Global Healthy Living Foundation Says Vaccine Committee Firings Before Respiratory Virus Season Creates High Risk Of Illness In the Chronic Disease Community

Business Wirea day ago

BUSINESS WIRE)--Yesterday, the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) removed all sitting members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the expert panel that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on vaccine use.
Vaccines are the most cost-beneficial intervention in healthcare
While the groups such as the Global Healthy Living Foundation (GHLF) recognize the Secretary's right to do this, the decision made just ahead of the upcoming respiratory virus season puts at risk chronically ill patients who rely on vaccines to fight respiratory virus infections.
ACIP is often critical in shaping public health strategies with its advisory recommendations. While the FDA-approved label remains the definitive, enforceable standard for how vaccines should be used in clinical practice, ACIP guidance often informs insurance company coverage, determines whether vaccines are free under the Affordable Care Act, provides healthcare provider protocols, and helps ensure vaccination campaign success , especially for vulnerable populations.
'Removing the entire committee without immediate replacement or clear guidance creates uncertainty when COVID-19, flu, and RSV are expected to circulate widely in the coming months,' said Robert, Popovian, PharmD, MS, GHLF's Chief Science Policy Officer.
'Now is the time when the advisory committee makes its recommendations, and disruption in the advisory process could have profound implications for individuals with chronic illnesses who depend on timely vaccine access to protect themselves against these viruses.
'We support the need for ACIP to remain independent, and we recognize the Secretary's authority to appoint new members,' Dr. Popovian added. 'But removing all members without naming successors or offering a timeline to replace them so close to respiratory season could delay essential recommendations.
'Vaccines are the most cost-beneficial intervention in healthcare—we should do everything possible to maintain uninterrupted access to expert guidance including ensuring there is no gap in expert advice during this critical period for immunization planning,' Dr. Popovian added.

Covid-19 India Cases 2025 Live Updates: Active cases cross 7,000-mark — not Delhi, West Bengal or Maharashtra but this state has most cases

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 12, 2025, 10:07 IST India has seen a fresh rise in Covid-19 infections with active cases crossing the 7,000 mark as of June 12, 2025. The country now has a total of 7,154 active cases, as per data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Importantly, six new Covid-related deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours — two from Maharashtra, one from Madhya Pradesh, and three others under review. Kerala leads the chart as worst-hit state Despite no recent headlines from major metros like Delhi, Kolkata, or Mumbai, it is Kerala that continues to top the active caseload in India with 2,165 active cases, accounting for over 30% of the national burden. Gujarat (1,281), West Bengal (747), Delhi (731), and Maharashtra (615) are also witnessing relatively high numbers. New Omicron variants fuelling mild surges Health experts attribute the recent rise to highly transmissible but less severe Omicron sub-variants such as JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC. These strains have been classified by the WHO as 'Variants Under Monitoring,' meaning they are not currently considered dangerous but are being tracked closely. Covid becoming part of seasonal cycles While SARS-CoV-2 has not disappeared, its pattern of recurrence has now become more predictable, similar to influenza. The ongoing infections mostly result in milder symptoms, but vulnerable populations are advised to remain cautious and follow preventive protocols. Breakthrough procedure helps prevent amputations for Sacramento area patients

( — A breakthrough surgery helping save limbs and lives took place in Sacramento on Wednesday morning. The procedure aims to treat people suffering from Peripheral Artery Disease. PAD is a serious and rarely-treated circulatory condition that restricts blood flow to the limbs due to narrowed blood vessels. It kills more people than breast, colon, and prostate cancer combined. 'Plaque that builds up in these arteries causes not only hardening of the arteries but also plaque in these blood vessels,' said Dr. Inder Singh, an interventional cardiovascular specialist at TLC Vascular. When blood can't flow properly, minor wounds can become dangerous. They can lead to infection and, in some cases, amputation. Michaels Distributing Center in San Joaquin County set to close, affecting over 200 jobs 'If they get an injury or they get a wound or they get a scratch, those will not heal because they don't have enough, adequate perfusion to heal those wounds,' Dr. Singh said. Helping to change patient outcomes, Dr. Singh is now performing a first-of-its-kind procedure using a newly FDA-cleared removable stent called SPUR. 'The idea with it is that basically that kind of treatment that deep penetrates into the tissue and treats it, it will prevent future closure or at least prolong the time from when the blood vessels close,' said Dr. Singh. 'Enabling the patients to be able to heal their wounds, which is really the main outcome we're looking for.' is the first in the Sacramento area to use SPUR, designed specifically for the small, fragile arteries below the knee. Unlike a traditional stent, the spur temporarily holds the vessel open and then is removed, leaving nothing behind. Charges filed against former Cal Fire employee in child pornography case 'We can see somebody on an outpatient basis one day and actually fix a problem rather than put a band-aid on, you know, the incorrect problem,' said Shelby Adney, a nurse practitioner at TLC Vascular. It's an innovative procedure now preventing amputations, healing wounds, and maintaining patients' normal lives. 'Once you can preserve that and heal their wounds… they get their life back,' Dr. Singh said. 'They're ambulatory. They can spend time with their family. You can do a lot of things that most people expect to do.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

MTV's Ananda Lewis Dies at 52

Ananda Lewis, a former MTV VJ, has died at the age of 52. Lakshmi Emory, whom Lewis once described as a 'phenomenal sister' in a birthday message, shared news of her death in a June 11 Facebook post. 'She's free, and in His heavenly arms,' she wrote next to a black-and-white photo of Lewis. 'Lord, rest her soul.' Emory did not share additional details, including Lewis' cause of death. Lewis was an MTV staple in the late '90s, hosting 'Total Request Live' and video countdown show'Hot Zone.' She also hosted her own talk show 'The Ananda Lewis Show' in 2001. Lewis was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2019, but later revealed that she opted against the double mastectomy doctors recommended at the time. In a January 2025 op-ed for Essence, Lewis shared that she tried alternative methods to monitor her breast cancer, including cuting out alcohol, sugar, monthly ultrasounds, high-dose vitamin C IVs, hyperbaric chamber sessions and qigong exercise, among others. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she discovered that her tumor had grown and underwent genetically targeted fractionated chemotherapy, which is a treatment that destroys cancer cells without harming healthy ones, according to Cleveland Clinic. However, a PET scan done in October 2023 confirmed that her cancer had progressed to Stage 4 cancer. This time, she shared that she underwent treatment at an integrative facility. While Lewis had previously said she regretted refusing to undergo mammograms out of fear of radiation exposure, she urged the importance of women getting informed and learning about prevention. In her 2025 Essence piece, she wrote, 'Going into 2025, I would say to women: Do everything in your power to avoid my story becoming yours. If I had known what I know now 10 years ago, perhaps I wouldn't have ended up here.' Adding, 'I encourage people to look at the information and studies that exist. Seek them out, learn from them and apply the changes to your life, so that you can continue to thrive and live as long as you can.' This article was originally published on
