
Galaxy's Oldest Known Naked Eye Star Can Be Seen From A Dark Backyard

The oldest known naked eye star in our Milky Way Galaxy is not some flashy red supergiant on the verge of going supernova, like Betelgeuse in the constellation of Orion. Nor is it part of an ancient globular cluster in the halo of our Milky Way.
Instead, Mu Cassiopeia A is a simple field star --- a yellow dwarf of the same spectral type as our own sun, but one that clocks in at an astonishing 12.7 billion years old. It's part of a visual binary (double star) system known as Marfak, from the Arabic 'Al Marfiq' (the elbow), located in the Northern constellation of Cassiopeia.
Located only some 25 light years away, Mu Cas A is headed towards us along our line of sight at a clip of some 97 km per second. In fact, by 5200 A.D., the star will have moved into the constellation of Perseus.
Most of the stars in our galaxy aren't as old as Mu Cas A & B, Astronomer Gerard van Belle, director of science at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., told me via email. This binary star tells us about what the earliest generation of stars were like from the birth of the Milky Way galaxy, which was expected to have happened only 800 million years after the Big Bang, he says.
On any given clear night in the Northern Hemisphere, those who can find a dark enough spot can see it with the naked eye. And with a decent pair of binoculars, you are guaranteed success, even if you live in a suburban area with light pollution.
Here's how to find Mu Cas A on the sky.

The primary star, mu Cas A (sometimes noted as 'Aa') is a G5V main sequence star - like our sun, just a touch redder, says van Belle. For its color, it's cooler than expected, because it's old and therefore has low 'metal' content, he says. But unlike our sun, it has very little elements heavier than hydrogen or helium, says van Belle.
Incredibly, Mu Cas was likely formed in a dwarf galaxy that became part of our Milky Way even before the disk of our own galaxy formed. Mu Cas and other stars like it in our galaxy are fascinating because they offer stellar theorists a view onto the earliest epochs of our galaxy.
Mu Cas A lies in the general field of the Milky Way and might have belonged to a cluster at one time, but if so, the cluster has dissipated, Howard Bond, an astronomer at Penn State University and former at The Space Telescope Science Institute, told me via phone.
The star probably belonged to a couple of small galaxies that collided together to make the Milky Way, says Bond.
A couple of decades ago, stars like Mu Cas A were the source of controversy since for a while it seemed that our galaxy's oldest stars might be older than the cosmos itself.
The so-called Methuselah star, known in scientific circles by its catalog number of HD140283 is a case in point.
A well-known reference object in stellar evolution, its peculiar chemical composition, proximity and absence of reddening makes it an interesting case-study of so-called Population II stars (old metal-poor halo stars), note the authors of a 2024 paper appearing in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
Earlier estimates from observations dating back to the year 2000 placed the star at some 16 billion years old, says NASA. But new Hubble Space Telescope age estimates have reduced the range of measurement uncertainty, so that the star's age overlaps with the universe's age, says NASA.
Lying some 190 light years away, HD140283's orbit carries it down through the plane of our galaxy from the ancient halo of stars that encircle the Milky Way, says NASA.
The halo stars are among the first inhabitants of our galaxy and collectively represent an older population from the stars, like our sun, that formed later in the disk, NASA notes.
HD140283 is still one of the oldest stars for which an age has been determined, says Bond. I would not claim it is the oldest known, but it still is one of the best ones for measuring an age, because it is so nearby and relatively bright, he says.
Viewable with binoculars, the Methuselah star is now thought to have an age of some 12.3 billion years, at least a billion and a half years younger than the current age of our cosmos.
Now at the end of its life, Mu Cas A is expected to remain on the main sequence as a hydrogen-burning star for roughly another billion years. When Mu Cas A does begin its red giant phase, it will have lived about a third longer than our own sun, which is expected to veer off the main sequence in another 6 billion years or so.

