On Suheldev's birthanniv, minister opens memorial gate

Time of India10-06-2025
Varanasi: On the occasion of Maharaja Suheldev Rajbhar's birth anniversary, UP minister of state for stamp and court registration fees (independent charge) Ravindra Jaiswal inaugurated his memorial gate at Haveliya Chauraha in Sarnath.
He used Rs 8.74 lakh from his MLA fund for the project.
Speaking on the occasion, Jaiswal said that Maharaja Suheldev was a great king of Shravasti, renowned for defeating and killing Ghazi Miyan, a commander of Ghaznavi, in Bahraich in 1034. Suheldev was a king of Shravasti in 11th century, known for decisively defeating Mahmud Ghaznavi's nephew, Ghazi Syed Salar Masud, in battle. "In 1034, Suheldev's army clashed with Masud's forces.
Syed Salar Masud Ghazi, Mahmud Ghaznavi's nephew, captured many parts of then-India across the Indus River.
However, when he attempted to seize Bahraich, he faced Maharaja Suheldev, who defeated him and his army. Ghazi was severely injured in this battle and later died," the minister mentioned.
He further stated that honouring great personalities has become the hallmark of the Yogi govt.
The Yogi govt has not confined history to books but has brought it to the ground, honouring great figures, who were neglected by politics for years. Maharaja Suheldev is one of them, a warrior, who sacrificed his life to protect the nation and religion rather than bowing to foreign invaders, Jaiswal added.

Nation will forever remember those who were martyred in Pahalgam terror attack, and for country: K'taka CM

Bengaluru: "The nation will forever remember, with indebtedness, those who were martyred in the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and in the subsequent conflict between India and Pakistan," stated Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday. Addressing a gathering on the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, CM Siddaramaiah further stated, "We bow our heads in humble respect to their indomitable courage and supreme sacrifice." "Since Independence, countless soldiers have made the supreme sacrifice in wars and conflicts to protect our nation. Even Prime Ministers have laid down their lives in the face of terror attacks. In building the nation's economy, countless workers, farmers, scholars, scientists, teachers, and activists, representing all productive sections of society, have played an active role. On this auspicious occasion, it is our duty to remember and honour them as well," he stated. "Karnataka stood at the forefront of India's freedom movement. Brave sons and daughters such as Kittur Rani Chennamma, Sangolli Rayanna, Dondiya Wagh, the heroic Bedas of Halagali, Mylara Mahadevappa, and Boodi Basappa Nayak inspired generations with their valour. Historic centres of resistance such as Srirangapatna, Surapura, Kittur, Esuru, Vidurashwatha, Shivapura, Ankola, and many others were alive with the spirit of freedom. Lakhs of people participated actively, and thousands laid down their lives for the cause. We must honour them all with heartfelt gratitude," CM Siddaramaiah stated. Surveys by leading national institutions reveal a stark truth: The wealthiest 10 per cent of our population hold 80 per cent of the nation's wealth, yet they contribute only about 3 per cent of the GST collected. The remaining 90 per cent ordinary people who work daily for food and clothing shoulder nearly 97 per cent of GST payments, CM Siddaramaiah noted. "How can any economy sustain itself under such circumstances? How can we fulfil the spirit of our Constitution? How can we reduce this growing inequality? These questions troubled us deeply. It is with the intention of finding answers to these very questions that we launched the Guarantee Schemes and other welfare programmes," CM Siddaramaiah stated. The ideology of Manuvad asserts that only the powerful should thrive while the rest remain as labourers and subordinates, an idea similar to Social Darwinism. In contrast, our Constitution stands firmly for Samvidhanvad, the principle that the weakest and most vulnerable must receive priority, he underlined. "This year, we are setting up 500 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) at a cost of Rs 2,500 crore. We are providing nutritious food to 53 lakh children, ragi malt, milk, eggs or bananas on all school days, and a hot mid-day meal", CM Siddaramaiah stated. Recently, the State Education Policy Commission, chaired by Professor Sukhadeo Thorat, submitted its report. For the first time, steps are being taken to frame a comprehensive, Karnataka-specific education policy which will lead to holistic development of our youth, CM Siddaramaiah added. "We have all observed how our younger generations are caught in the distraction of mobile phones and the Internet. They are facing deep distress resulting in depression, anxiety, sudden anger, and hatred. We must collectively find new ways to address this social challenge. In this regard, we have launched the 'Mobile Bidi - Pustaka Hidi ('Put Down Your Phone – Pick Up a Book)' and 'Odu Karnataka ('Read Karnataka)' campaigns" CM Siddaramaiah stated. "We have declared Karnataka a Naxal-free state. Now, we must all work together to declare our proud state drug-free. In this fight, every citizen must act like a warrior. The government is already working on this mission, involving all stakeholders," the CM stated. Karnataka is facing discrimination in the distribution of resources from the Centre. There is growing concern that Constitutional bodies like the Income Tax Department, Enforcement Directorate, CBI, and others are not working to uphold the true values of democracy and cooperative federalism as enshrined in the Constitution. Every responsible citizen must raise their voice in this regard, he said.

