It's bank holiday weekend! Get ready for 'extremely busy' roads and EV chargers
A report by the RAC and transportation analytics firm, INRIX, suggests as many as three million journeys are expected to take place on Friday alone, rising to 3.4 million on Saturday – potentially making it the busiest travel day across the long weekend.
If you're planning on avoiding the worst of the traffic, the RAC says it's best to remain off the roads between 10am and 7pm on Friday, 9am and 5pm on Saturday and 11am and 6pm on Monday. Advertisement - Article continues below
The best time to travel, according to the RAC, is in the evening past 7pm on Friday, or in the morning before 9am and 11am on Saturday and Monday respectively. Being bang in the middle of the weekend, Sunday's traffic is supposed to remain average.
As is probably expected, the RAC anticipates the M5 heading southbound between Bristol and Devon to take the biggest brunt of the traffic as holidaymakers flood to the coast to soak up the last rays of summer sun. Delays of over 40 minutes are expected in the 50-mile stretch between junction 15 near Bristol and junction 23 for Bridgwater on Friday and Saturday, while the M20 in Kent also has the potential for queues surpassing half-an-hour. Team leader for mobile servicing and repairs at the RAC, Nick Mullender, said the organisation is 'expecting major roads to airports and coastal destinations to be extremely busy, especially the South East and South West regions which could end up bearing the brunt of most holiday hold-ups.'
Mullender then advised 'Anyone planning routes through these areas [to] set off as early as possible or be prepared to spend longer in traffic.'
As more people take to the roads over the weekend, this will ultimately result in a greater strain on the UK's public EV charging network. Chargepoint operator, BP pulse, estimates that demand could rise by more than five per cent and has thus advised drivers to try and plug-in during quieter times – typically in the early morning and late evening – in order to avoid queues.
'The August bank holiday is always a busy time on the roads, and with EVs increasingly popular, we're expecting to see higher demand for EV charging than ever before,' said bp pulse's UK general manager, Valerio Ferro.
'However, the good news is that fast charging infrastructure has continued to grow significantly over the past 12 months, and bp pulse's network is available across the UK for EV drivers to stop off and top up their battery when they need it.'
As of July 2025, the number of public chargepoints across the UK grew by 27 per cent year-on-year to over 82,000 units. While it's worth pointing out that not all of these are operational at all times, operators are as of late 2023 expected by law to display at least 99 per cent reliability across their network, making it less stressful for those needing to charge up.

VAUXHALL has created this wild 199mph racer with s-t-r-e-t-c-h-y aero for Gran Turismo 7. But if you squint a little – and then again, a little bit harder – you're also looking at the next Corsa supermini. 6 We're talking about the white bits, minus the cereal box wheel arches, and the slim visor-like light signature at the front. You'll back off before the car does. All the data you need is projected on to the windscreen in front of you. The dash and door panels light up to warn of another racer in your blindspot – or flash up a pit crew message like 'BOX, BOX'. Lots of triangle elements inside and outside of the car are a nod to Manta rally cars of old. Nice touch. Design chief Mark Adams told me: 'We did a lot of research and the biggest gamers in Europe are UK and Germany, which is perfect for Vauxhall and Opel. 'So this Vision Gran Turismo car is a way of connecting to a younger audience and bringing them into the brand. 'Corsa is our best-selling car by a long way, so making something fit around the character of Corsa was key. 'You can see the bits that are more design language and then the super hi-tech racing parts. HARD-EDGE PERFORMANCE "But we've kept it to a Corsa footprint.' Vauxhall has already previewed Mokka GSE packing a 280hp e-motor and a limited-slip differential. That's almost double the power of a regular Mokka Electric. Adams said: 'We are well positioned with our core models and now we are adding the spice and emotion with GSE. 'Our current GSE cars are nice but they are not hard-edge performance. We want to switch that.' Here's an idea. How about putting two e-motors in the Gran Turismo Corsa and let us take it to a real racetrack. Fury as train fares could soar by inflation-busting 5.8% next year despite services getting WORSE
TRAIN passengers could face a 5.8 per cent fares rise next year, even though punctuality is the worst since 2020. It would see the price of a Liverpool-to-Manchester annual flexi ticket jump by £120.30 to £2,195.10. 2 Increases are usually calculated by adding one percentage point to the Retail Price Index figure for inflation — which yesterday hit 4.8 per cent for July. The RPI is calculated by looking at the prices of 700 products and services but also includes mortgage interest payments and council tax. Fare rises could see a Woking-to-London season ticket soar by £247 to £4,507. Meanwhile, punctuality is at its lowest in more than five years. The Office of Rail and Road found trains reached 66.7 per cent of station stops on time in the year to July 19 — the worst since the year to May 2020. Labour is nationalising operators as contracts expire, with South Western Railway and c2c now under public ownership. Ben Plowden of Campaign for Better Transport said: 'The fundamental question for the Government is how to use its role in setting fares policy to deliver a more affordable network and encourage customers.'
