Hermes to open 26th leather goods site in Charleville-Mezieres
The Maroquinerie de Charleville-Mézières becomes the third site of Hermes' Ardennes Leather Goods and Saddlery hub, following the inaugurations of the Maroquinerie de Bogny-sur-Meuse in 2004 and the Maroquinerie de la Sormonne in 2023. The École Hermes des savoir-faire, established in Charleville-Mézières in 2021, provides training for the Ardennes hub's artisans and oversees the CAP and CQP vocational qualification assessments in leatherwork and cutting respectively. To recruit its artisans, the house relies on the École Hermes des Savoir-Faire and its partnership with the France Travail employment agency.
Hermes will open its 26th leather goods site in Charleville-Mezieres in 2027, employing 250 artisans. It's the third site in the Ardennes hub, supported by the í‰cole Hermí¨s des savoir-faire. Built sustainably on a historic site, the 5,800 m² facility will feature solar panels, eco-materials, and promote artisanal heritage, craftsmanship training, and sustainable transport access.
The proximity of the three Ardennes manufactures promotes the learning of Hermes' unique expertise and the transmission among artisans of the house's culture and the gestures of the leatherworking and saddlery metier, Hermes said on its website.
The architectural project incorporates the conservation and conversion of the Deville brownfield site, an emblematic industrial location in the Ardennes capital, thus preserving its manufacturing legacy, which is etched in the collective memory. The site is located in the historic centre of the city, just a few minutes from the station, allowing the artisans to commute using sustainable transport. Designed by Coldefy & Associés – the architects behind the Maroquinerie de la Sormonne – the future manufacture will comprise three main sections. The original buildings, with their striking gables, will house the administrative offices and cafeteria, while the extension will be dedicated to the table work, cutting and stitching workshops, as well as the site's logistics operations. These two buildings will be connected by a large entrance hall, which will serve as a communal hub and crossroads within the manufacture. The entire complex will cover a total surface area of approximately 5,800 m².
The extension is oriented north-south to let natural light into the workshops. Hermès is working with local businesses on the construction project, and is using insulating materials such as timber framing, straw insulation and natural earthen render, and exterior brick walls. The energy-positive building will be equipped with nearly 1,400 m² of solar panels and will be connected to the district heating network, which is powered by renewable energy, and thus will achieve E4C2 certification.

Indices shift into high gear as inflation speed bumps fade; Nifty closes above 24,600
The domestic equity benchmarks advanced on Wednesday, tracking positive global cues and buoyed by upbeat domestic inflation data. The Nifty closed above the 24,600 mark, with gains led by healthcare and metal stocks. Sentiment was lifted after India's retail inflation eased to an eight-year low, stoking hopes of a revival in discretionary spending, while softer U.S. retail inflation strengthened expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut in September. Globally, optimism improved on the extension of China's tariff deadline and easing crude oil prices. Investors remained watchful of uncertainties surrounding U.S. trade policy and the Trump-Putin meeting on August 15. The S&P BSE Sensex advanced 304.32 points or 0.38% to 80,539.91. The Nifty 50 index jumped 131.95 points or 0.54% to 24,619.35. Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (up 7.90%), Bharat Electronics (up 2.25%) and HDFC Bank (up 0.48%) boosted the Nifty higher. The broader market outperformed the frontline indices. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.56% and the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.58%. The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 2230 stocks rose, 1864 fell, while 162 remained unchanged. The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of the market's expectation of volatility over the near term, shed 0.75% to 12.14. Numbers to Track: The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper shed 0.15% to 6.473 from the previous close of 6.483. In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The United States 10-year bond yield fell 1.28% to 4.253. In the commodities market, Brent crude for October 2025 settlement added 36 cents or 0.54% to $65.76 a barrel. Global Market: The US Dow Jones index futures are currently up by 139 points, indicating a positive start for US stocks today. European shares advanced while Asian markets ended higher on Wednesday as the latest U.S. inflation data raised hopes that the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates next month. In Japan, a report showed manufacturers grew more confident about business conditions after a trade agreement with the United States. The monthly poll, which tracks the Bank of Japan's quarterly Tankan business survey, reportedly showed the manufacturers' sentiment index rising to plus 9 in August from plus 7 in July, marking a second straight month of improvement. Further, Japan's annual wholesale inflation slowed for the fourth straight month in July, data showed on Wednesday, underscoring the central bank's view that upward price pressure from raw material costs will dissipate. The corporate goods price index (CGPI), which measures the price companies charge each other for their goods and services, rose 2.6% in July from a year earlier, data showed, slowing from the previous month's 2.9% increase. It compared with the widely reported median market forecast for a 2.5% rise. US stocks ended higher on Tuesday as inflation data was tamer than expected, soothing investor fears that tariffs are not spiking prices. The trading session saw the S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite close at fresh record highs. The S&P 500 added 1.1% to settle at 6,445.76, while the Nasdaq ended 1.4% higher at 21,681.90. Excluding food and energy, the core CPI increased 0.3% for the month and 3.1% from a year ago. The monthly core rate was the biggest increase since January, while the annual rate was the highest since February. Thursdays producer price index report on wholesale inflation will add another piece of the economic picture. The report comes ahead of the Feds Jackson Hole meeting on Aug. 21-23, which could also help shape expectations for the central banks next policy move. 58 gold bars, luxury bags seized in $2.3 billion money laundering case, handed over to Deloitte
