Roger Norrington, Iconoclastic British Conductor, Dies at 91
His death was confirmed by his friend and musical colleague Evans Mirageas, who is the artistic director of the Cincinnati Opera.
Mr. Norrington was known for his brisk, lively and often audacious performances of Handel, Mozart and Haydn before he turned his attention to Beethoven and Berlioz; after that, he forged deeper into the 19th and early 20th centuries. He led both period-instrument and modern orchestras, using the same interpretive principles, and though some of his performances drew criticism for their brash iconoclasm, many listeners regarded them as insightful and refreshingly original.
Lanky, bespectacled, bearded and balding, Mr. Norrington projected both affability and authority, and he loved making the case for his ideas — not only in interviews but also in seemingly off-the-cuff comments at his concerts. He often cited centuries-old treatises as well as his delight in the 'pure' sound, as he put it, of strings playing without vibrato. He once famously referred to vibrato as 'a modern drug.'
Toward the end of his career, he preferred to conduct while seated, usually on a high swivel chair that allowed him to turn to the audience to smile conspiratorially at a light moment within the music, and even to encourage applause. He was known to tell audiences that they could applaud between the movements of a symphony or a concerto, a common practice in the 18th and 19th centuries that is frowned on today.
He reveled in being provocative. In a 2021 interview with The Telegraph, he referred to his 2007 recording of Mahler's Second Symphony as his 'last hand grenade.'

What to expect on Netflix thanks to Harry and Meghan's new deal
The Sussexes have secured a new deal with Netflix to produce films, television shows and documentaries. Harry and Meghan have given the streaming giant first options on their output from Archewell Productions. Here is what to expect from the couple on Netflix in the coming months: – With Love, Meghan – Season 2 The second instalment of Meghan's lifestyle show will debut later in August. Netflix said: 'Meghan returns with a fun and heartwarming new season, welcoming celebrity chefs, talented artists, and beloved friends for hands-on adventures filled with laughter and discovery.' It promises 'playful cooking challenges' and 'DIY projects', adding: 'Meghan and her guests explore bold flavours, experiment with new techniques, and discover simple ways to add beauty to everyday life.' The show, Netflix says, is 'all about embracing playfulness over perfection and finding joy in creating together'. Season one was not, however, well received by critics and the show has a 3.2 rating out of 10 on – With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration The special holiday episode of With Love, Meghan will air in December. Netflix invites viewers to 'join Meghan in Montecito for a magical holiday celebration'. It adds: 'Together, friends and family deck the halls, create holiday feasts, craft heartfelt gifts, and share lots of laughs – with simple how-tos to follow at home. 'It's a holiday wonder with warmth, tradition, and a generous dose of joy.' The Sussexes used to spend Christmas with the royal family at Sandringham but Harry and Meghan, who moved to the US five years ago, last did so in 2018. Harry is estranged from his brother the Prince of Wales after a bitter fallout and has a troubled relationship with his father the King. – Meet Me At The Lake The 'romance feature' is an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Carley Fortune. 'This romantic drama follows a decade-spanning love story that begins with a chance encounter and a broken promise,' Netflix says. No date has been announced for the project – news of which first emerged two years ago. The story deals with mental health, postnatal depression and childhood trauma over losing a parent in a car crash, with some of the themes said to have similarities with Harry and Meghan's own experience. – Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within The new documentary short, by Campfire Studios in Association with Wontanara Productions and Archewell Productions, will focus on a tiny orphanage in Uganda which was borne out of the HIV/Aids crisis. Harry and Meghan are listed among the producers and the documentary will be released later this year. The duke only recently stepped down from Sentebale, the charity he founded nearly 20 years ago to help children orphaned by Aids in Lesotho, following a boardroom battle with its chairwoman. Harry, who was left devastated by the development and who is considering starting a new humanitarian charity, vowed to continue his commitment to supporting youngsters in the region. Netflix says: 'In the heart of Uganda's Masaka region, where the shadows of the HIV/Aids crisis linger, a small orphanage becomes a beacon of hope. 'Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within goes beyond the viral videos to reveal a vibrant, one-of-a-kind community where orphaned children transform hardship into joy, dancing their way toward healing, belonging, and the promise of a brighter future.' It is not known whether Harry and Meghan will feature in the documentary. – Future projects Archewell Productions says it is 'in active development on additional projects with Netflix that span a variety of content genres'. The Sussexes' contract has been described as a 'multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects'.