Bihar govt to spend Rs 35.64 crore on interstate bus services for migrant workers

Patna: Migrant workers from Bihar living in other states will soon find it easier to return home during major festivals like Chhath, Diwali, Holi and Durga Puja, with the state government announcing a Rs 35.64 crore initiative to provide smoother transport facilities. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, in his Independence Day address, said the move aims to reduce the annual rush and ticket shortages faced by people travelling back to Bihar during the festive season. Under the plan, the government will launch interstate bus transport services on a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring more buses, regulated fares, and improved connectivity between Bihar and major states such as Delhi, Gurugram, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan. 'This will significantly reduce problems of high fares and non-availability of bus tickets,' Kumar said, adding that the scheme is expected to be operational before the festive season. Every year, thousands of Biharis working outside the state face long waits and inflated fares to return home for celebrations. The new interstate service aims to ease that journey and make festive homecomings stress-free. To encourage operators, the government will provide grants of Rs 150 per seat during peak season and Rs 300 per seat in the off-season. This is expected to increase the number and improve the connectivity of buses running between Bihar and major states such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. The total estimated expenditure over five years is Rs 35.64 crore, with an additional 2 per cent contingency fund of Rs 71.28 lakh, bringing the overall cost to Rs 36.35 crore. For 2025-26, Rs 7.27 crore will be drawn from the Bihar Contingency Fund. Passenger groups have welcomed the initiative, saying it will help end the long-standing issues of ticket shortages and inflated fares during the festive rush. The government believes the scheme will ensure stability in fares and significantly reduce travel hassles for those returning home for celebrations.

FMCG firms cheer as PM Modi's I-Day announcements likely to boost demand

Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies expect to laugh their way to the bank this year as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcements in his Independence Day speech could boost consumption. The announcement of the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana aims to support the creation of over 3.5 crore jobs in two years. The scheme will provide an incentive of up to Rs 15,000 in two instalments to newly employed youth and up to Rs 3,000 per month per new employee to employers for the creation of new job opportunities. Modi also announced GST reforms as a Diwali gift to lower the tax burden on the common man. Because of these two announcements, consumer goods companies expect consumers to increase their budgets for purchasing more. This increased spending is expected to be seen particularly by the urban middle-class consumer. 'I think this is a bold move by the government, as reductions in daily essential items will push urban consumption higher,' Anghsu Mallick, Managing Director and CEO of AWL Agri Business (formerly known as Adani Wilmar), told Business Standard. Parle Products, which sells biscuits like Parle-G, also sees consumption further growing with these announcements. 'This year is going to be very critical. I don't see any reason why companies will not do well,' said Mayank Shah, Vice-President at Parle Products. Shah explained that the company had targeted high single-digit growth for FY26 in the months of April and May. However, the announcements made in the past few months, like the Reserve Bank of India cutting interest rates, increasing the income tax rebate, and good monsoons, have already put more money in the hands of the consumer, giving a boost to consumption. 'With these slew of measures coming in, we expect to close the year with a minimum of 12-15 per cent growth,' Shah said. Dabur India also expects the government's move to improve sentiment as the festive season approaches. 'As the festive season approaches, this move will help improve sentiments and put more purchasing power directly into the hands of millions of Indian families. This is more than just a policy shift; it's a signal of confidence in India's consumption story. It will energise demand, especially in rural and semi-urban markets, ease the burden on households, and catalyse growth for branded FMCG products,' said Mohit Malhotra, CEO of Dabur India. Amul also expects the reduction in GST rates to benefit both the producer and the consumer. 'We have been requesting the government to reconsider the current GST rates, and once it is lowered, it will help bring prices down and also stimulate demand,' said the Managing Director at Amul. He also added that supporting the youth with jobs will encourage them and, more importantly, motivate them, which will further support consumption.
