Soccer-Lyon's Matic, Le Havre's Hassan given two-game bans after concealing Ligue 1's anti-homophobia badge
(Reuters) -Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Nemanja Matic and Le Havre striker Ahmed Hassan have each been handed two-game bans with a further two matches suspended after they concealed Ligue 1's anti-homophobia insignia on their shirts, the French top-flight said.
Serbian Matic, 36, had put on a tape over the anti-homophobia badge when he came on as a substitute during Lyon's 2-0 home win over Angers on May 17 which was the final day of the Ligue 1 season. His Lyon contract is set to expire at the end of the month.
Egyptian Hassan, 32, also received the same punishment, with the incident having occurred during Le Havre's 3-2 win at Strasbourg.
"In addition, the committee proposed to the player - who immediately accepted at the meeting - that he take part, within six months, in a campaign to raise awareness of the fight against homophobia in football..." Ligue 1 said in a statement on Thursday.
Ligue 1 had planned for players to wear rainbow-coloured symbols on shirts or armbands and display messages in stadiums as part of its annual awareness drive.
Yet participation has been uneven in recent years, with some players citing personal or religious reasons for opting out.

"I don't know what tomorrow brings in my career. Wimbledon is next. Twelve months at this point in my career is a long time. Do I wish to play more? Yes I do." Tennis-Ruthless Sinner downs Djokovic to reach maiden French Open final
Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - June 6, 2025 Italy's Jannik Sinner celebrates winning his semi final match against Serbia's Novak Djokovic REUTERS/Stephanie Lecocq PARIS (Reuters) -World number one Jannik Sinner defeated record-chasing Novak Djokovic 6-4 7-5 7-6(3) in a clash of generations on Friday to set up a blockbuster French Open final showdown with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Playing a younger, modern version of himself, the 38-year-old Djokovic looked every bit his age for a while on Court Philippe Chatrier as Sinner used his blistering forehand to send the Serbian chasing the ball left, right and centre. But the former Serbian world number one, chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title, showed he thrived on the grandest stage and threatened a comeback only to miss three set points in the third. The Italian, who recently came back from a doping ban, stood firm in the tiebreak and wrapped up the contest on his second match point. He will face a sterner test in Sunday's final against Alcaraz, who advanced when his semi-final opponent Lorenzo Musetti retired injured at the beginning of the fourth set. Türkiye, France claim wins on third day of VNL action in Beijing
BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye and France each secured victories on Friday at the FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL) in Beijing, as both teams continued to test their lineups and build momentum during the first week of competition. Türkiye swept Thailand 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-22), improving its record to 2-0 in the Beijing leg. Opposite Aleksia Karutasu delivered a standout all-around performance with a match-high 19 points, including 10 kills, four blocks and five aces. "It wasn't as easy as it looked," Karutasu said. "Thailand played a great defense and challenged us in every set. I'm proud of how we stayed composed and got the job done." Head coach Daniele Santarelli praised his young squad's composure. "We're on the right track. Many of these players are making their VNL debuts, and I'm proud of how they handled today's match against a strong Thai team." Looking ahead to Saturday's clash against fellow unbeaten side Poland, Santarelli added: "Poland is one of the strongest teams in the world with a very cohesive starting lineup. We're still learning and developing chemistry, so it'll be a big test for us." Thailand, meanwhile, suffered its third straight defeat in Beijing, following losses to Poland and Belgium earlier in the week. Outside hitter Pimpichaya Kokram led Thailand with 15 points, while Donphon Sinpho added 10. Thailand will rest on Saturday before facing France on Sunday in its final match of the leg. Earlier in the day, France overcame Belgium 3-1 (25-22, 13-25, 25-13, 25-19), rebounding from its opening loss to Poland and handing Belgium its second defeat in Beijing. French opposite Iman Ndiaye was on fire, racking up 30 points with dominant attacking at the net. In contrast, Belgium had only one player in double figures - captain Britt Herbots, who finished with 14 points. After beating Thailand on Thursday, Belgium now stands at 1-2 in this leg and will have a bye on Saturday. France, improving to 1-1, will face host China on Saturday in what promises to be a high-stakes matchup for both teams.
