlands and sandy thickets. Neither type typically grows in Michigan. Poison oak's leaves resemble an oak leaf, but at times have jagged edges, according to the Santa Lucia Conservancy, based in Carmel, California. Like poison ivy, its leaves have a alternate leaf pattern. It can grow as a shrub, bush or vine. In the spring, poison oak's leaves appear shiny with reddish or green colors that can curl inward. As the plant grows, the leaves increase in size and are bright to dark green. In late spring they bloom small, star-shaped, yellow flowers in clusters on its stem. Like giant hogwood, wild parsnip is an invasive species in Michigan and has been detected in the state, according to Michigan's Invasive Species Program. The plant is a flowering herb that grows up to 5 feet tall with yellow-to-green flowers shaped like umbrellas that grow in clusters. It has toothed leaves with leaflets that grow across from each other from the smooth, green stem. The flowers bloom in June and July. When touched the plant's harmful chemicals can cause a rash and blisters, and can cause the infected area to become sensitive to sunlight. "Wild parsnip spreads aggressively through seeds carried by wind, water and equipment. Stem, leaves, and flowers contain chemicals that can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight and cause severe rash or blistering. Plant chemicals are known to reduce weight gain and fertility in livestock that eat wild parsnip," according to the invasive species website. If you find wild parsnip growing in Michigan, state officials urge you to report the sighting through the Invasive Species Information Network online reporting tool. A relative to poison ivy, poison sumac is a flowering shrub or woody plant that contains the same oil. However, it is considered more allergenic, causing a very inflamed, painful and itchy rash. Poison sumac has alternate compound leaves with pointed, shiny leaflets and a red stem. The woody plant grows to 15 feet tall and has bark that is a dull gray. Sumac has a red stem sprouting from a grey bark stem. In June, clusters of small, green flowers bloom, based on MSU's Department of Entomology. Poison sumac is typically found in fens and indicates wet soil, MSU said. It can be found in swampy areas throughout most of the Lower Peninsula. Poison hemlock can be extremely poisonous to animals and humans if ingested. All parts of the plant are poisonous and made up of toxic compounds called "conine, g-coniceine and related piperidine alkaloids," according to the U.S. Agricultural Research Service. This plant is also referred to as deadly hemlock, poison parsley, spotted hemlock, European hemlock, and California or Nebraska fern. It blooms in the spring (when they are particularly toxic) throughout the U.S. Here are some ways to identify the plant: White flowers that grow in small erect clusters — each flower develops into a green fruit with seeds. Grows along fence lines, in irrigation ditches, and in other moist waste places. Leaves are delicate, like parsley, and have a white taproot — the main root of the plant. Can grow to be 6.5 to almost 10 feet tall. Hollow stem usually marked with small purple spots. If anxiety is in my brain, why is my heart pounding? A psychiatrist explains the neuroscience and physiology of fear
Heart in your throat. Butterflies in your stomach. Bad gut feeling. These are all phrases many people use to describe fear and anxiety. You have likely felt anxiety inside your chest or stomach, and your brain usually doesn't hurt when you're scared. Many cultures tie cowardice and bravery more to the heart or the guts than to the brain. But science has traditionally seen the brain as the birthplace and processing site of fear and anxiety. Then why and how do you feel these emotions in other parts of your body? I am a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who researches and treats fear and anxiety. In my book 'Afraid,' I explain how fear works in the brain and the body and what too much anxiety does to the body. Research confirms that while emotions do originate in your brain, it's your body that carries out the orders. While your brain evolved to save you from a falling rock or speeding predator, the anxieties of modern life are often a lot more abstract. Fifty-thousand years ago, being rejected by your tribe could mean death, but not doing a great job on a public speech at school or at work doesn't have the same consequences. Your brain, however, might not know the difference. There are a few key areas of the brain that are heavily involved in processing fear. When you perceive something as dangerous, whether it's a gun pointed at you or a group of people looking unhappily at you, these sensory inputs are first relayed to the amygdala. This small, almond-shaped area of the brain located near your ears detects salience, or the emotional relevance of a situation and how to react to it. When you see something, it determines whether you should eat it, attack it, run away from it or have sex with it. Threat detection is a vital part of this process, and it has to be fast. Early humans did not have much time to think when a lion was lunging toward them. They had to act quickly. For this reason, the amygdala evolved to bypass brain areas involved in logical thinking and can directly engage physical responses. For example, seeing an angry face on a computer screen can immediately trigger a detectable response from the amygdala without the viewer even being aware of this reaction. The hippocampus is near and tightly connected to the amygdala. It's involved