Cicadas are emerging in Pennsylvania, but you may not be hearing them yet. Here's why
Cicadas are now emerging in central and southeastern Pennsylvania, and people should expect to see them before being able to hear their unique singing sounds. Michael Skvarla, assistant research professor of arthropod identification at Penn State University, said on May 28 that he has been receiving reports over the past week about periodical Brood XIV cicadas being on the landscape. The large insects emerge every 17 years. 'In central Pennsylvania, in Centre County, they started emerging over the last couple of days to the earliest I'm seeing is May 25 or so,' he said. 'In more southern, warmer parts of the state, down in the southeast close to Reading, they started emerging there a little bit earlier.' He expects people will discover them in several counties including Centre, Clinton, Franklin, Luzerne, Schuylkill, York, Mifflin, Juniata, Perry and northern Huntingdon. 'These things are patchy,' he said about them not being everywhere in each county. 'In Centre County, they are in Bellefonte area, but they are not in State College area,' he said. He's received reports about people starting to see cicadas but not hearing any sounds coming from them. 'The males are the ones that sing. They are doing that to attract females,' he said. Once a cicada emerges, it takes about a week to 10 days for it to reach sexual maturity. Once that happens the males start buzzing or singing, which can be loud in some locations. They are coming out, people are starting to see them, but they are not singing yet,' Skvarla said. The timing may have been delayed by a long streak of cold and wet weather. 'That may be delaying their maturation. They may be a couple of days, even behind a week. It may take them 14 days before they start singing just because it's so unseasonably cold,' Skvarla said. People can expect to hear the singing or buzzing sounds for two or three weeks. 'They are on the landscape for about a month before they disappear,' he said. 'You'll probably see a noticeable decline by middle to late June and they will be entirely gone by the end of June,' he said with a rare sighting or two occurring the beginning of July. He encourages people to spend some time looking for cicadas and if you live outside of the emergence area to take a trip and see them. How they know what year to emerge: Cicadas, a land lobster to humans and delicacy for animals and fish, to emerge in Pa. 'The periodical cicada emergence is one of the great wonders of the natural world and you don't get it anywhere else in the world, they only occur in eastern North America. This is the kind of phenomena that people who are interested in natural history will travel around the world to different places to go see and we are lucky that we have it right here in our backyard,' he said. There are different broods of cicadas. For example in the summer of 2021, the Brood X cicadas emerged in southcentral Pennsylvania. After this year, you have may to wait four years to see another cicada. According to Penn State University, the Brood V cicadas are expected in 2029 in Adams, Cumberland and Franklin counties. Strawberry moon to delight stargazers ahead of summer solstice
The upcoming solstice on June 20 will mark the official start to astronomical summer across the Northern Hemisphere, but before the changing of the seasons, there is one more night sky event that is about to unfold. The full Strawberry Moon will rise Tuesday evening and continue to shine into Wednesday morning, a sight that can be seen around the world. June's full moon nickname dates back to the Indigenous Peoples of the northeastern United States, who recognized that the strawberry harvest season typically began around the same time as the month's full moon, Chris Palma, the professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University, told AccuWeather. "But interestingly, this moon, where the sun is very high in the sky, the moon is actually going to be very low in the sky. So there's a chance it will actually look a little bit reddish or pink, and, and so that may also be part of the origin of the name," Palma said. Similar to the Strawberry Moon nickname, there are other unofficial titles for June's full moon that date back hundreds of years, including the Green Corn Moon, the Blooming Moon and the Hatching Moon. Stargazers who miss out on the Strawberry Moon Tuesday night can step outside and look skyward Wednesday night, as the moon will still appear full.

3D Systems collaborates with Penn State, ASU researchers on NASA projects
3D Systems (DDD) is collaborating with researchers from Penn State University and Arizona State University on two projects sponsored by the National Aeronautics & Space Administration intended to enable ground-breaking alternatives to current thermal management solutions. Severe temperature fluctuations in space can damage sensitive spacecraft components, resulting in mission failure. By combining deep applications expertise with 3D Systems' leading additive manufacturing solutions comprising Direct Metal Printing technology and tailored materials and Oqton's 3DXpert software, the teams are engineering sophisticated thermal management solutions for the demands of next-generation satellites and space exploration. The project led by researchers with Penn State University, Arizona State University, and the NASA Glenn Research Center1 in collaboration with 3D Systems' Application Innovation Group has resulted in processes to build embedded high-temperature passive heat pipes in heat rejection radiators that are additively manufactured in titanium. These heat pipe radiators are 50% lighter per area with increased operating temperatures compared with current state-of-the-art radiators, allowing them to radiate heat more efficiently for high power systems. Additionally, a project led by researchers at Penn State University and NASA Glenn Research Center with 3D Systems' AIG yielded a process to additively manufacture one of the first functional parts using nickel titanium shape memory alloys that can be passively actuated and deployed when heated. This passive shape memory alloy radiator is projected to yield a deployed-to-stowed area ratio that is 6x larger than currently available solutions, enabling future high-power communications and science missions in restricted CubeSat volume. When deployed on spacecraft, such as satellites, these radiators can raise operating power levels and reduce thermal stress on sensitive components, preventing failures and prolonging satellite lifespan.