Singapore police have transferred hundreds of high-end goods — from diamond jewellery to Hermes handbags — to Deloitte & Touche Financial Advisory Services for management and sale, as part of the massive S$3 billion (US$2.33 billion) money laundering case. Singapore Police seized 58 gold bars in a major money laundering case (Representational image) The handover, which took place on Aug 11 and 12, 2025, is part of ongoing efforts to liquidate seized non-cash assets and channel the proceeds into the government's Consolidated Fund. What was the money laundering case about? The case came to light after islandwide raids on Aug 15, 2023, exposed an illicit gambling ring operating across Southeast Asia. Over the years, millions in criminal proceeds were allegedly laundered into Singapore, according to a report in Channel News Asia. Ten foreign nationals — nine men and one woman from China with criminal backgrounds — were arrested in the operation. They were convicted in 2024 of offences including money laundering, forgery and resisting arrest, and sentenced to jail terms ranging from 13 to 17 months. After serving their sentences, all were deported and barred from returning to Singapore. Seventeen other suspects fled Singapore during the probe and remain outside the country's jurisdiction. What items were handed over to Deloitte? In this latest stage, police transferred 466 luxury goods and 58 gold bars to Deloitte. These include: Around 50 designer handbags from brands such as Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Chanel. Examples: a Hermes Birkin 25 Togo bag valued at about S$30,000, and a Hermes Kelly Alligator bag that can cost between S$70,000 and S$120,000. At least 14 luxury watches from top brands including Patek Philippe, Richard Mille, Van Cleef & Arpels, Rolex and Audemars Piguet. Gold bars weighing between 999g and 1kg each, valued at roughly S$139,000 apiece. Diamond and jade jewellery such as earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, along with one gold display plate and a luxury belt. What will happen to the seized goods? Deloitte will store and eventually sell the luxury items. Police said: 'To facilitate this, police are progressively handing over all remaining non-cash assets that have yet to be liquidated to Deloitte. Between Aug 11 and 12, police handed over 466 luxury goods items and 58 pieces of gold bars to Deloitte.' Deloitte will securely store the assets before proposing sale options, which could include auctions or direct sales. 'Deloitte will commence the realisation of the assets upon the Government's approval of the proposals,' the police spokesman said. All proceeds will be paid into Singapore's Consolidated Fund — the government's central account for revenue and expenditure.

Nifty ends below 24,500 as banking stocks weigh
Domestic equity benchmarks ended a choppy session in the red on Tuesday, with the Nifty slipping below the 24,500 mark as weakness in banking and financial counters weighed on sentiment. In contrast, pharmaceutical and healthcare shares managed to eke out gains, providing some cushion to the broader market. The subdued close reflected cautious investor mood amid mixed global cues and lingering uncertainty. Traders stayed on edge ahead of the release of Julys domestic inflation data and a crucial US inflation report, both seen as likely drivers of near-term interest rate expectations. The S&P BSE Sensex dropped 368.49 points or 0.46% to 80,235.59. The Nifty 50 index declined 97.65 points or 0.40% to 24,487.40. Bajaj Finance (down 2.87%), HDFC Bank (down 1.31%) and ICICI Bank (down 1.02%) dragged the Nifty lower today. In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index shed 0.25% and the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.04%. The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 2068 stocks rose, 1973 fell, while 163 remained unchanged. The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of the market's expectation of volatility over the near term, jumped 0.12% to 12.23. Economy: Indias retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), eased to 1.55% in July, down 55 basis points from 2.10% in June, according to data from the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation. This marks the lowest year-on-year inflation rate since June 2017. Numbers to Track: The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper rose 0.65% to 6.470 from the previous close of 6.428. In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 87.7125 compared with its close of 87.7500 during the previous trading session. MCX Gold futures for 3 October 2025 settlement shed 0.20% to Rs 100,125. The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was up 0.03% to 98.54. The United States 10-year bond yield shed 0.07% to 4.282. In the commodities market, Brent crude for October 2025 settlement added 11 cents or 0.17% to $66.74 a barrel. Global Market: Most European indices advanced on Tuesday after U.K. employment grew by a greater-than-expected 238,000 in the three months to June, according to official data. The number of job vacancies declined by 44,000 in the May to July period, marking the 37th consecutive period of quarterly falls. Shares in Asia mostly advanced after an extension to the U.S.-China trade truce was announced overnight, granting the worlds largest economies more room to negotiate a deal. President Donald Trump on Monday delayed high U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods from snapping back into place for another 90 days, a White House official has reportedly said. Those tariffs were set to resume Tuesday. But Trump signed an executive order hours beforehand that extends the deadline until mid-November, according to media reports. The delay was the expected outcome from the latest round of talks between U.S. trade negotiators and their Chinese counterparts, which took place in Stockholm in late July. Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry has revised its 2025 growth forecast for the city-state upwards to 1.5%-2.5% from 0%-2%. On Wall Street, stocks fell across the board to end Mondays session as investors await inflation data this week to assess the outlook for interest rates going forward. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 200.52 points, or 0.45%, and closed at 43,975.09. The S&P 500 slipped 0.25% to end at 6,373.45, while the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.3% to settle at 21,385.40. Investors expect the recent shakeup at the U.S. Federal Reserve and signs of labor market weakness could nudge the central bank into adopting a dovish monetary policy stance later this year, fueling much of the optimism. As per media reports, the semiconductor majors had agreed to give the United States government 15% of revenue from sales of their advanced chips to China. The report further said that the levy could hit the chipmakers' margins and set a precedent for Washington to tax critical U.S. exports, potentially extending beyond semiconductors. New Listing: Shares of Highway Infrastructure ended the day at Rs 122.84 on the BSE, marking a sharp 75.49% premium over its issue price of Rs 70. Net income attributable to the common shareholder dropped 36% to $96 million, hurt by restructuring charges and lower operating performance, partially cushioned by favourable metal price lag.