in memorizing what is safe and what is dangerous, especially in relation to the environment – it puts fear in context. For example, seeing an angry lion in the zoo and in the Sahara both trigger a fear response in the amygdala. But the hippocampus steps in and blocks this response when you're at the zoo because you aren't in danger. The prefrontal cortex, located above your eyes, is mostly involved in the cognitive and social aspects of fear processing. For example, you might be scared of a snake until you read a sign that the snake is nonpoisonous or the owner tells you it's their friendly pet. Although the prefrontal cortex is usually seen as the part of the brain that regulates emotions, it can also teach you fear based on your social environment. For example, you might feel neutral about a meeting with your boss but immediately feel nervous when a colleague tells you about rumors of layoffs. Many prejudices like racism are rooted in learning fear through tribalism. If your brain decides that a fear response is justified in a particular situation, it activates a cascade of neuronal and hormonal pathways to prepare you for immediate action. Some of the fight-or-flight response – like heightened attention and threat detection – takes place in the brain. But the body is where most of the action happens. Several pathways prepare different body systems for intense physical action. The motor cortex of the brain sends rapid signals to your muscles to prepare them for quick and forceful movements. These include muscles in the chest and stomach that help protect vital organs in those areas. That might contribute to a feeling of tightness in your chest and stomach in stressful conditions. The sympathetic nervous system is the gas pedal that speeds up the systems involved in fight or flight. Sympathetic neurons are spread throughout the body and are especially dense in places like the heart, lungs and intestines. These neurons trigger the adrenal gland to release hormones like adrenaline that travel through the blood to reach those organs and increase the rate at which they undergo the fear response. To assure sufficient blood supply to your muscles when they're in high demand, signals from the sympathetic nervous system increase the rate your heart beats and the force with which it contracts. You feel both increased heart rate and contraction force in your chest, which is why you may connect the feeling of intense emotions to your heart. In your lungs, signals from the sympathetic nervous system dilate airways and often increase your breathing rate and depth. Sometimes this results in a feeling of shortness of breath. As digestion is the last priority during a fight-or-flight situation, sympathetic activation slows down your gut and reduces blood flow to your stomach to save oxygen and nutrients for more vital organs like the heart and the brain. These changes to your gastrointestinal system can be perceived as the discomfort linked to fear and anxiety. All bodily sensations, including those visceral feelings from your chest and stomach, are relayed back to the brain through the pathways via the spinal cord. Your already anxious and highly alert brain then processes these signals at both conscious and unconscious levels. The insula is a part of the brain specifically involved in conscious awareness of your emotions, pain and bodily sensations. The prefrontal cortex also engages in self-awareness, especially by labeling and naming these physical sensations, like feeling tightness or pain in your stomach, and attributing cognitive value to them, like 'this is fine and will go away' or 'this is terrible and I am dying.' These physical sensations can sometimes create a loop of increasing anxiety as they make the brain feel more scared of the situation because of the turmoil it senses in the body. Although the feelings of fear and anxiety start in your brain, you also feel them in your body because your brain alters your bodily functions. Emotions take place in both your body and your brain, but you become aware of their existence with your brain. Trouble sleeping? 'Moon breathing' can reduce anxiety at night, says expert
Even when you've created the perfect environment for sleep and are exhausted from a busy day, sleep can be elusive if you experience nighttime anxiety — which can include trouble relaxing, night sweats, panic attacks and increased waking during the night. But what if we told you that an ancient yogic breathing technique could be a tool in your arsenal to challenge it? Moon breathing is a term that has become more popular more recently thanks to social media platforms like TikTok. This breathing technique is focused on using your left nostril, and can lead to a range of benefits, including activating the parasympathetic nervous system (the part of our autonomic nervous system associated with relaxation), lowering the heart rate and preparing the body and mind for sleep. To explore more about what moon breathing is, exactly why it can help with nighttime anxiety and sleep, and how you can try it, we've spoken to licensed clinical psychologist specializing in sleep and trauma, and yoga teacher, Dr. Leah Kaylor Ph.D. PLLC.. "Moon breathing is a calming yogic breathwork technique rooted in ancient Indian practices of pranayama. In yogic philosophy, the left nostril is associated with lunar (moon) energy—cool, calm, and introspective," says Dr. Kaylor. It's a breathing exercise that involves inhaling slowly through your left nostril only, while keeping the right nostril closed, then exhaling through the right nostril while closing the left. A paper published in Nature exploring the changes in brain activity recorded by EEG during nasal breathing noted that, "Yogic practices suggest, and scientific evidence demonstrates, that right-nostril breathing is involved with relatively higher sympathetic activity (arousal states), while left-nostril breathing is associated with a relatively more parasympathetic activity (stress alleviating state)." "By breathing exclusively through the left nostril, this technique is thought to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and emotional ease," explains Dr. Kaylor. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) are both part of our autonomic nervous system, with research noting that the former is connected to our alert, "fight or flight," response and the latter with "rest and digest" processes, when we are in a relaxed state. "Moon breathing works by channeling breath solely through the left nostril, which is believed to stimulate the brain's right hemisphere — the part associated with calmness, intuition, and emotional regulation," says Dr. Kaylor. The benefits of this, she says, can include reducing sympathetic (stress) arousal, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Plus, moon breathing can help promote mental stillness and emotional grounding, and prepare our bodies for introspection, rest or sleep. One study looked at the effect of different yogic breathing techniques that utilise the left and right nostrils, and both, to see if they had differing effects on reaction time, heart rate and blood pressure. The researchers concluded from their results that moon breathing was among the left nostril techniques that "may induce a state of parasympathetic dominance as seen in (cardiovascular) parameters." They further noted that their findings are in line with "the traditional swara yoga concept that... the flow through left nostril (chandra nadi and ida swara) is relaxatory." Dr. Kaylor explains that moon breathing is particularly effective for pre-sleep anxiety because it: If you're experiencing regular nighttime anxiety, it's important to consult a medical professional for advice. If you want to incorporate moon breathing into your nighttime routine as a tool to combat it, Dr. Kaylor has some simple steps you can follow. The 4-7-8 method is a breathing technique that gained popularity after Dr. Andrew Weil began teaching it, and involves breathing in through your nose for a count of four, holding that breath for a count of seven, and then slowly breathing out through your mouth for a count of eight. Dr. Kaylor explains that the main difference between these two breathing techniques is that "moon breathing is through one nostril." "Moon breathing is best for highly anxious or overstimulated individuals," she says, explaining that it is "ideal for those experiencing hyperarousal or sympathetic overdrive (e.g., anxiety, racing thoughts, agitation)." Because moon breathing does not involve holding your breath, it can also be good breathing technique for those who are sensitive to breath retention, she says, or, those who find it distressing or physiologically uncomfortable. That could include people with a panic disorder or asthma. "4-7-8 is best suited for people with experience in controlled breathing or mindfulness," says Dr. Kaylor. "The extended breath-hold can feel challenging for beginners or those with respiratory sensitivity," she adds, noting that it can suit others too, including those who benefit from structure and counting, and those with sleep-onset insomnia. This is because "studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that 4-7-8 is particularly effective at quieting the mind and inducing a sleep-conducive state." Stress and anxiety are typically associated with higher levels of cortisol, which can increase heart rate and blood pressure. Cortisol is also the sleep hormone associated with making us feel awake and alert, which means that when it's increased, sleep will be more difficult. However, a review of studies looking at the effects of breathing exercises found "that breathing exercises have positive effect on decreasing the blood pressure and heart rate." Dr. Kaylor says, deep breathing can also help to "release physical tension in the body, particularly in the shoulders, chest, and jaw." And, in giving our brains something simple and rhythmic to focus on, deep breathing techniques can "interrupt cognitive rumination." Deep breathing has even been shown to increase melatonin production, the hormone our bodies produce in the evening and which helps us to feel sleepy. One study found that a group of 15 participants who practiced deep breathing alongside meditation and yogic postures for a period of three months saw an increase in plasma melatonin (which is the concentration of melatonin in our blood). In addition, Dr. Kaylor explains that deep breathing can "reduce cortisol levels, allowing melatonin to rise naturally." As well as helping you drift off in a calmer state, it can also help your overall sleep. Research showed that when a group of students practiced moon breathing for four weeks it 'led to improvement in sleep quality." Deep breathing is an incredibly affective way of activating our parasympathetic nervous system, creating a sense of calm and relaxation needed for sleep. Slower, deeper breaths into your diaphragm, "increases the pressure of oxygen in the air sacs, making it easier for oxygen molecules to move into the blood via the capillaries," neuroscience researcher Dr. Yewande Pearce explains in this useful Headspace video.
