Akron ineligible for postseason due to low Academic Progress Rate
Akron failed to meet NCAA-imposed academic standards last season, falling below the organization's minimum Academic Progress Rate score of 930. According to statistics released this week by the NCAA, Akron was last in the nation at the Division I level at 914 and is ineligible to compete in an FBS bowl.
Falling below the 930 benchmark can lead to penalties ranging from reductions in practice time to a bowl ban. If a program falls below 900, it could lose its Division I status.
After the 2022-23 academic year, Akron scored 925 and lost 20 percent of its weekly practice hours for 2024.
Being below the mark for two straight years leaves the Zips unable to compete in the Mid-American Conference title game, too.
With a 1,000 score, national champion Ohio State led the nation in Academic Progress Rate.
Akron is coached by former Mississippi State head coach Joe Moorhead, who has an 8-28 record in three seasons there.

August 9 - Detroit Lions cornerback Morice Norris Jr., who was taken off the field via ambulance during a preseason game in Atlanta Friday night, provided a positive update about his condition via social media. "Amen Amen," he wrote on his Instagram story Saturday morning. "I'm all good man don't stress it appreciate all the check ins and love." A Lions-blue heart emoji and a bible verse followed. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Falcons running back Nathan Carter took a handoff and got into the Detroit secondary. As Norris went in for the tackle, Carter's right knee hit Norris in the head. The second-year player immediately went to the turf and Lions trainers ran onto the field. After the ambulance carrying Norris left the field, Atlanta quarterback Emory Jones took the snap and stopped the play. The Falcons offense and Lions defense remained on the field, meeting at midfield in a circle, the players bowing their heads and holding hands with each other. Lions coach Dan Campbell and his Atlanta counterpart, Raheem Morris, agreed to end the game. The Lions won 17-10. Norris was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center in Atlanta, for observation. The team issued a statement after the game that said Norris was in stable condition and "feeling and movement" in all his extremities. Norris, 24, appeared in two games for the Lions last year after signing as an undrafted free agent. He was in on one play on defense and 32 plays on special teams. He played two seasons at Fresno State (2022-23) after spending two seasons in junior college. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift were conspicuous by their absence from the funeral of dad Ed's longtime girlfriend Maureen Maguire on Thursday. Pictures exclusively taken by the Daily Mail showed the likes of Jason and his wife Kylie attending the small family service in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania on August 7. But while most of the family turned up at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, there was no sign of Travis or his superstar girlfriend Taylor. Ed also shared a photograph with Maguire from Saturday Night Live in March 2023 in New York, when three-time Super Bowl winner Travis was the guest host. In an interview last year with the LA Times, Ed revealed how his girlfriend and Swift had struck up a bond. Maguire, according to Ed, jokingly told Swift 'hey, that's my boyfriend' when the singer took a selfie with Travis and Jason's father at an NFL game. Maguire's obituary doesn't explain how she and Ed met but revealed how much football was an influence on her later years.