Prince Andrew Spotted on Rare Outing as Bombshell Book Author Reveals What 'Annoys' the Duke About Losing Royal Status
The Duke of York was spotted visiting Windsor Castle on Sunday after spending a week avoiding the spotlight at the Royal LodgeNEED TO KNOW Prince Andrew was spotted on a rare outing over the weekend The Duke of York has been lying low after excerpts from a bombshell new biography about him and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, were released The book includes details about a violent encounter that Andrew allegedly had with Prince Harry, as well as alleged details about his exploits with Jeffrey EpsteinPrince Andrew was spotted making a visit to Windsor Castle over the weekend amid controversy over a new bombshell biography about him and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson. The Duke of York, 65, stepped out on Sunday, Aug. 10, after lying low at his home, the Royal Lodge, over the last week. Photos showed him behind the steering wheel of a car, reportedly driving to Windsor Castle. On Aug. 1, the Daily Mail published excerpts from the new book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York by author Andrew Lownie. A summary on the Harper Collins website says it tells the story of "a spoilt prince unable to connect and a duchess pushed by her insecurities into a desperate need to maintain the attention her 'royal' status brought." The Daily Mail's previews included unflattering details about Prince Andrew's portrayal in the book, detailing allegations about a violent altercation he had with Prince Harry — purportedly over comments made about his wife, Meghan Markle — as well as claims about the disgraced royal's lurid behavior with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. King Charles' younger brother took a major step back from his duties as a working royal in November 2019, following a scrutinized interview with BBC's Newsnight about his alleged ties to Epstein. Then, in January 2022, Queen Elizabeth stripped her son of his military titles and patronages after he attempted to have Virginia Giuffre's sexual assault lawsuit against him dismissed. The Duke of York has denied any wrongdoing and in February 2022, settled with Giuffre out of court for an undisclosed sum. Since then, he has lived a quiet life, kept out of the spotlight against his wishes, Lownie claimed in a new interview with Sky News. "I don't think he has any public future. I would say his private future is pretty limited, too," the author noted. "I mean, he lives in Royal Lodge [on the Windsor Estate], he plays golf, watches TV and presumably sees his grandchildren... He's living the life of a retired man." Lownie continued, "What most annoys him is his lack of a royal status. That's what really sort of gave him his whole sense of identity. And that's, you know, it's not being able to put on his uniforms and strut around and being self-important." Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more! Buckingham Palace has made no comment on Lownie's allegations or his forthcoming book. However, a spokesperson for Prince Harry denied the allegations made in the book excerpts. "Prince Harry and Prince Andrew have never had a physical fight, nor did Prince Andrew ever make those comments about the Duchess of Sussex to Prince Harry," the spokesperson told PEOPLE last week. Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York will be published on Aug. 14 and purports to "expose the secrets and scandals behind [Andrew and Fergie's] extravagant lives and troubled marriage." Despite the fact that they officially divorced in May 1996, the Duke and Duchess of York, both 65, have continued to maintain a home together at the Royal Lodge since 2004, and Sarah has stood by her ex's side throughout his fall from grace. She even defended him in a March 2023 interview on Good Morning America, expressing how it was "really difficult" to see him struggle with the loss of his royal identity. "We've been there for each other — you know, when I've gone through really bad times in the past, Andrew's always been there," she said. "He is exceptionally kind, and he is a very, seriously good grandfather. He's very steadfast for the girls," Sarah continued, referencing their daughters Princess Beatrice, 37, and Princess Eugenie, 35. "We are women that also have had to see the demise of a very strong man, and that has been really difficult to see." Read the original article on People
