Exclusive: DRDO Guest House Manager Was Spying On Top Scientists For Pak
The accused man, Mahendra Prasad, working as a contractual employee at the guest house for the last five years, had access to personal information, like emails and telephone numbers, of the top scientists, which he is accused to have shared with Pakistan.
After a week of intense joint interrogation, the accused was arrested by the Rajasthan police and taken in for a two-day police custody.
Mahendra Prasad was the manager at the top secret DRDO guest house inside the Chandan Field firing range in Jaisalmer.
This guest house hosts India's top scientists when they come to Pokhran and Chandan for experiments and testing of India's missile and defence systems. No civilian is allowed inside its premises.
Its location, somewhere inside the Chandan field firing range, remains a mystery.
Intelligence Bureau sources expressed surprise that a person on contract, an outsider, was given the task of managing a high-security guest house. MR Enterprises, a private company, was given the lease to run this guest house, hosting India's top scientists working on secret projects.
"It's a serious security breach that as Manager of the guest house Mahendra Prasad was privy to information via letters and emails informing him about the guests who would be visiting Chandan with their names, ranks and in some cases personal details like mobile numbers," a top source told NDTV.
The accused had information about scientists and defence personnel staying at the guest house.
Sources say Mahendra Prasad passed on this information, in some cases entire emails, to his Pakistani handlers via social media channels and WhatsApp.
His handler in Pakistan was a "colonel" with whom he communicated via WhatsApp, say sources.
Chandan and Pokhran are two sites in the Thar desert where significant and crucial testing of new weapons and missile systems is held.
Mahendra Prasad had access to emails about scientists or defence personnel staying in the guest house, what are their ranks and posts and the duration of their stay.
He also knew if a group of scientists were visiting who would be the leader and who would be the subordinates in the team, information that could compromise national security especially since, say sources.
Sources added that the may have given the enemy country a fair idea of the trials for defence systems going on in Chandan and Pokhran.
The Pinaka Rocket system was one of the projects IB sources believe Mahendra Prasad could have leaked information on. The Pinaka rocket system was tested in Pokhran in April 2022 and again in August 2022.
Two phones have been recovered from the accused, who is a native of Uttarakhand.
A forensic analysis of his phone has revealed that he was in touch with his Pakistani operatives.
Investigating agencies are yet to trace the money trail. However, they suspect that he could have been paid in cash.
Mahendra Prasad was working at the DRDO guest house during Operation Sindoor, India's counterstrike for the April 22 terror attack in J&K's Pahalgam, as well, making his arrest all the more crucial for intelligence agencies.

New Delhi: India has issued a stern warning to Pakistan following a series of provocative statements by three of its top leaders over the past 48 hours. The comments by Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Ex-Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto have drawn a sharp response from New Delhi, with the Ministry of External Affairs asking Islamabad to exercise restraint. At the weekly press briefing on Thursday, MEA spokesperson Randeep Jaiswal said, 'Pakistani leaders are issuing irresponsible, war-inciting and hate-filled statements against India. These remarks appear to be aimed at covering up domestic failures.' He added, 'They must control their words. Any wrong step from their side will have very serious consequences.' The remarks follow the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India, a decision that has drawn repeated threats from Islamabad in recent days. On August 11, Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir made a provocative statement during a private event at Tampa in Florida. 'We will wait for India to build a dam, and when it does so, phir 10 missile sey faarigh kar dengey,' he declared, implying the use of missile strikes to destroy any future dams constructed by India on the Indus River. Following Munir's remarks, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a strong warning regarding the Indus Waters Treaty. Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, he stated, 'I want to tell the enemy today that if you threaten to hold our water, then keep this in mind that you cannot snatch even one drop from Pakistan.' He emphasised that any attempt to cut off water supplies would result in a 'decisive response' from Pakistan, framing the Indus waters as the 'lifeblood' of the nation. Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto also joined the chorus of threats. He warned that if India continued to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, Pakistan would have 'no choice' but to consider war. His remarks came shortly after Munir's nuclear threat, heightening regional alarm over potential conflict escalation. Addressing claims related to the treaty, Jaiswal dismissed Pakistan's position and questioned the validity of the Court of Arbitration. 'India does not recognise the arbitration court legally or formally. It has no authority to issue such decisions. Its orders fall outside its jurisdiction. They do not affect India's rights over water usage,' he said. He also reaffirmed India's reasoning for suspending the treaty, pointing to rising cross-border terrorism. 'As stated in our press release of June 27, 2025, the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty is a direct response to Pakistan's repeated acts of cross-border terrorism, including the Pahalgam attack. This step is a measure to safeguard India's national security and is fully within our rights,' he said. Jaiswal also addressed broader geopolitical issues during the briefing. On India-US relations, he said, 'The partnership between India and the United States rests on deep strategic cooperation, shared democratic values and strong mutual respect. The relationship has withstood challenges and changes, and we remain confident it will continue to grow on the basis of shared interests.' Regarding upcoming international engagements, he highlighted that External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is expected to travel to Moscow later this month for the 26th India-Russia Inter-Government Session. On the Alaska meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, Jaiswal welcomed the agreement for dialogue. He reiterated Prime Minister Modi's repeated message that 'this is not the age of war'. On trade with China, he confirmed that discussions continue to resume border trade at Lipulekh and Shipki La in Uttarakhand, ensuring safe and regulated commerce. Finally, Jaiswal addressed the United States' Human Rights Report 2025, released on August 12. 'These reports are based on allegations, misrepresentations and one-sided assumptions that fail to capture India's democratic framework accurately. ED to court: Former Vasai-Virar civic chief and his junior used code names and fixed rates in talks with builders
Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has said that former Vasai-Virar municipal commissioner Anil Pawar and his junior, deputy director of town planning Y S Reddy, operated under the code names 'C' and 'D', respectively, during discussions with builders regarding bribe amounts. An architect of a builder said in his statement that when he informed Reddy about the total area of one of his projects, Reddy fixed the bribe amount at Rs 50 lakh for clearing the file and also determined the amount for 'C'. The ED reported that a relative of Pawar collected Rs 3.4 crore in cash at his Dadar office, believed to have been delivered by an angadia. The ED said Pawar bought expensive sarees, pearls and gold and diamond jewellery through Reddy and the settlement happened in cash. Special judge R B Rote remanded the four accused in ED custody till Aug 20. In the remand application, calling the scam "colossal", the ED stated that Reddy used an intricate codeword system for the collection of commissions and bribes from builders, architects and local liaisoners. An in-depth analysis of WhatsApp chats of Reddy with the commissioner, liaisoners, architects, builders and others established who were the persons behind the code names 'C' and 'D', said the ED. The remand application included a portion of a statement from an architect representing a builder that the ED recorded during the case investigation. It stated, "Reddy asked me how much money I had to pay him. I gave him the figure of 1.95 lakh square feet, which was the total area of my last case (project) wherein permission was granted by VVCMC (Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation). So the total amount was Rs 48.75 lakh at the rate of Rs 25 per square foot, which is rounded off to Rs 50 lakh. This was the amount to be given to Reddy as DDTP. 'D' in the chat meant DDTP. Then I asked how much money was to be given to the commissioner VVCMC. In the chat, 'C' is meant to be the commissioner VVCMC, who was Anil Pawar." The ED said that Pawar charged large commissions and bribes for granting various development permissions required from VVCMC for starting different residential, commercial and other projects. This was fixed at the rate of Rs 20-25 per sq ft of the built area of the project. It could increase to Rs 50 per sq ft depending on the complexity of the project and the wherewithal of the concerned builder. This was revealed based on statements from various builders, architects, VVCMC officers, and liaisoners, the ED informed the court. The ED said that Pawar incorporated various firms to channelise