Return to Oblivion: Remaster of iconic Elder Scrolls title brings gamers back to Tamriel
Psst. Hey you! Yes, you. We need to talk. We got the gates of Oblivion reopening before we got Elder Scrolls 6.
In a video posted on April 22, video game publisher Bethesda surprised gamers by announcing that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is available for immediate download on Windows, Steam, PlayStation and Xbox platforms. The game is already surging in popularity, reaching over 130,000 concurrent players on Steam by 3 p.m. on launch day.
Studio head Todd Howard gave a nod to a planned sixth installment in the video saying, "Obviously, we're working on the sixth chapter here, but what's great about The Elder Scrolls is being able to look back at all of the chapters."
What is (are) The Elder Scrolls?
"Mmmm that is an interesting question now, isn't it?" The Elder Scrolls is a series of role-playing games developed by Bethesda with five major installments: Arena (1994), Daggerfall (1996), Morrowind (2002), Oblivion (2006) and Skyrim (2011). Bethesda also released Elder Scrolls Online as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in 2012. The series titles alludes to mythical and powerful ancient artifacts from the game universe.
Elder Scrolls games are known for vast lore, open-world exploration and character customization. The games take place on the fictional continent of Tamriel, which blends medieval culture with fantasy elements. Players create a character and have a main storyline to progress through, along with a huge variety of side quests that allow each player to have a unique experience.
What is Oblivion?
Originally released on Windows and Xbox 360, and later for Playstation 3, Oblivion takes place in the province of Cyrodiil which is home to Imperial City, Tamriel's capital. The main storyline involves the player discovering Oblivion Gates opening up across the land. The gates are fiery magic portals that release hostile creatures called Daedra from the hellish plane of Oblivion upon Cyrodiil. The player develops skills, uncovers information and fights enemies to find out why the portals are opening and how to close them.
Oblivion, along with Morrowind and Skyrim, was recognized as Game of the Year by multiple outlets. Oblivion is estimated to have sold over nine million copies in the first nine years of its release.
How is the remastered version different from the 2006 release?
Bethesda worked with video game developer Virtuos to remaster Oblivion using Unreal Engine 5, a 3D computer graphics game engine. Here are some of the changes announced in the release video:
The remaster includes all expansions to the original game.
New atmospheric effects improve lighting and shadows.
Players can now sprint in the game.
Different races of characters now have appropriate audio for their voices.
Lip-syncing is improved for non-human creatures and in dialogues.
The remaster allows players to seamlessly switch between first- and third-person.
The approach to leveling incorporates elements from both Oblivion and Skyrim.
Combat now includes sound effects, visual effects, hit reactions and crosshairs.
And yes, you can still buy yourself some horse armor.

The gorgeous indie game Death Howl will have a new demo on June 9

A deck-building game with soulslike elements is an odd genre mashup, to say the least. But that's what the three-person Danish studio The Outer Zone is creating with Death Howl . The second demo for the indie PC title launches next week on Steam. The unusual blend of genres isn't the game's only hallmark. Death Howl also has a gorgeous art style and music to match its rich themes. You play as Ro, a hunter from a small tribe, who is grieving her son's death. Mystical voices beckon her toward a spirit realm as she tries to bring him back. Ro's adventure leads her on a journey of "love, loss and the slow path toward acceptance." The game's deck-based combat will unlock various melee and ranged spell attacks. As you progress, you'll craft cards built around your preferred tactical style. Meanwhile, shamanic totems will enhance your deck and buff up your strikes. The Outer Zone / 11 Bit Studios What makes it soulslike, besides being hard? Publisher 11 Bit Studios offered some insight on Reddit. "Initially, we thought about a different label for Death Howl ," the publisher wrote. "But as we played it more and brought in random testers, we noticed something surprising. The game, despite not being an action RPG, does feel like a soulslike. It evoked emotions similar to what you experience in a soulslike." Meanwhile, the game's difficulty reveals itself most in boss battles and side quests. Death Howl doesn't arrive until sometime later this year. But the second demo will be playable from June 9 to 16. Head to the game's Steam page to check it out. In the meantime, you can watch its new trailer below. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Splitgate 2 will exit its beta and get an official release on June 6

Splitgate 2 will officially launch on June 6, after what must've been a successful beta . It'll be available on a whole bunch of platforms, including PC via Epic, Windows and Steam. The game will also be playable on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It's free, with optional in-game purchases. As the name suggests, this is a sequel to the extremely popular 2021 arena shooter . Both the original and its sequel offer a fun gameplay hook. Players can create and jump through portals to surprise enemies or to traverse locations quickly. Otherwise, it's a first-person shooter, so imagine a nice combination of Quake with, well, Portal . There's a new trailer to commemorate the official launch, which zeroes in on the story. Developer 1047 Games promises there will be a "metric ton of maps, weapons and modes" on June 6. It has also announced that any progression made during the beta period will carry over to the full release. Version 1.0 will include a map creator and "so much more." To that end, the dev team says there's "one surprise left in store." This will be revealed at Summer Game Fest , so stay tuned. The first Splitgate was a legit phenomenon, with over 10 million beta downloads before it was officially released.

Never's End is a retro tactical RPG with a fantastic pedigree

There's a new tactical RPG coming down the pike, and it's a doozy. Never's End has a retro look that's sure to please fans of iconic titles like Final Fantasy Tactics and boasts a fantastic pedigree. Masayoshi Nishimura, from Octopath Traveler , is on character design duties and the rapper/multi-instrumentalist Doseone made the soundtrack. He previously composed the music for Enter the Gungeon . It previously developed the creative puzzler Inversus , which ended up becoming a sleeper hit . The company hopes this will be something more than a clone of Tactics Ogre or the aforementioned Final Fantasy Tactics . Founder Ryan Juckett says that Never's End was also inspired by the freeform gameplay of stuff like Divinity: Original Sin 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . To that end, the game features an open world and plenty of creative ways for players to tackle turn-based battles. The battle grids can be transformed via elemental magic. Players can drain rivers in the middle of a battle, for the purposes of navigation, or melt the ground to turn it into lava. Enemies can be frozen or set aflame. The company promises that "every battleground is unique, challenging you to find new ways to use magic and shift the odds in your favor." Customization seems to be the order of the day here. Players can "upgrade towns, temples and other locations to build businesses, establish trade routes, and recruit new companions." As the story progresses, these locations will attract a growing community of weaponsmiths, tavern keepers, tanneries, logging camps and more." Characters can also team up to unleash "tactical synergies." Check out the trailer. It looks pretty fun. Never's End comes out in late 2025. It'll be available for PlayStation consoles and PC via Steam. We don't have a price yet but it can already be wishlisted on Steam .