and utilise the proceeds of crime and also to integrate the proceeds of crime into the financial mainstream of the economy. A large amount of cash was suspected to be infused in all the projects, entities, investments by the accused in the multiple entities floated in the name of his wife, daughters and distant relatives. These entities were engaged in the construction of residential projects wherein a large amount of cash was suspected to be infused by the accused. "The cash so collected by distant relatives was invested in properties situated at various locations in Maharashtra," the plea said. Seeking Pawar's custody, the ED's remand plea said that it was necessary to prevent him from tampering with evidence. The plea said that during a search operation at his home on July 29, Pawar initially refused to open the door for over two hours. During this time, he deleted call logs and WhatsApp data from his mobile phone, a clear attempt to destroy crucial evidence, the ED submitted. Referring to Pawar and Reddy, the plea said, "Owing to the power and influence associated with such a position, there exists a grave and reasonable apprehension that accused…may exert undue influence, inducement, threat, or coercion upon builders, architects, liaisoners, and officials of VVCMC," the remand plea said. The money laundering case pertains to the unauthorised construction of 41 residential and commercial buildings on govt and private land under the jurisdiction of the VVMC, which included land spanning 30 acres designated for sewage treatment and dumping facilities. The 41 buildings were demolished only after a recent court order, resulting in financial and housing losses for those who purchased flats in the structures. Op Sindoor a sign India no longer bound by traditional borders: Rajnath
Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said Operation Sindoor was a balanced military response that signalled India is no longer bound by traditional boundaries, but is using modern technology, accurate intelligence and smart military strategies to target terrorism. The success of Operation Sindoor will be celebrated at the Independence Day function at Red Fort on Friday. (PTI) 'It was a clear message from India that we are tolerant, but when it comes to the safety of our people and the dignity of our country, we unite and face every challenge boldly. Operation Sindoor is a part of India's new policy, a clear message that no matter how deep the roots of terrorism are, its complete destruction will be ensured,' Singh said in a message to soldiers on the eve of the country's 79th Independence Day. The success of Operation Sindoor will be celebrated at the Independence Day function at Red Fort on Friday, three months after Indian forces hit terror and military targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. A Mi-17 helicopter will fly a flag depicting Operation Sindoor, the invitation cards carry the operation's distinct logo, the view cutter at Gyanpath will also showcase the logo, and the floral decoration will be based on the operation. Operation Sindoor will continue until the goal of complete destruction of terrorism is achieved, Singh said, on a day the government announced gallantry awards for soldiers who took part in the operation. Singh described India's actions during the operation as 'a shining example of a precise and successful military strategy, and a glimpse of a new vision, technological advancements and self-reliance.' India launched the operation in the early hours of May 7 and struck terror and military installations in Pakistan and PoK following the Pahalgam terror strike. Between the launch of the operation in the early hours of May 7 and the ceasefire on May 10 evening, Indian forces bombed nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK, killing at least 100 terrorists, and the Indian Air Force struck targets at 13 Pakistani airbases and military installations. India, Singh said, successfully utilised cutting-edge apparatus such as drones, layered air defence, electronic warfare and network-centric operations, and proved that it is no longer dependent on foreign technology. The operation has taken India's military self-reliance to a greater height, he said. Talking about the balanced strategy of Operation Sindoor, Singh said within a few minutes (on May 7), nine terror training camps, including the headquarters of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, were destroyed by precise missile attacks, and no civilian areas and Pakistani military establishments were targeted. The Indian armed forces, he said, neither crossed the Line of Control nor violated the international border, yet managed to deliver a crushing blow to the terror infrastructure hidden inside the enemy's territory. Singh added that with Operation Sindoor, the armed forces not only avenged the barbaric terror attack in Pahalgam, but also the strikes on Parliament House, in Mumbai and on Amarnath pilgrims in the past.
